Typically i'm against paying a PSA10 tax... Shaq's rookies are getting to the point of vintage, and there isn't a ton in PSA10 or BGS 9.5 condition. Yes, they over printed, but they are iconic cards. 86 Fleer had a high production run too.

UD 10s are a tough grab. And will continue to be. I think thats how PSA is holding the junk wax market up. Not grading very many more 10s in the future. Like there is 300 some in circulation at the moment, crack them all and you definitely get less than 300 back. Probably less than 100. Lots of 9s have been cracked and have been double entered. So as it stands if a psa 10 is 700-1000ish. Dont see it coming down anytime soon with the low pop. And when 10s go up of jordan, 10s of shaq will see a bump, and when 10s see a bump 9s will see a bump. Seems most price is driven from the top down. Currently supply is very low for stuff im interested in. Thus price wars are abound, something I don’t want to participate in, so im stuck just watching it all unfold and shaking my head. Ship has sailed and damn near everything. I will wait till it comes closer to port before I swim out and try to jump on.

Agree, and just the fact that the black border is a tough grade in general. The card itself is pretty iconic too, I recall this and the Beam Team being highly desired his first few years in the league, all of his cards were desired, but I remember those 2 being on the top.

Ive bought and sold probably 10 collections of basketball cards and looked at hundreds of Shaq RCs that went from pack to binder. 10s don't fall out of the sky. They printed a ton of cards and they cared about the quality like they were.

Yep. That's why i've never really cared about it. I can get the same card in a lower grade or ungraded for 1/10, or sometimes 1/100 of the price. Vintage and cards where it's actually hard to find good condition are the exception. But paying a premium for a graded modern card that's already mint 99% of the time is just laughable to me..
But in all honesty, I hope people keep on buying dem graded bass so i can pick up actual rare stuff people let slide through the cracks.

I'm thinking part of some of the bump on retired guys is because there's no games right now. The Bulls doc is probably helping all 80s/90s stuff as well.
It's funny because in baseball I'm noticing it with prospects. No games = more people bored at home reading all the prospect lists that came out January-March.

Wow, I honestly forgot how insane those numbers were, especially during the Finals. I’m not sure we’re seeing 38 PPG and 16.7 RPG in the Finals again anytime soon. Maybe Giannis would have the best chance of coming closest to those numbers, but that is a stretch considering the Bucks haven’t made the Finals yet. Ugh I just really want basketball to come back. The playoffs were gearing up to be so good this year.

The game was extremely different. I wonder if a lot of those players would succeed in today's NBA.
Talking about that insane finals he had. Does anyone remember who the next best player on the Lakers was? That was Kobe, who averaged a whopping 15.6 ppg, 4.6 apg, and 4.2 rpg in 35 mpg.

I Think finally starting! His high end PSAs are just scarce, and people waking up to what a great guy and player he is! I am buying UD#1 and beamteams... would love to have the classic 4 sport auto out of 150 and I see 3 out on ebay but out of my price range.

I said 300 is low pop for fleer #401
The UD draft pick (diff card) has high pop
Not sure what pop report you’re looking at, but I see only 301 PSA 10s for the Shaq UD RC. There are over 4500 graded 8 and over 2500 graded 9, so it should be pretty obvious that this is a very condition sensitive card and I’m honestly surprised it’s not worth more.

Maybe I'll go on eBay a buy a nice raw UD RC for $10.
Or pay a fortune for one because a card from 1992 is graded.
I'll stick with the raw copy.

Boxes of 1992 Topps Series 2 are now heading up to $125+ per box. Last summer I picked up some of the Shaq rookies I never had the chance to own as a kid. I just checked and I paid less than $50 for my PSA 10 Topps Gold in July 2019. Be interesting to see what ends up happening to his 1992 cards prices once sports opens back up.

I busted one of my boxes of 92-93 Upper Deck and hit a very nice looking Shaq #1 Draft Pick RC. Overall the card looks great, sharp corners, flawless surface, but there is some white on the left edge, so it won’t gem. Might send it in for grading anyway and see if it’s good enough to get a 9.
Pulling this card is making my nostalgia meter go crazy, so I’m looking at some other cheap boxes to break just for fun with chances of pulling a Shaq RC. Question for the experts - do those old Classic Draft boxes have chances of pulling autographs? Or were those buybacks and not available in the regular boxes? I’ve seen a lot of different versions of the Shaq auto from 92 Classic and there is a /2500 version in silver ink and a /500 version in blue ink, and maybe some others. I’m sure the odds of pulling something like this is probably worse than getting struck by lightning, but I didn’t know if it was even possible from a regular box. I think the 92 Classic Four Sport lists on the box that you can pull autos, but the boxes for 92 basketball don’t say anything about autos in the box.

