View Full Version : How do I make a partial refund on paypal

I am trying to refund a partial amount of the payment to the ebay buyer from the paypal transaction. I see there is a "Refund this payment" button to push but I don't want to click it and it refunds the entire amount immediately. How do I send a partial refund for a specified amount from paypal back to the buyer's paypal account?

Tracking this one as sometimes I've given partial refunds for overpayment of shipping and wondered if I'm setting myself up for something.

A very small scratch on the BGS case (I got it graded recently), visible in my scan and the seller admits they saw it but when they saw it in person it was worse than the scan showed and they were unhappy, I offered the refund to avoid a very huge $$$$$$ return which they still tried to do but I simply said it was shown in the photo and the listing clearly states I do not offer returns.

No such thing as no reurns on Ebay. YOu possibly got set up for a partial refund scam and walked right into it. They lied when they told you they could not open the claim because you don't accept returns. There is no such thing on Ebay, its against Ebay rules for a buyer to ask for a partial refund. ALWAYS return for refund and repeat that over and over. That helps you get negs removed or possibly win the case

They didn't tell me they couldn't open the claim. The buyer knew he could but chose not to.
I was contacted about the scratch and asked if it could be returned. I explained the Beckett cost to reslab it and the cost of shipping and insurance both ways would be $120 and would a partial refund of $120 work. Buyer said no I'm not liking how it looks with this scratch and don't send cards to be graded and don't want to deal with the hassel so will return it for a refund. I said I don't offer refunds and already paid bills with the money and it would be a financial crises for me if you try to force a refund, and I'm just a collector buying a bit and selling a bit on ebay to collect cards. Then they said that's why I contacted you first to ask, $120 refund will be fine.
I did NOT want to have it returned. It was a sale between $2500 and $3000. They didn't ask for a partial refund, I offered it so they could get the case replaced to resolve the scratch problem.

You got scammed out of the partial. Many times you tell them to return in these cases they go away. If they ask for a partial and you refuse Ebay will remove any neg they leave.

But if that's true I got scammed for a partial, why when I offered the $120 partial refund, they refused and wanted a return for full refund?

Your story has changed a few times here.
Its not the buyers problem that you don't want to take the return. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS NO RETURNS ON EBAY. If they file the claim Ebay will 99% of the time require the full refund upon return.
Even if he accepted the 120.00 he could come back and decide he still wants the refund.

I don’t get it. If they refused the partial why did you open a thread asking how to do a partial?

That is where I am confused as well. I think they offered it then the buyer at first refused and after the OP complained about not being able to afford the refund the buyer accepted it. He got lucky most buyers would not have done that he could still change his mind.

I also included in my response to them when they said they still wanted to return for a refund that if they did that I would post their ebay user account on a basketball message board. In addition to saying I spent the money to pay bills and can't afford to refund the item.
They then asked why I was threatening them.
I said I'm not threatening anything, the scratch on the case does not affect the card and the grade and protection of the case is what gives the card it's higher value. It was a 9.5 with 10 auto.
They then said, let's start over, $120 partial refund will be fine.
I then said, OK but before I do please confirm that a partial refund of $120 will satisfy you and make the sale final.
They said they said they were disatisfied, that will be fine, and that if I ever have any more similar items for sale to let them know, and thanks brother, have a great weekend is what they said to me.

So you did threaten them. That might have been a huge backfire on you. I know I would have sided with the buyet. You sold an item knowing it was scratched when the buyer got it he felt it was worse than you described so when he asked for a refund you threatened to run to blowout. If you threatened me I would have called your bluff and forced the full return.

I forgot about the scratch as soon as I got the cards back from Beckett and looked at them so no I didn't know about the scratch because I had forgotten about it before I listed it on ebay.
Beckett scratched up about half of the new cases on my cards too so i just figured that's the best they can do.

See now you are saying you forgot about the scratch so you did not even mention it in the listing?
Why not pickup the phone and call Beckett as soon as you got them back?

I didn't mention a scratch on the case in my listing.
I just was planning on keeping the cards in my collection and decided to live with it instead of paying shipping and insurance two ways again, it's pricey to insure a card that high in value to there and then back.

I've read many times on here how many buyers decide a player is playing worse or hurt or they just regret how much they paid for a graded card so they say I found a scratch on the case so I want my money back.
I did not and do not assume that is what this buyer did, he could be and probably is just disappointed to see the scratch in the case.
So I told the buyer: I'll be also asking a collector community how to handle this and letting them know what you're trying to do on ebay and your account name.
What's wrong with what I did? Is that a threat? I just wanted to get opinions on here as to if I was being scammed or not or what the right thing to do was.
If I made a mistake, let me know and I'll do better if this ever happens again.

That is not what you said you told him. This is what you said you told him. You said you were going to call him out, not ask how to handle it. It maybe true that he is having remorse but you set yourself up for it. And this is not a case of the buyer inventing the scratch.
I also included in my response to them when they said they still wanted to return for a refund that if they did that I would post their ebay user account on a basketball message board. .
Better would have been accepting the return. You are the one who made the biggest issues main one being not mentioning the scratch in the listing. If you did that it does not matter if the buyer saw it or not the item is not as described and Ebay would have forced the refund.
There are times when a scratch may not look bad or bother you in a photo but photos can be deceptive and its actually worse in hand and the fact you are showing a photo that does nothing to prove how bad it showed to the buyer is hurting your integrity.

OK, so that's why I offered money back so it could be reslabbed. I tried to fix my mistake and did as best I could and the buyer understood.

I'm sorry I described it incorrectly here at first.

I could have just asked about it on here without telling the buyer before I did it. Then he couldn't have told me it was a threat and stopped me from doing so. Even if I simply asked on here for help on how to handle it, there would probably be different answers from different people and about 20 people asking to out the buyer with his username anyway.

So you would not if someone threatened you? Once you make a threat I am going to call you on it and then have the audacity to admit you cannot afford to refund. There is nothing wrong with that, most others here would do the same thing. You did not accurately describe the item and the buyer wanted a refund he had a legitimate complaint. YOur finances are not the buyers problem neither is the fact you think you do not have to take returns.
You got very lucky on this one. Bottom line is if you cannot afford to have to refund the item you should not be selling it online. Paypal can take that money from you for up to 180 days.

That’s a key takeaway. Whether the buyer is honest or a scammer, you can still get hit with a return/chargeback for that long. It sucks, but you can’t spend that money (unless you can cover it again) for that time.
