View Full Version : Who is the worst defensive player in the NBA?

I'm gathering some information for a side project I'm working on and could use some assistance. I just want to know who do you think the worst defensive player in the NBA is and how you came to that conclusion (a certain stat, combination of stats, eye test, etc.). The more answers, the better even if your answer is the same as someone else's.

I will update this when I finish the project so it will make more sense.

Thanks in advance!

Isaiah Thomas perhaps? There's only so much you can do when the next shortest player on most teams has 5 inches on you.

Probably someone like Rudy Gobert, Giannis, Pat Beverly, or Bruce Brown.

Trae.

Based on the limited times ive seen him play.

Trae Young. Worst at his position. Worst period.

I was wondering how many posts in before we see Trae Young. He is terrible. Sell all that you have of him. Now. While he is still in the league. Quick. Run. Hide...…..

lol, worst?

:)

In all seriousness, I would pick Isaiah Thomas for a backcourt worst defender, and Thon Maker for worst front court defender..

Maybe it's my piston bias picking Thon, I have no idea how analytics rate him defensively but I've watched the guy get bullied by 6'2 guards in the paint on several occasions. He might block a shot or two every so often, but other than that.. Yikes!

I think JJ Barea is worse than Trae right now.

Draymond Green. Got the star treatment when he was "playing" alongside Klay, Curry and Durant. But he is a fouling machine.

Agreed 100%.

Without knowing what any of the metrics say that's what my "eye test" tells me also. He's as bad on defense as he is good on offense

there's some truth to that. The Jazz are playing terribly on d and have been for quite some time. Gobert seems like he's not trying as hard as he did the last couple years, letting guards just drive to the basket and around him with ease. Royce O'Neal is supposed to be their defensive specialist and he's been pretty unspectacular. I love the Jazz but they certainly aren't playing like they can win a playoff series right now.

Rondo or Trae Young

Trae yes.....but Rondo?

Not what he used to be but is not in the discussion. Guy was 1st or 2nd team all defense 4 years straight.

It doesn’t really matter which defensive metric you look at Trae is the worst by a considerable margin

Seems Trae Young is the new James Harden.

I'll go with Jabari Parker.

??? He has less fouls per game this year than when they had their championship years

Wiggins has to ve the most disappointing, i know he has it in him. Just so freakin lazy.

Good call. He's such a liability that he has been unplayable down the stretch at times for the Celtics, despite being the clearly better offensive player than some of the other options.

Because now, most of the time he's lost and doesn't even have time to foul.

Jeff Teague or Andrew Wiggins. Don’t care what stats or analytics say after watching them both for the last 3 years, I take my opinion as fact.

Such a douchey, unnecessary post. Someone can be a bad defender without that meaning he's worthless. So... Since the OP asked who was the worst defender, and Trae is arguably the worst, why can't you just leave it?

I don't know how Harden even gets brought up in these discussions.

Metrics have him well above the median in terms of NBA defenders. He's pretty much dead even with Luka. It's just that he sometimes plays matador defense, but when he tries, he's actually fairly good...and he plays passing lanes well.

currently one of the best guards to do it!

It's more of BO's blind hatred of anything Beard. He can do no right.

I understand people not being fond of his offensive style because of the way he draws contact, but saying he's the worst defender in the league says you haven't actually watched his games.

Dame definitely belongs in this discussion.

But I agree with some earlier posters, IT is probably the safest pick in any situation. He's a complete lost cause on that end.

It's probably easier these days to make a list of NBA players that actually play good defense because it has dwindled as the years go by.

It seem like a common criticism of just about every NBA star is that they play terrible defense. Well, it ain't the 90s anymore. Apparenty player defense is lost on most players these days.