From this Auction, This guy calcs the odd's of getting the shaq 150...
https://www.ebay.com/itm/153904521838?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649
How Rare is the card? Here is the math:
12 Boxes per case x 40,000 cases x 36 packs per box = 17,280,000 packs
(this does not count the jumbo cases, no idea on those numbers)
so 150/17,280,000 = 8.68e-6 or every 115,200 packs or every 3200 boxes or every 266 cases
So odd's of the pulling the Shaq 150 Auto is 1 out of 115,200 Packs!
I believe Most of these are still in the packs from what I have seen.

That's bonkers. A local mom and pop shop had random early 90s junk wax and I bought a box of this about 4 years ago for $5. He literally looked at me and said "here" and threw in a second box FREE. Sooooo you’re sayin there’s a chance?? I was just curious because I didn’t see anything listed on the packaging that says there are autos randomly inserted. Are there a bunch of scrub autos as well that can potentially be pulled from packs? I’m not sure how many guys signed cards from that set.

I remember my friend buying one pack from our LCS back in 92 or 93 (he was a massive Shaq fan) and pulling a Shaq Gold from that one pack. The shop owner said, that’s a $100 card you got there! At the time, Beckett had this listed as a $10 card and there was a x10 multiplier on the gold parallel, haha. Little did he know that he should have gotten it graded and it would be worth much more right now!

If you look at BGS and PSA pop reports, you will find there are not alot of shaq's and they are buried in the boxes still... Jeter card is out of 1100 or so , so you have about 1/11,500 pack chance with him ;)

There was nothing like pulling a card with a high multiplier back then...my best pull ever as a kid was from the 1996 Topps Stars set (I think that’s what it was called, it was the one that had new cards of all of the Top 50 players of all time). I got a Bill Russell atomic refractor that was a $1 card with a x125 multiplier!

Panini seems to do a much better job with inserts on the lower-end products compared to their other stuff, just look High Voltage from Hoops and Net Marvels from Donruss this year. I’ll take those over any of the Prizm inserts from this year, although Optic did have some nice looking inserts. Case-hit inserts like Kaboom! and Downtown seem to do pretty well each year too. I wonder if they will be continuing the Downtown set and putting it in a different product this year, since Cornerstones won’t be released as a stand-alone set.

Well if the argument is PSA 10 rookies went up so it makes sense for Shaq I don’t get it. There are hundreds of examples of cards that are less rare than others selling for more. I’m not even going to argue the Griffey PSA 10 rise is legit or warranted, but these two cards are not the same stature in the Hobby.
The Shaq is a great card and a great rookie, but your comparing it to the most highly collected player of his era in baseball and the #1 card in the inaugural release of any Upper Deck product.
So are you buying Shaq PSA 9 rookies at $500?

No. Dont think id spend more than 85$ max for a 9. But in the current firestorm Im priced out entirely and they will probably never be $85 again so im going to have to come up on my price or take my ball and go home. Or look for 8s. I understand its not a 1-1 comparison. I think the shaq 10 should be in the 850-950 range and 9s in the 65-70$ range. Due to discrepancy of 10-9 pop reports.
The crux is there is 10x more griffey 10s than shaq 10s. So does being “iconic” makes up a huge difference. Iconic makes up 1.5x for price(shaq 1100, grif 1500) and 10x for population(stated previously), so griffey worth 15x more on a par value to shaq. Seems that spread is a bit high. Someone is overvalued or someone is undervalued or a combination. I know theres no magic formula but this is kinda how ideas are bouncing around in my head.

The Shaq Upper Deck rookie (not the Trade Card) is probably the most iconic rookie card made in the time period between the 1986 Fleer Jordan and the 1996 Chrome Kobe. And there's less PSA 10 copies than the Jordan Fleer.
IMO, the PSA 10 Shaq Upper Deck has been realllly undervalued for years.

Agree. There are 300 PSA 10s and will likely not be many more moving forward. The card is 28 years old, and has a lot of 8s and 9s and with the black border, very tough to GEM. I think it is undervalued as well. The Griffey is much easier, but one of the most iconic cards in all sports, ever. Love both.

