View Full Version : Panini Select - Will it be as hot at Prizm and Optic?
Panini Select will be available soon. do you guys think it will be as hot at Prizm and Optic? i haven't been able land any prizm or optic and i'm trying to decide if i should try to pre-order select, although perhaps it's too late for that.

Unlikely. I love Select, but it's always second fiddle.

I feel like what drives part of the fervor over Prizm and Select is that they are chrome cards AND can be found in retail formats which makes the pool larger. Also, there is something to be said for simple designs. Select is like taking and LCD trip on some of those designs.

Is Zion in this product???? I think that about sums it up...…….
Will this be retail as well?

Nope. But they’re still beautiful cards. At the end of the day, Prizm and Optic remain king to Select

There is no cheap entry into Select. Boxes are $$$$$$$. Breaks are $$$$$$$. There is no retail version.

Wish they'd release a retail version of this even if it was just concourse and inserts/parallels. I'm sure prices will be sky high at your LCS but since there's no retail, it won't cause much drama in the hobby.

I don’t think it will be yet. Despite being the actual rare chrome set for base and silvers the 3 tier set hurts it.
Select will still be popular but the majority of what’s opened on here is retail so we won’t see more than a few breaks.

It will still probably be hard to get like anything this year. But no it won't be quite as popular as Prizm and Optic. They're nice looking cards though. Select comes in 3rd in my book which isn't too shabby.

Nailed it! You could put a pic of Zion on a dog turd right now, add a serial number and people would be begging you to take their money!

I’m putting it slightly behind Contenders.

I expect Mosaic to do well given the Zion hype, but not expecting anywhere near the craze around Prizm and Optic. I wouldn't be surprised to see a bunch of the retail flippers get stuck with a lot of Mosaic and/or dump it at rates barely over MSRP if they realize they aren't able to flip it at the Prizm/Optic levels.
That being said, I could be wrong and it could end up being the third wave of retail madness. We will find out soon enough.
My LCS just called and said he’s sell me a hobby box for $400 next week if I buy the rest of his optic hobby box he’s packing out at $22 a pack (19 packs) and he’ll split tax. Looking at $835 for both. I would likely flip the select that’s about $450 preorder right now. He also sold me a hobby box of optic for $125 (yes that’s right) the day it released.
Do you see these Select hobby boxes going up from $450?

Which is partly why you saw Select FOTL sell out higher than Prizm and Optic. No cheap entry and more robust FOTL format.

I really hope Mosaic is not as crazy as Prizm/Optic, I can't handle another retail chase this season. It would be nice if I could pick up a few packs/blasters like Hoops and Donruss to try it out, but if it's impossible to find, I can't see myself driving from store to store just trying to score some.

Yes and no... probably. I feel if there is no retail version it cuts out most or at least some of the people hoarding/ flipping boxes. Still going to drive up the product since people will be chasing Zion and Ja.
thanks for all the comments guys. so would you guys put Select as #3 (behind prizm and optic) or Mosaic? and are there both Prizm Mosaic and regular Mosaic? Sorry, but i never really got that. thanks for the 411.

The past couple years they had Prizm Mosaic, where every base card had a thick stock and Silver/Refractor finish on it. This year it's just called Mosaic, so the jury is still out on what the actual cards will look like (stock and finish). Check this thread here:

Remember the day when nobody cared about Optic and said it'd never amount to anything close to Prizm?
I do.
Not saying Select will ever get there, but if enough people *care* it could. I still think it's consistently the best looking release every year...moreso than the Optizm monopoly. Beautiful designs...stellar photography...on-card rookie autos...colors that really pop. Gimme.

thank you. sounds like panini was trying to build mosaic brand equity by attaching the prizm name to it and is now ready to let it go out on its own.

Solid Product, but probably not as popular as the others.

Select, prizm and optic are the “big 3” when it’s comes to base refractor cards.. I think it’s not as popular as others because of having no retail, but out of the “big 3” select is the brand that gives the most high end feel and it’s one of panini “og” brands
It’s very possible in the future select can overtake the top spot regardless of having “3 tiers” the Courtside cards are that great.. I was kind of disappointed how this year Courtside looked, but it were mock up pictures so I’m looking forward to seeing the actual cards in person

I like Select much better than Prizm.
