Just got into buying basketball and Kobe is my all-time favorite. Seems like besides topps chrome, the rest of his rookie cards are super affordable... And they look good. Am I missing something.

Yes, you're right... but uhhh, after this thread, it may not be that way so... can we just act like you never posted this before Kobe rookies skyrocket out of the blue?

I dont think hes even pumping, it is pretty true.

Back when 90s stuff got really hot 2011 and 2012ish. The formula was always jordan X2 roughly. Which even for how good kobe was seemed reasonable. But then it jumped off to a much higher multiplier, like jordan wasnt twice as good as kobe to begin with. Fwiw i have more jordan than i do Kobe.

I just got back into the card collecting business. I think that Kobe cards are undervalued and he is being disrespected. In a few years you will not be able to touch his cards.

To the moon I tell you. To the moon!!!

Here's another way to look at it, maybe Kobe cards are not undervalued, but other cards overvalued.

This has so much to do with it.

Kobe has thousands and thousands of Rookie cards. If we list the brands there could be a million base Rookies out there. Maybe supply and demand will even out but they are not exactly rare.

Jordan and LeBron stuff currently is so far overvalued compared to their competition.

It's pretty laughable being an ordinary middle class collector with the numbers being thrown around on some of this stuff.

Underrated compared to who or what?

Kobe is a Laker, immensely popular, and an all time great. He gets lots of hobby love and has a legacy. There are just a lot of Kobe rookie year cards out there - check the BGS/PSA population reports. I count 18 mainstream sets in his rookie year plus all the inserts and parallels in those sets. Thousands of them have been graded.

Chrome, Finest, EX-2000, Bowman's Best, Flair, Fleer, Metal, Ultra, Hoops, Skybox, Z-Force, UD SP, SPX, UD, Collector's Choice, Topps, UD3, Stadium Club. Probably even more minor sets not listed.

It's this^^^

Because of this:

Kobe has a lot of rookie cards but some of them have fairly low population reports. Topps, Topps Chrome, Bowman's Best, the Bronze Finest, Upper Deck and SP have thousands graded and plenty of PSA 10s.

Everyone knows E-X2000 is a brutal grade but it's the other brands that have low populations without much fanfare:

All three Flair Showcase rows are under 70

Fleer is 245 out of 1,550

Hoops is 422 out of 2,539

Metal Series One is 114 out of 995

Metal Series Two is 359 out of 1,712

Skybox Series One is 289 out of 1,008

Z-Force is 195 out of 1,309

Stadium Club R1 has 218; R2 has 195

Ultra Series One is 275 out of 3,440; Series Two is 44 out of 385

UD3 Aerial Artists is 96 out of 512

Everything but the Flairs sells for less than a Bronze Finest.

Gary, is that you?

Yes the lower end rookies in graded form are scarce. The cards themselves aren't scarce.

The low end rookie graded cards are only scarce b/c few graded them. There just wasn't much value in grading them until recently.

With the price increases, I'd expect a future large increase in submissions and many more gem mints. Enjoy the Gary effect for now.

Percentages are still fairly low. Not like the 90% gem rate of recent cards.

You won't have 11,000 gems of any card like an Acuna Update.