I've got a Shaq 93/94 Ultra Scoring Kings that I've always considered grading (even though I hate slabs) just because it looks flawless to me. Even the edges and corners are as tidy and sharp as the day it was made nearly 30 years ago! I've only considered grading it out of curiosity to see what it would get because it looks so perfect.
I've got a couple of Jordan Scoring Kings from the same set, that judging by the other graded ones selling right now, should grade an 8 and an 8.5/9. The prices these are going for right now are nuts.
Also got a 92/93 Beam Team Members Only that I picked up for around $40 AUD (which was about $20 USD at the time) about 10 years ago as I collected the set. This is another one I've always considered grading for the same reasons as the Scoring Kings, but Members Only cards always seemed a bit better quality-controlled than the regular ones to me anyway.
Maybe I'll do a bulk submission and see what happens.

The Upper Deck Shaq doesn't get the credit it deserves for the cultural impact it had. I'm not saying it's anywhere near the '89 UD Griffey -- that card is iconic -- but the UD Shaq was a sensation.
It was the first redemption card that actually meant anything. The wait for Series 2 products was unbearable (no series 1 stuff had any of the rookies) but you could pull the Shaq redemption card and mail it out and know that an UD Shaq rookie was on its way to you.
It was crazy. Shaq was everywhere in the culture and nowhere in the hobby. The only thing we had was the redemption card with his silhouette on it. Then they jammed all the redemption cards into holders too small for regular cards, like a CS2 or something, and mailed them all out. At the time I didn't care about condition. I never took that Shaq out of its original holder until I put it in a CS1 to send to PSA. Came back a 7. They just jammed them in there.

Do you know , besides looking pop reports, the print run numbers for the various 92 basketball cards?

The UD redemption was tough. My card sat in a box for decades in the card saver that it arrived in from UD. Only problem, a tiny chip where it stuck to the card saver. No clue if happened over time, or it happened when UD shipped (they came PWE if I remember right)

Yup, PWE with the Shaq crammed in a holder and your redemption card loose in the envelope with a hole punched in it.

While I agree with you that the redemption card did create a huge buzz at the time, it's impact is forgotten because it became the TRADE card that isn't considered the true RC.

Did UD destroy all the unredeemed cards or did they pull a classic games situation where they leaked out? Maybe a stack is sitting in the vault. I think a shaq beamteam or #1 UD draft pick buyback signed would be awesome!

Unopened wax of everything from 92-93 is skyrocketing with lots of people probably looking for Shaq rookies, but for some reason boxes of standard Fleer are going for more than Fleer Ultra and I can’t figure out why...I’ll have to check the pop reports for Shaq RC 10s on both of those and compare. Maybe people think that they can find the Jordan Team Leader in the Fleer boxes? Those are only found in rack packs, but I can see some inexperienced buyers thinking they have a shot at a Shaq RC and a Jordan Team Leader in the standard Fleer boxes.

I was just talking about Fleer vs Fleer Ultra, but Topps boxes aren’t going for big bucks because of the chance at a Shaq Gold (and several different MJ golds). I don’t see a raw Shaq going for anywhere near $400 though. Looks like a raw did sell for $150 today, and PSA 10s are $800-$1K.

I’ve been watching some auctions and the 92 Topps Shaq RC seems to be following what LeBron’s Topps RC did the last few months. The last PSA 10 Topps Shaq RC (base RC, not Gold parallel) sold for $499.99. By comparison, the Stadium Club PSA 10 RC recently sold for only $120. It’s interesting that the “premium” brands (from 1992 standards) such as Stadium Club and Fleer Ultra are selling for so much less than the base Topps.

I have always thought the Hoops Draft redemption #A was his rarest RC. If his prices continue to climb I expect that card to go much higher. Personally my favorite and I don't get the appeal to have the Topps card that is mass produced in comparison.

I think more and more people are also ripping boxes from his rookie year in hopes to find some gems. I don’t know how easy that will be to pull cards that are 25+ years old and will grade a PSA 10, but I’m sure we’ll see pop reports start to increase. I just sent in a 92 UD #1 Draft Pick Shaq that I pulled a couple weeks ago!

Some do and some don’t, it really depends on the set. Upper Deck was great when I opened mine, no sticking and most of the cards were mint, but I also bought some really cheap boxes of Classic Draft Picks and those were almost all complete bricks. I got 8 Shaq RCs in 2 boxes of Classic, and the best one condition-wise might have graded a 9 at best, so I’m not submitting any of those. I have boxes of some other 92/93 stuff (Fleer, Fleer Ultra, Stadium Club, Hoops, Skybox) that I’ll be opening over the next couple weeks/months so I can report any issues here.

