Jordan on fire - any good value picks

Everywhere I look, jordan stuff has exploded over the last couple weeks. What cards is everyone shooting for, and do we see any value out there in an already hot jordan market.

I have found myself picking up some of the psa 10 team sheets cards and panini stickers. What about you?

I picked up the 1996-97 golden touch last week but I wasn’t even thinking of the documentary that is coming out. That seems to be steaming everything up, told at least what I’m hearing.

My recommendation is to scoop up ungraded high end base cards (Finest, Chrome, Bowman’s Best, SPx, Flair, EX-2000/1 featuring him in a Bulls uni and any parallel or low to mid end insert from 95-99. I see that market exploding, since the price points are appealing to collectors on a budget and casual fans alike.

The great thing about 90s MJ is that just about all of the base looks really awesome. Either great design or great photography. Look at Collector's Choice. A set intended for kids, but has better photography than anything Panini has ever put out.

Most of the cards I buy anymore are slabbed, especially non-auto cards, for a couple reasons, primarily because if I am spending good money on something I want it to be top form, and not just something to fill space in an album or long box. Plus, I don’t trust my grading eye on a lot of raw listings I see on eBay.

Doesn’t take away from my desire to collect jordan stuff, or to know what fellow collectors are seeing out there that hasn’t got out of hand yet.

I scooped a PSA 9 for $70 a few weeks ago before he started going up.

I love that set.

I was a kid and was at Books-a-Million one day with my mom and was checking out the cards. They had this weird basketball shape thing with like 100 cards in it and the top card that you could see was Penny Hardaway RC Refractor!! It was $4.99. That card booked for $300 then, when all we had was Beckett. I ran with it to my mom and was like PLEASE PLEASE buy this for me lol. I was 8 years old. Probably the biggest steal I've ever gotten to this day.

I am in 100% agreement with the XRC's having a ton of upside. I believe this card will be "THE" Jordan card to own.

I think any MJ base card that has a 'iconic' parallel are good candidates for huge gains. Showcase has Legacy parallels. Also I think the earlier the better. So '96-97 Showcase over '97-98.

Mine are ungraded since I hate slabbed cards, but looking at them they're in the kind of condition easily selling for 500+ right now, which to me is crazy - they're pieces of cardboard, and there's loads of them out there.

Not to mention the Retro Scoring Kings which I've been after for ages, but they're being listed for well over $1000 USD now. So not for me I don't think :D

A month ago, I would look suspiciously at someone paying $50 for any of these base cards. There are some nice base cards, and in premium condition, I can understand a bit of a higher price, but I have no intention of chasing and Jordan base cards (excluding 87/88, 88/89 fleer), that go above $100 or aren't part of some limited release (e.g., finite, exquisite).

My answer to the original question posed in this thread is that MJ Topps Chrome cards seem under-valued (yes, I own a handful).

With LBJ Prizm and Chrome cards so on-fire, it seems obvious that MJ's Chrome offerings (more scarce than Prizm) will see a natural bump at some point. That point might be...soon?

Needless to say a bad move.

All that said, anyone buying PSA 8 Jordan’s at 5500 are going to get raked over the coals. When I was looking to add a Jordan a few months ago I pondered a PSA 9 Jordan rookie but felt it was still too high. We went through a Jordan rookie pump before, and they came down substantially again (though not to same levels). The card is simply too available and plentiful to sustain 8 prices at that level. Once the doc has come and gone and a new season comes later this fall there will be deflation in the prices. If your in for the flip, now is the time to strike, if your in for the long haul, it doesn’t make sense to buy in this market.

I think 8s will be sub 4K. Back in feb I was pondering a Lebron Chrome refractor and a Jordan 1987 Fleer rookie (which I need to replace some day). I ultimately decided to go with a star 101 8.5 when I pulled the trigger. I felt the price relative to the other two options was better. The grade was closer to “elite” for that card, they are more scarce by comparison, and they did not see the drastic run up to the same level of precipitous rise over a short period as the Fleer and TC refractor did.

When assets move like cryptocurrency, especially cards that are always widely available to acquire, its only natural that they would have similar downside price risk eventually.

Not a big Jordan collector but I would always send in some here and there when I submitted for grading. I kept one of every PSA 10 and would sell the dupes and PSA 9's. So I'm sitting on 22 different PSA 10's base and inserts from 1991 to 1999....nothing super special. 96 SPx RB1, H1 and #8 as well as the 92 McDonald's CH4 and 96 SC Top Crop. Those are probably the best of the lot.
I also put together complete 86 fleer sticker sets in PSA 6, 7, 8(2) and 9. The 9 set is still incomplete as I haven't got the Jabbar yet.
I'm trying to find a good reason NOT to sell these Jordans at the prices they are bringing. I don't see where it's not possible to replace them down the road if I really wanted them back most likely at half of what they are bringing today...or at least 75%.

