1997-98 Shaquille O’Neal Ultra not in base set

Was inquiring why Shaq was not in the base set of 1997-98 Ultra? He is in subset 98 Greats though, but other stars has 2 cards at least, 1 in base and 1 in subset. Like Kobe and MJ has 1 copy of base and 1 copy of 98 Greats, even Shaq’s Lakers teamates were in the base sets. It may not be an important topic but just out of curiousity though....

I've seen slights before, but never one on this scale. Obviously one of, if not THE greatest oversight that I'm aware of, for 90s base sets. It's a shame, because a lot of the base cards in this set have very nice photography.

If you look at checklist, the cards #149 and #150 are missing. I think only product manager Michael Philips or product designers Jean and Earl aka Arena Design know the definitive answer to this, and they might also forget. We can only make educated guess. From what I hear, company seemed to send players info prior, and let players preview the card/image, maybe Shaq does not like how the main card looks or the photo chosen. I don’t know Shaq Ultra main card is not made. You learn something new everyday!

You are right. I try to weed out my search entry using masterpiece key words. So 275 card set show up in 271 cards with those two middle cards missing. (I’m exposed not chasing this set. LOL) Of course there is no checklist masterpieces, so 149 and 150 are missing. But indeed those four set numbers are all checklist cards.

I reached out to Jean. She does not know but will ask a few people to see if anything. Good luck.

#274 and #275 are checklists for series 2

ALL of these are FAR superior. The lack of professionalism and the level of incompetence in the sports card industry that plagues 1997/98 products just astonishes me. I hope the person that chose that photo is smoking crack out of a dumpster and is NEVER hired to choose photos ever again.
