Want to create a thread dedicated to Hockey Precious Metal Gems. Partially to feed my obsession with these specific cards, but also to:

Show off PMG’s, discuss prices, trends, predictions and be an archive for these cards.


To start off let me show a recent pick up I have posted on IG and Reddit.

2015-16 Fleer Showcase Eichel PMG Purple 5/5. Will be grading it with Beckett or PSA in the future.

They are very cool cards, but to me, the lack of there being an actual Precious Metal Gems issued in the mid-90's that would've included Gretzky, Lemieux, Jagr, Roy, Brodeur, etc. hinders the demand for these cards in the modern-era.

For example, the 2012-13 PMG's of Crosby, Malkin & Lemieux are relatively easily obtained and at reasonable prices. I think had there been an original release in the mid-90's - like the Metal Universe in basketball - these would be more desirable.

In my opinion, the 1996-97 Metal Ice Carvings Super Power cards are the hockey equivalent of what the PMG's are to basketball. Although not #'d /10, they were inserted at a ratio of 1:240 I believe.

I am curious if you can see the modern PMG's having the same trend as the 90's. From what I've discussed and seen, the 90's PMG's took a decade + to really garner the interest and bulk value that they currently hold. Could you see the PMG's (especially the original designs to Hockey, 15-16 & 16-17) garnering that trend 10+ years from now, once the people who collected/opened Fleer hockey as a kid or young adult have proper disposable income? Obviously not on the scale of other sports but in relative terms.

Also, do not have a Super Powers and need one badly!

I agree modern hockey PMGs do not have the same allure as they have no follow up given no 90s hockey PMGs

With that being said the 96 Metal Super Power inserts are aesthetically as close as you can get card design wise to a 90s Hockey PMG

While not serial numbered or nearly as rare they are just beautiful cards if you are looking for that type of 90s PMGesque card design in 90s hockey

Ive alluded to this in my prior posts

I own Super Power versions of all the 96 Metal inserts and they are just stellar cards in hand

Especially the Ice Carvings Super Power versions though there is no Gretzky in the set

Imo they as well as the 98-99 Bowmans Best Atomics are probably the sweetest looking 90s inserts / parallels ever made imo

As rare....no

But those things just glow like a PMG

Alot of the greatest 97-98 basketball designs were used a year earlier in many 96-97 hockey sets

Another example being the 96-97 Game Jerseys which did not hit basketball until the following year in 97-98

The Lemieux and Fedorov SP Ice Carvings above are great cards and are still very affordable

Thought I'd update this thread and provide some transparency on a sale I made involving my raw 2016-17 Auston Matthews Rookie PMG Purple /5. This can give you an insight into how the PMG market is trending for hockey.

I sold it for $1750 CDN about a week ago. That comes to about $1250 USD at the time.

Not a sale I wanted to make but I got asking price and it funded a card I have been looking at for over a year. I also know where 3 of 5 of the Matthews copies are located, so I could possibly grab one again before I really regret selling.

I have no idea when it comes to hockey wax. 19-20 stuff didn't seem to blast off north of original price, so I don't necessarily see a rush, but I also wouldn't expect it to get cheaper - I think there's going to be demand for this release. If you want to crack some, I doubt you'll get your ass kicked buying in now.

It’s much more than the pmg’s, I don’t think the pmg’s will be too expensive (aside from /10 or /1). It’s the 90s nostalgia in general, the base is metal universe and the inserts are platinum portraits (very popular) and ex Jambalaya (maybe the most iconic 90s insert set). The whole package is very appealing especially to basketball collectors.

I do use filters for them but they are very brightly colored regardless. I use the filters mainly to increase the sharpness to show off the lenticular patterns. If you would like to see them without filters just shoot me a dm on insta and ill send you some pics.


Haven't they had Jambalayas, PMGs and other retro inserts in hockey before? It doesn't seem like they took off before. Do you think the current climate plus Laffy is going to be what is different this time or what?

To me, the Jambalayas and PMG's have taken off. A Gretzky Jambalaya recently sold for 1000CAD+ while there were also several other Crosby and Gretzky sales that went between 400-800 USD each. A couple weeks ago I paid around $160 for an 09-10 Messier.

The PMG's have taken off as well when you consider a couple 12-13 Gretzky Reds sold for 800+ while McDavid Red rookies are selling around 1k. The lower end players aren't selling for much but that is to be expected.

To me, Laffy is irrelevant. He has no more potential coming in the league than when Taylor Hall, RNH, or Stamkos were drafted. Laffy is a great prospect but I think you got upper deck marketing him as a Crosby or McDavid level where he is more of a Taylor Hall level (coming out of the draft).

Not as of yet, I am waiting for my 500 cards out at PSA to come back before I send in anymore or any snap-outs.

The majority of my PMG Green / Purple PMGs are in those 500 cards though, will be an exciting return.

Yes, there are differences in the print runs, but I am not convinced they warrant the premiums some are commanding.