I opened a box of 92-93 Fleer Ultra and most of the packs were bricks, but if I was careful enough, I could peel most of the cards off without any surface damage. I hit three base Shaq rookies in the box, and only one of them is grade-worthy. The others has some slight surface damage and a dinged corner. However, if it gems it should sell for double the price that I paid for the box. Fingers crossed!
Also, the All-Rookie Team inserts are supposed to be 1:13 packs, so I figured I would hit 2, or maybe 3 if I was lucky (36 packs in the box). I ended up hitting 4, but too bad they were Clarence Weatherspoon, Latrell Sprewell, and Laettner x2.

Last summer I picked up many Shaq rookies in 9.5 or 10s despite the fact I had many raw versions of them sitting in my basement. Many of them were cheaper in gem grade than the cost of me grading my own raw cards. I have to imagine I’m not the only one in this boat. I PC Shaq and always felt his 90s inserts have been underpriced, but I think we are going to see a huge increase of supply in his graded rookies the next few months with falling prices.

I personally think all 90s cards hit its peak in the past month. A lot of people found there old stashes tucked away in protective cases during covid and sent them all to psa. Only a matter of time before all those come back to flood the market. But at this point, who knows. They could be triple the price in 6 months for no apparent reason. Gotta love it!

I’ve opened several boxes from this year. 1992-93 Fleer will never, ever stick....but the centering is often a big issue with these. Skybox and Hoops uses no gloss unless on certain inserts so no issues there. Ultra can stick but Stadium Club is usually safe.
1993-94 Upper Deck is a very nasty box in terms of sticking. Different year but I’d generally avoid that one

Only the PSA 10s seem to pull any decent value. I got a Dikembe Rejectors out of the box I just opened. Even at one per box and 1:13 for the All-Rookie Team, there was soooo much stuff of this printed, so those inserts are not in short supply. I remember back when this stuff released and the inserts were always more sought after than the base rookies, but somewhere along the way that all changed and the base became much more valuable than the much less available inserts. 3 Shaq base in one box with a very slim chance of getting either an All-Rookie Team or a Rejectors insert.

Man the Shaq Ultra All Rookie and Rejectors were my favorite cards! When I was a kid I was with my older brother and we stopped by the gas station. They sold packs of cards back then and had some 92-93 Ultra. He bought me a couple of packs and he got a few packs himself. I pulled the Shaq Rejectors and was so pumped. That was the biggest card I had ever pulled at the time. They booked for around $80 and that was HUGE back them. I can still see the look on his face, he was soooooo shity!! A few months later I actually pulled the Shaq All Rookie as well. 2 of my fondest memories as a kid. I now have both in a PSA 10 in my PC.

While there were so many printed, the PSA 10 populations are seemingly pretty low with 294 of the Shaq All-Rookie and only 164 PSA 10 Shaq Rejectors. While these may creep up as submissions increase, it is understandable why there is such a big premium for gem mint copies.

They were dollar cards for 25+ years. The pop report will increase exponentially over time. Most of those Ultras were printed pretty well (all things considered) and there was so much 1992-93 Baskeball...so much.

You'll come across others...promise.
The card stock & Centering were mostly good; gloss finish. Back edges were a possible issue. Corners are mostly from handling at this point, given the card's value over the decades.
There were oodles of them available for years; still more are in people's garages I'm sure.

They came out of packs in good condition, but the values for these really tanked in the 90's so a lot of them ended up in the dollar bins and got tossed around so they got damaged. If you want nicer copies of this stuff you need to go on local facebook buysell groups and craigslist to locate junk era collections from the actual collectors from that era. They're not as easy to find these days, the majority of the ones I see are just dealers dumping junk they picked through claiming it was dad's old collection.

9 - 812
10 - 383
Skybox RC PSA pop report:

Low pop cause they weren't worth grading before. Cards aren't condition sensitive but weren't worth much until recently so a lot of the raw ones will have some signs of minor handling wear. I have about a 100 of his rookies, looked them over for grading recently and only have about 10 that are worth submitting.

There are a couple of fallacies wrt shaq 90's production. Try to find a ton of 92 stadium club series 2 with his beam team, good luck and then try to find a psa 10 beamteam. UD, Fleer, Beamteams in gem are very tough no matter how many people search there cards as they are more than likely banged up... on ebay is ud psa 10's in auction, some not PWCC are over 2k and beamteams MO are selling for 5k now. Why ? Well if junk like zion is selling for insane why not shaq? They only came in factory set form so only condition issue was centering. Corners were all sharp. Opened a sealed set last year hoping to get a gem Jordan but it was a little off and 9's weren't' wroth grading so threw them in a box. Looks like it's time to dig that set out.

