View Full Version : Tracking Number Not Scanned at Post Office

I sold a moderately priced ($175) card. I printed the label with tracking number and insurance and put the package in the blue mailbox at my local post office. Given my preference to stay away from people, I decided not to go inside the post office since I've never before had an issue with items deposited in the mailbox not being scanned. As luck would have it, this particular item, which is of course the most expensive one I've deposited in the mailbox, was not scanned.

Is there a chance that it might get scanned later in the process? I'd think that the delivery person would scan it upon delivery, right? Because s/he wouldn't know that it hasn't yet been scanned?

I’m sure it will get scanned at some point in the process. It’s rare, but I once had a card that took two weeks to get someone. There was only one scan, the one that said delivered.

Should get scanned when it leaves the original post office, when it gets to your state's processing center and when leaving it. So yes, it should a few times. I've heard people say that packages haven't gotten scanned all the way until delivery. I've never seen it. Just keep an eye on the tracking number and when you can have alerts emailed or texted to you.

Detroit has been horrible for me lately. I wish they'd switch where all the mail goes to for the time being. Not worried about catching anything. It's just been really slow since Covid19. They have better things to worry about then getting mail out in Detroit.

In having a lot of things that say they'll be here one day and the scanning process is great, and then they dont arrive for a few days or a week later. I dont mind that they're getting here late due to what's going on, but just agreeing Detroit is on the slow end.

It will get scanned at some point. I have a nice card stuck in purgatory at the Newark distribution center right now.

I used a different post box than normal last week due to Covid. Package wasnt scanned until 2 days later at its next stop. The one I normally use scans that evening. So I would say your situation is not abnormal.

i've had packages that the only scanned was it being delivered so no need to panic.

when I leave packages in my locked mailbox for scheduled pickup, 9 times out of 10 the carrier won't scan it when he picks it up like he should (when it does, it shows as accepted). then, half of those times, since the carrier didn't scan it in, they will scan it in at the local office around 8-10pm. then later on that night around 11 it will hit the local NDC. I have a package that was picked up yesterday morning around 10am (email confirmation complete) however was not scanned yet. I'm sure it will hit soon.

With everything going on my local post office is not scanning all packages on site. I have had a batch of 40+ I dropped off a few weeks ago that did not get scanned until they were at a regional facility or even a facility in the buyer's area. They have challenges like all essential businesses that involve people getting sick etc.. Most of my buyers have been super understanding. OP you can always open a request with the post office for missing mail. Alot of times that can magically make a scan appear. Stay safe everybody!

File a missing package report on USPS website. Sometimes it will cause USPS to look for the package, find it, and get it back on track. It's worked for me in the past.

I always take my packages to get scanned and then get a receipt.

Sometimes I might catch my postal carrier and ask her to take it, and she'll scan it on the spot, but otherwise, I always have it scanned at the PO.

Actually, this has happened to me a lot lately. No scans at all until delivery. It's quite frustrating for buyers who like tracking their packages.

Check out this tracking. Had actually just gotten resolved to the fact that I was going to have to refund. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200412/5f4008da00c52f11eca4dd2f5bb419c8.jpg

I have one that's similar that was coming from Hawaii. Moved one time and got stuck somewhere on a deserted island apparently. Finally moved Saturday after 13 days. I figured it got stuck in Detroit and just never got scanned on the way but that's where it arrived on Saturday.

I dropped a card off at the PO last week, never got scanned and now I’m giving the guy a refund. Sucks, but nothing can be done.

I told him I'd issue the refund tomorrow since I didn't want to deal with it on the weekend. He ordered it on April 2nd and I printed the label that day and dropped it off with no update on tracking. What do I do if he wants a refund now? He sent me a PM saying forget about the card just give him a refund.

File for online Updates with the USPS but 1 week is way to early. Do not just refund him, sounds like he is trying to rush a refund in case it does show up. He needs to open a case through Ebay before you refund then wait it out as long as you can before refunding.

They almost always get scanned at some point. I have had them only get one scan at delivery.

Alright. Appreciate the advice. I did open a lost item case with USPS but they sent me an email saying I never dropped it off.

That is not always a guarantee. I have had the receipt in hand before and the tracking online not update.

Then again I don't watch tracking numbers or things like that once I ship it I don't care unless the buyer contacts me.

I always drop off the package for scanning even with prepaid labels

My post office (the staff is quite good) told me that if I put the package in the box it won’t get scanned. That scared me enough that I now always take the extra step.

Ordinarily, that'd be fine, but I'm a bit nervous about COVID. Want to avoid people and lines.

My home PO scans whether I drop off inside, at the box inside or in the box outside. The PO in the town I work is different. But I only use that one now because I go to work so early. They don't scan at all unless you stand in line. Drop in the blue box and they won't scan. Drop it inside and they won't scan. It usually doesn't scan until it gets to Houston.

There is no way people are receiving tracked or insured packages with out one single scan unless the barcode is torn or missing part of the number. So a carrier or clerk doesn’t scan them (believable) but the other scans that they would receive (origin facility, sort facility, distribution, local facility, out for delivery and delivered. All of these people and computers are not scanning the same exact parcel? Come on now let’s be realistic.

Do people not realize there is a pandemic right now?? Holy crap, so many people expecting business as usual. Lots of businesses that are open are working with skeleton crews and taking full precautions which takes extra time. Everything is taking longer and we should expect that. I would have waited at least another week. This guy is probably getting the money and the card.

Next time print off a firm sheet. All of your packages barcodes will go under one firm sheet scan. So 40 barcodes get scanned in by one firm sheet plus the carrier will pick them up. They have to accept the pickup so you know they are all now in the system as received by USPS

Right but I take about 5 things to the post office each day. 4 of the 5 show up As delivered on time and 1 doesn’t even scan. What do you make of that?

Again it happens. Why rush to refund are you scared of the buyer? A neg does not hurt sellers like people want to believe they do on Ebay. Also if the item shows delivered the neg is removable.

It might have gotten into a different bin than your others or anything. The USPS rarely loses packages. They don't even consider a package missing until about 21 days have past

Don't encourage bad buyer behavior by jumping to refund at the first sign of trouble.