Looking "way better" is a personal opinion. I see the 2012-13 cards going for a huge premiums compared to the others. To me, they are not the best looking PMGs.

I tend to think the price variances are due to a market that hasn't been established, but would appreciate any other insight.

2012-13 was the first year Hockey had PMG’s and were a throwback to the originals from Basketball. That is why those command a premium.

PMG's are the parallels for the metal universe base insert set. Dependent on the year there are 3-4 colours, Red, Blue, Green and Purple.

Red is the least scarce, numbered anywhere between 65 copies - 150 dependent on year.

Blue is anywhere between 25-50 copies varying per year

Green is always 10 copies

Purple is only in 15-16 and 16-17 and have 5 copies

My suggestion is buying one to see how they pop in hand, much better than most pack pulled modern cards out there.

With the new Metal set coming out, maybe they figured there'd be a ton more interest in the older PMG's so this might be a good time to grab that Green before even more collector's wise up to the fact that hockey had PMG's?

Seems like people are wising up to the factors that surround the two cards that put them close to equal footing. Yes the FWA may be a mid-high end auto rookie, but the eye appeal is nowhere near the PMG, nor is the scarcity or legacy.

Started this thread because I truly believed in these cards in the long run through extensive research and half a decade watching and looking back on the market across all sports.

Had a few responses up at the start of the thread with doubt but the sales on PWCC is solidifying PMG’s position. I still think these have a bright future going forward and those sales are just the beginning.

Seems like people are wising up to the factors that surround the two cards that put them close to equal footing. Yes the FWA may be a mid-high end auto rookie, but the eye appeal is nowhere near the PMG, nor is the scarcity or legacy.

Started this thread because I truly believed in these cards in the long run through extensive research and half a decade watching and looking back on the market across all sports.

Had a few responses up at the start of the thread with doubt but the sales on PWCC is solidifying PMG’s position. I still think these have a bright future going forward and those sales are just the beginning.

I own a lot of these for complete transparency too; Put my money where my mouth is.

The last three BGS 9.5/PSA 10 Crosby FWAs sold for $14,000 USD, $9,600 CAD, and $13,600 on eBay, so not quite as high as the total for the PMG one.

And then a couple hours later, on Clubhouse, the winner of the auction identified himself as the winner. He was hoping to win it for $12-$13k. His high bid was over $20k and he is very glad he won the card.

Nice to see these cards get respect but still a fraction of the price of the Basketball counterparts with Jordan's Green doing $900K+ and Tim Duncan doing $224K.

This card sure jumped up quick into prominence. It has all the same attributes of the 1997 counterparts but basketball is so crazy especially comparing it to hockey I feel like gauging it with the Jordan and Duncan RC doesn't seem apropos. And will always be a fraction compared to those behemoths. Although who knows with the ways things are jumping on rare cards of prominence of coveted players but just my thoughts.

I own one too so I do hope I'm wrong though. Either way I think this card has easily jumped into Sid's top 10 cards.

Comparing basketball and hockey is pointless and pwcc auction to be taken with a grain of salt.

Those PMG's are from the 90's not some retro re-dos.

Winner already paid. Underbidder and bidder don't know each other. I know both.

Design is similar. Insert name is same. Colors are similar. I have a 1997 Basketball PMG and can see for myself they are similar. They do look like the 1997's, not exact, but 1997 are what the 2012 hockey are based on. Anyway, no point in going back and forth anymore.

Ahh. Gotcha. Yeah for sure, I agree with that. Brand recognition across the entire hobby is huge and doesn't get much bigger than the greens #'d/10 in any sport that has them.

With the sale of this one its already put this card/set on the map for hockey.

I'm curious to see how much of an affect this sale will have for this set/card going forward.

And I love that this set has the chipping issues. Its a nice homage to the 97's

I was attempting to put together all years PMG Green and Purple /5 sets. Although I missed my opportunity on a couple Gretzky Greens and McDavid Green RC so it is out of the question now.

Believe I have over 200 Green & Purples if I am not mistaken.

I have mixed feeling on this personally. The beauty of the 90s PMGs is that there are limited amounts due to only a 3 year span of production. So with more and more coming out it essentially waters down the over all demand for one specific year and give more options to collectors. Good to own one, bad for pricing on any year.

On the contrary as seen with other sets historically, it does drive the majority of dollars and interests to the inaugural set (Seen with Prizm, Exquisite, Cup, Topps Chrome, etc…).

So I am hesitant to say any certain out come moving forward regarding prices; But I will say the new Skybox has garnered a LOT of interest into Hockey PMGs.


Also appreciate the compliment. Was a lot of research before I started buying. Lots of comments in person, FB etc telling me I was dumb and should buy YGs and FWAs… lol. Too boring for me.

A Jordan PMG/10 sold for over 900K. Personally I think it is cool hockey cards are catching up to the other sports. Adds more interest plus the excitement of pulling a card that you could pay your mortgage off with.