I was going to create a new thread to get advice on this topic but since it’s in so many threads didn’t want to create yet another one. Im in the process of cleaning up my closet and getting rid of bulk to save space. I pegged all the cards in the link below at no more than $1per and figured I’d discount that further to get rid of quickly as a lot. With an iconic card like Jordan's I don't see anything different happening.

I've picked up a BGS 9 Net Rageous a few days ago, which I'm very happy about, plus I've purchased a very nice lot yesterday from a local guy, and I think it was a steal as well (I've paid $680 for the 5 cards below):

1 x BGS 9.5 N-Tense
1 x BGS 9 N-Tense (True Mint with 9.5 on Centering)
1 x 93-94 Finest base (raw)
1 x 95-96 Beam Team Die Cut (raw)
1 x RockStars non refractor (raw)

All raw cards are in perfect condition, I'll get all 3 graded once PSA/Beckett will open again. He told me, that he is aware of eBay prices, but he just doesn't think that any of these are real, and he thinks that this is the real value of the cards.

I didn't plan to spend more right now, but the same guy who I've bought my Net Rageour from just contacted me and offered a BGS 9.5 97-98 Planet Metal for $1.4K instead of his original $1.5K listing price. It's very tempting seeing the other prices, especially the price of the the Metal Universe base...

Yes the whole asset class is over valued. When the general accepted point of view is that every sale is higher than the last, that cycle will have to break. Should jordAn RC price be up given the spike in Lebron TC? Maybe it’s reasonable to assume so. But there seems to be a cyclical reference here. First Kobe stuff spiked with his death, and people said his stuff was undervalued. Then the argument was Lebron was undervalued relative to Kobe and others and that caused a spike. Now Jordan is undervalued relative to Lebron. I see threads saying - well with Jordan rise in price is Kobe next?

When does that pattern end? I’m not saying prices will crash, I’m not saying money can’t be made or there is no legitimate sales. But, I’d love to know how many legit collectors are buying 2500 metal base cards or 5500 PSA 8s.

With Kobe's demise and all this Prizm/Topps hype I wanted to pick up some Fleer Metal Jordan stuff as they seemed off the radar. Etched cards are my favorites after holograms. Yes the whole asset class is over valued. When the general accepted point of view is that every sale is higher than the last, that cycle will have to break. Should jordAn RC price be up given the spike in Lebron TC? Maybe it’s reasonable to assume so. But there seems to be a cyclical reference here. First Kobe stuff spiked with his death, and people said his stuff was undervalued. Then the argument was Lebron was undervalued relative to Kobe and others and that caused a spike. Now Jordan is undervalued relative to Lebron. I see threads saying - well with Jordan rise in price is Kobe next?

When does that pattern end? I’m not saying prices will crash, I’m not saying money can’t be made or there is no legitimate sales. But, I’d love to know how many legit collectors are buying 2500 metal base cards or 5500 PSA 8s.

Agreed, I don't think we will see prices ever return back to what we knew as "normal". As prices continue to rise, the spike will move into the older 90's and 2000's wax as people try to "hunt" for the Jordan and Kobe inserts. At this point I think hitting any Jordan or Kobe, even base will be considered a "solid hit". I'm already seeing a spike in wax prices. I picked up a box of 1995 Finest Series 2 about 2 months ago and flipped it for 4x the amount I paid not even 2 weeks after my purchase. The entire hobby is going to an insane level, and I do think it's kind of sad that it will get to the point where alot of people won't even be able to stay in the hobby due to the crazy prices.

The real question is how high will the peak be? If somehow 8s hit some number like $7-8k, then worst case they'll settle at $5k+. The Fleer Metal thing is hilarious though.

I think the 97 Fleer Metal is ridiculous at the level it is right now.

But I think it deserves it's place as a card most will want to own. It was $60 and I think raw $100 would be ok. You can decide if you want one or not at that price. But $1k and above is a joke.

So this card is not numbered. I opened quite a few packs of these and let me tell you the silver copies are not hard to pull. I thought they where all silver until One day I pulled a Gold Gary Payton. Then I thought ok there must be a Gold MJ. That would look cool. So I looked on ebay to see one Gold copy of MJ Gold plenty of Silver. This was 3 months ago. $80. No problem.

After that I decided to check Pop reports to get an idea of roughly how scarce these are. I know these cards are very condition sensitive like all die cut cards and also in the 90s grading was not as big and peeps did not look after cards like they do now.

Well turns out these are pretty hard to find.

People are paying over 1k for base cards printed in the thousands if not tens of thousands.

So yeah thought Id share with all. Hope you can find a copy of this card. Its a beauty and currently well undervalued/appreciated.
