View Full Version : How much do card graders get paid?

With the number of altered and fake cards getting slabbed, it made me wonder if anyone has any insight into how the payrolls of grading companies work. Are they salaried, hourly, 9 to 5, etc? For instance, if you send in an altered, or discreetly damaged card and it's the last card that a grader has to inspect before they head off for the weekend, do they just phone it in and do a quick lookover on it? Are there expert graders that check their work on higher end cards? Many more questions, but those are a few that come to mind.

either way, i'm sure psa and bgs workers are getting a big bonus since their business has been skyrockting.

That seems awfully low for the low number of graders at psa and amount of cards they take in

The guys who grade the cheap cards for bulk submissions - I would assume they don't get paid much. Probably $15-$20/hr? The more experienced graders will get more. More than one grader looks at each card independently. I'd like to know more of the inner workings and specifics too but the basics of the grading process are a quick Google search away on the PSA website.

Here are all of their Glassdoor reviews, but most of them seem manufactured by the company in an attempt to raise their rating.

Do you mean on record by the company or what they get in "tips"?

An honorable company like PSA?

Since psa is a listed company, you should be able to access this information openly. Or just attended their AGM.

If they only get paid that little. If u slip a $100 bill in the cards you submit, they should definitely give u a lot more psa 10 then

What other jobs exist in the $10/hr range where you handle the amount of $ merchandise you would as a grader? Does not add up

But yes, I also came to make they get paid like waiters, mostly tips joke

I doubt that you have a lot of Ivy League (or hell even just college) graduates that are setting out to make a career in card grading. I would guess 50-60k on the top-end.

Casino worker. But they probably get tipped more, but then again, who knows how much the graders as get “tipped” by those big clients

Minimum wage with perks.

It’s funny that there are no industry regulations which provide any guidance or minimum competence qualifications that certify you as a grader.

Your cards are being graded by folks you went to high school with, and they are financially abused accordingly, sweat shop style.

Probably the most likely, and terrifying scenario

Not enough.

I'd pay slightly higher bulk prices if that meant more graders, better pay for them, and slightly quicker TA.

If grading isn't exactly the kind of job you need a PhD to do* then why have the grading companies got such crazy backlogs? Surely they would make more money if they trained / hired more staff in order to turnaround more cards per week?

*(not trying to look down at anyone's job, I always respect an honest days work)

If they have too many graders, it may cheapen the prestige of the company name and their grades and employees grading ability. It's a marketing scheme. If it is seen as an exclusive job, people will trust them more.

All the $10 guessers are too low, most likely you guys live in other parts of the country and don’t understand California cost of living. Minimum wage is $12, and that’s for like flipping burgers. Average salary of “data entry” is $23, I’d guess you start there and move up with seniority etc.

I know some of you might not like grading or the company, but that doesn’t mean they can just hire any random moron. If I’m a company handling valuable goods like some of these cards, my vetting process is going to be very strict as I don’t want to hire someone who will steal or damage cards and cost me a ton in liability suits or insurance increases.

Blind people get disability too. So I do not think PSA pays them too well.

PSA is in Orange County, its not the midwest where $7.25 is standard.

I'd expect an entry level grader makes 22-25/hr, mid level 25-30, top level 30-40

High end graders- $50 an hour.

If PSA isn't paying this they need to hire new management.

Not enough apparently because they aren't doing their job well at all.

Don’t see how business survives in CA. So expensive. Seems like they could double the graders with same expense in the Midwest

Most (successful) modern businesses start here. Rent / Salary expense are more than other parts of the country but when you're small, talent / funding opportunities >>> expense. Saving $5/hour on 20 graders still isn't much in the grand scheme of things, moving an entire operation to Austin doesn't make financial sense until you can create a significant presence (200+) in the lower cost location