I totally agree. Hockey has lagged behind other major sports, but with the new ESPN contract and younger flashy players, more people are tuning in.

Most of my collection is organized in boxes by sport and player. I routinely look through the boxes to look at the cards and see if I have any "hidden gems" that I may have previously overlooked. Plus, I usually label the back of the holder with an estimated price in case anything ever happens to me and my wife wants to sell my collection.

I was looking through my Alex Ovechkin box this weekend and came across these two cards. I had not priced them in over two years, so they were labeled with $10 and $12. :doh:

They dont seem to promote hockey as much as other sports, think ive gotten 5-6 emails with Luka, Messi and Lebron and not one with Kirill. But the Mcdavids are relatively low as well maybe pick up steam this week..and the BGS 7.5 should be same as PSA 8 (Crosby)

My biggest question for these high dollar gold PMG sales are how will their prices hold up when these players get another gold PMG next year, and another the year after that, etc? Seems like metal universe is here to stay, so gold PMGs will be an annual occurrence

I am pretty new to hockey so I also started collecting Opcp seismic gold because they seem like the closest thing to my favorite baseball insert, Topps chrome gold refractors . Traded for a McDavid last week, now probably my favorite card in my epack account

I would feel safer investing in Crosby and his 3 Cups, gold medals etc than what McDavid might do, at least for a huge card like that.

A couple of these cards are duplicated across these photos (I don’t have more than one copy of any of the greens), but it’s been a blast working on some of the rarer PMG stuff from the 2020 set, especially while it was plentiful on epack - some really great deals found there and fun times making trades (sometimes making multiple trades to acquire stuff someone wanted in exchange for what I needed) to acquire things. Have a bunch of plates I’m still working on as well, but only the two sets I have completed are shown.

Yes I still have the whole set of 6 and yes it's technically less rare being #'d out of 250 but a lot of employees seem to hold onto their cards and the fact that the only way to get one is from an employee I think adds to the value

More people are collecting the retro insert set compared to base, so prices for the retros are higher.

According to the 21-22 Metal set info (https://www.cardboardconnection.com/2021-22-skybox-metal-universe-hockey-cards), they're bringing back 97-98 retros for another year. Same design, same rarity, probably most of the same players. i.e., there's gonna be very little to separate a Connor McDavid 2020-21 Retro PMG vs. a 2021-22 Retro PMG.

If they keep reusing the 97-98 design for the retros year over year, is there a scenario where the retros fall of favor due to overuse/boredom and the base PMGs get closer to them in value? There are other retro PMG years they could use designs for, but it seems like they just wanna keep doing 97-98.

97/98 is iconic but I think continued printing and production of it with the same players only serves to dilute the values of existing cards. I doubt that's too unpopular of an opinion? I think 12/13 and 20/21 will hold the best value over time though.

I think if the price gaps close between the 97/98 retros vs the base PMGs, it'll be more due to the decline in prices of the 97/98s than an increase in the base PMGs.

I believe yearly 97-98 Retros will have the opposite effect. They'll be chase cards every year, resulting in more brand recognition/desirability and greater value. The "first" retro for any player will be the most sought after, akin to Kabooms, Galactics, Gold Prizms, Downtowns etc.

If it were a one and done set, or a set done once every 10 years - it would lose its lustre.

Although, from what i've heard 2022 retros will be rookies

Both the Base and the Retro only have 299 serial numbered copies each, which isn't terrible when you consider the massive rainbow some other products have. 199 Purple (technically not PMGs) + 90 Red + 10 Green.

But since a lot of OPC Platinum has jumped in price, I'm becoming interesting in PMGs again. For example, the Kaprizov OPC Arctic Freeze /99 is a $500 card now apparently - for that price I'd rather pay $400 for the PMG which comes from a much smaller rainbow.

There are some good deals on the unsung veteran HOF bound players too. I got a Josi Red a while back for like $6

I won't disagree, but it's hard to compare the two. I collect Kaprizov and I'm looking forward to his prices coming down as much as anyone. But Kaprizov is the face of his franchise's entire 20 year existence, while Makar is just another piece on a team with 3 other players scoring at or near 100 point rates, not to mention the guys like Landeskog or Byram who draw moderate hobby interest. Plus, the Avalanche have already won Cups/have HOFers that people wanna collect, the Wild have nobody of that type. Every single Wild collector collects Kaprizov, not every Avs collector collects Makar.

It looks like someone consigned a massive Fleer Retro insert collection with pc_sportscards on eBay back in May and had everything graded prior to the auction.

Based on the cards I was following I think they must've set a minimum grade of BGS 8, and everything under that was slabbed with Authentic.


I think if colour were added it would result in an "ALTERED" slab? (no idea since I never actually grade things myself)

Not sure what this means, it was auctioned on eBay. There is no guarantee on how much a card ends for - it's determined by market forces. It ended for an appropriate price in relative to the last comp of a graded BGS 9
