Is NCAA basketball going to fade?

With the news that Jalen Green is going to sign a 500k g league contract straight out of high school, as well as the success of Lamelo Ball and RJ Hampton, are most top players going to go straight pro from now on? Opinions?

Doubtful. Many fans follow college hoops because of the names on the front of the jersey. They couldnt care less about the names on the back of the jerseys.

I have mixed feelings on the NCAA. I enjoy the Tourneys and same for NCAA Football, but the NCAA is absolutely corrupt and don't care about the student athletes at all.

For instance in football, remember last year or the year before when 2 no name guys wanted to transfer to be closer to their loved ones with cancer?

One guy had a mom with a brain tumor, the other had a grandpa with cancer. Both wanted to be closer to them.

The corrupt NCAA blocked both from being eligible.

BUT WAIT, Justin Fields QB at Georgia a 5 star recruit and OSU Tate Martell also a former 5 star both requested transfers and got them instantly.

I'd love to watch the NCAA burn.......

College Basketball fans, for the most part, are fans of the University specifically and then the NCAA Tournament.

Of course there are hardcore fans (like myself) that follow recruiting etc... but most, especially with the one and done guys, don't pay that much attention.

Fans will still watch their teams and fans will still get all hyped up when March Madness starts.

I'd bet money you could survey 100 Ohio State fans right now... and 95% wouldn't even know who Darius Bazley is... and he was Jalen Green before Jalen Green

Yep, us diehards are going to always follow our University no matter what. It seemed like we (UK) were going to lose our top recruit for next year (Terrence Clarke) to the G league as some rumors started to surface but fortunately he has seemingly put those to bed. Now, will there even be a college basketball season? Ugh, I can't even handle thinking about that as it was hard enough missing out on March Madness this past season.

It would actually make college basketball even better if more players just went professional and you had teams recruiting players that will be there 3-4 years. It would make the NCAA so much stronger, in my opinion, without so many players being one-and-dones.

I’m a season ticket holder for KU basketball and I wouldn’t change anything if you told me the best 40 prospects skipped college altogether. The on-court product would be lower but honestly the quality of the games themselves isnt the attraction.

How many people really follow College Basketball because of players? At least over the last say 15-20 years?

Football I get... you know the guys for 3-4 years

Obviously Basketball was like this back in the 80's and early 90's when it was rare for guys to leave earlier than their Junior season.

But the last 25 years? I don't know anyone that "really" cares about who the players are.

There isn't a single player on the Ohio State roster that I'm invested in. I'm only invested in the team winning.

I wouldn't care if that was 5 seniors or 5 one and done guys.

Yeah... I'm sure if we decide to pay the players that will help them grow, mature, and learn about life... especially the high profile freshman that only want to be there for a few months of Basketball anyway.

If you want to pay all players just because you think they should get paid? Go for it. That's a different thread. Paying student athletes across the board (and all sports)

Paying players to try and keep a Jalen Green in College and pretending to care as opposed to just going to the G League? That doesn't do anything.

actually think it would make it better and more watchable.

too much "look at me" type of mentality with the one and done players. to me, college basketball is more about "team" and "teamwork" where as the nba can have the superstar mentality players along with their supporting cast.

Exactly how I feel as well, slowly over time NCAA has become obsolete for me. Overall the kids don't care about it anymore and that is why I loved it so much. The heart they would have on the court/field. Now they even sit out when nothing is wrong just to avoid injuries to not hinder their pro draft expectations.

though i love the college game much more than NBA...and i mean alot more. It's completely changed, almost all one and done now. God forbid they dont pan out in the NBA, most of them that "go to college" for their one year aren't the most cerebral, and would be lucky to be like vin baker (working at starbucks) stay in school kids!

It’s not going to fade. But it’s not going to be the de facto route to the pros anymore - and that’s a good thing in my opinion. It’s good for the players who don’t need the Colleges. It’s good for other leagues who can offer a route. And in the end it’s probably good for the players who decide to go the NCAA route as well.

1) Its the team name that matters, period.

2) Tate Martell was not a 5* recruit. Even though he won Gatorade NPoY. And to prove #1, no one at Ohio St cared he was on the team when they were winning with him on the bench. Nor did they care when he left. Nor did Miami fans care when he sat the bench last year behind 2 mediocre QBs.

I do not believe NCAA basketball will disappear. It will continue to be the #1 or #2 revenue generating sport for most D1 programs.

Sure there will be a few guys who are ready for the NBA at 18 or 19, but the vast majority of future NBA players need time in college to develop. Some will go to the second tier/minor leagues instead, but that route has only been kind to a few. The transition from high school (even the basketball oriented prep schools) to college is much easier than high school to second tier pro basketball.

Sports such as baseball have the high school to pro route because most programs do not offer full scholarships (many "scholarship athletes" only have a fraction of their tuition/board covered) to any of their players. Also most college sports operate at a loss except football and basketball.