PSA takes into account standard manufacturing flaws look at all the O-Pee-Chee cards with the jagged edges in PSA 9's and 10 cases. I had a Lebron Bowman Gold that was chipped along all 4 edges that was graded a 9, it's a very low pop, most people aren't aware and don't bother to grade because they expect a low grade.

Really? Didn't know that. If there is even one Shaq Beam Team with no edge issues...then they should not be grading it that way. They should grade it like any other card.
Now, if EVERY card came out that way...that will be different.

With as low as that pop is, I honestly don’t think that’s too bad. Iconic RC of one of the best big men of all time, and there are only about 300 PSA 10. If there are a million Zion variations of colors and Prizms and Holos that all sell for more than that, this Shaq is actually undervalued. I don’t think a PSA 10 Zion Prizm Silver should be selling for more than a PSA 10 UD Shaq #1 Draft Pick, but I realize this hobby defies logic, so anything is possible.

The problem is some of the Zion market have never seen Shaq play, so they can't muster up the $$$$ to pay for a card of a guy they never saw play live. They will muster up the $$$$ for Zion, Tatum, Giannis because they are awesome and they remember many of their big games.
So, when you cut a percentage of the market from Shaq...you are left with the old-timers...it's the sneaker heads that drive up Zion etc...without them, I don't think Zion are where they are at now.

Shaq draft pick psa10 now 2k+ LMAO!!!!
It was only a matter of time. That card was somehow trading at $300-400 a year ago and seemed criminally undervalued relative to top RC's of Kobe, Lebron and Giannis. It's the biggest RC in the time period between Jordan and Kobe, and a very difficult grade.
Now, we can all talk about how the market is overinflated, but relative to Giannis, Luka and Zion Prizms, a PSA 10 at $2,500 is still really undervalued.

I think another thing that is helping Shaq prices is the fact that he is still relevant. He has plenty of commercials, a reality show and a big personality that plays well on NBA pre-game/halftime shows. The young sneakerheads may not have seen Shaq play, but they definitely know who he is. As recent attention has been given to Kobe, Jordan, Pippen, etc, I think people have looked for other stars that were undervalued or underappreciated.

Shaq started playing when I was in 5th grade and though grading certainly wasn’t a thing back then, I knew how important it was for a card to be in “mint” condition and I made sure every Shaq rookie went right into a sleeve and top loader. I never bothered to get the stacks of Shaq rookie cards I pulled graded because most were cheaper just to buy online. I’m very curious to see what happens to the POP reports of many of these cards in a few months. I feel like a lot of Shaq rookies are sitting at PSA and BGS right now waiting to get slabbed and sold.

I got a couple boxes of 92 UD High Series for a pretty good price right before they spiked, I think they were $80 each. So far I opened 1 box and pulled 1 Shaq. IIRC, the #1 Draft Pick is SP compared to the rest of the set, and you aren’t guaranteed to pull one or two per box. Luckily the one I pulled was in really good shape and is on its way to PSA now. I’d be surprised if it got a 10, but I think a 9 is attainable.
There are also a TON of MJs in those boxes. I pulled multiples of just about every card (10+ total MJs in the one box), but interestingly enough I did not pull any of his true base cards from the set. The bummer of the box was that none of the MJs were grade-worthy. They all had a corner ding or a surface issue or some other minor flaw. I won’t send any of those old MJs in unless I’m pretty certain it will gem.

Totally agree, I don’t see the price of the PSA 10s coming down anytime soon, especially for the UD Draft Pick and Beam Team since those are such a tough grade. And actually I was looking at some auctions of the UD Draft Pick in PSA 9 and the one I submitted definitely looks better than some of those 9s, so maybe there’s a chance I get a happy grader on a good day!

Busted a box of 92-93 Skybox and pulled 3 base Shaqs and 5 Draft Pick inserts, one of which was the Shaq I was looking for. These were nice, no bricking and most of the cards were in really good shape. One of the corners on the Draft Pick insert was a little white, so it won’t gem, but two out of the three base Shaqs looked really good and I’ll probably send those to PSA. I thought that Shaq rookie may have been SP but that definitely didn’t appear to be the case with this box! I also got a Shawn Kemp/Gary Payton Thunder & Lightning, which is honestly still a really cool looking card all these years later.
