View Full Version : eBayer asked for lower price after accepting offer. Cancel or wait for no pay strike?

Sold a card recently on eBay. Buyer made an offer, I countered, they countered, I accepted. A little bit after I accepted the offer the buyer messaged me asking if I can take less for it because they didn't realize that they were going to be charged tax from eBay.
I'm obviously not going to take even less for the card than I had already accepted, IMO the price I accepted is too low, but I'm just looking to move some stuff to make room for more stuff. Anyways to my question. Is it best to just cancel the order, or wait and let eBay auto cancel it when they don't pay and give them a strike?
If I cancel it, I can relist it right away and hopefully get it sold and move on. If I don't then I'm going to have to sit here and wait at least a week, probably more, for eBay to do their thing.

Cancel it and block . Relist it again
Most likely, the buyer will pay. After getting the card, he will will claim some "defect" to the card and asks for partial refund.

Cancel and move on. From the surface, I personally wouldn't give a strike in this situation. It's not an egregious strike worthy offense. The Ebay tax is newer and maybe the seller budget only the amount of the purchase price.

Cancel block and report to Ebay.

Cancel and block. He’s going to get that card, complain about condition and hold it hostage to get a partial refund. Dispatch the bastard.
Post his ID here so we can block him too.

Cancel block and report to Ebay.
You've received great advice, agree with all the above. This only ends badly for you going ahead with the sale and shipment.

Cancel and block. That’s the kind of BS that gives eBay buyers a bad name.

Cancel & block...lots of minutiae to avoid in the bay these days...I had to actively police a larger ticket auction recently to thwart a slew of (0) feedback bidders. This is some serious suckage of late. Also had to cancel to auctions because they "thought" it was a gold when it was a bronze.
Lame-o.

I would've waited and filed a non-pay
Hopefully ebay credits you the final value fee.
FYI, a buyer asking for a discount after accepting an offer is not a valid reason for cancellation.
Best would be to contact eBay imo

Playing devil's advocate here:
Say, per chance, that said buyer only has x amount to spend on a card. (Like when my wife lets me have some walking around money). They look for a good deal to try to stay below or x and find a deal that is agreed to both parties.
eBay does not show that sales tax will be charged until well after the final bid/best offer is accepted. Apparently it's not in their best interest to do so before hand even if it's in the best interest of the other parties.
That being said, I hope everything works out for you.

Actually it is a valid reason it falls in the abusive buyer. Just select buyer wanted to cancel and be done. If he negs you the neg is 100% removable.

Not allowed
Requesting a shipping service not offered by the seller
Requesting the seller ship to an address other than what you included in checkout
Requesting to use a payment method not offered during checkout
Requesting the seller hold your item so you can pay later
Requesting a partial refund without returning the item
Request additional items or services not included in the original listing or asking for a discount
Finding an item on eBay and taking the sale off eBay
If you let it remain open there is a good chance the buyer could pay and cause you bigger headaches. I would rather them not pay me get full refund of fees and than them pay force a return after they possibly damage the item intentionally then not get a fee refund of fees when I refund. Plus have the return defect on your account.

That buyer has 90 feedback and also has an item listed for sale. He should be well aware by now that eBay collects sales tax from buyers.

Unfortunately we are all too lazy to read the user agreements updated every single month. Almost impossible to keep up. But tax is tax is tax....been over a year now for eCommerce.

I'm less likely to believe the tax excuse if they are a long time account user. depending on the value of the card, i might reply that they need to honor the purchase because they entered into a lol 'legal contract' and see if they are psycho enough to try and return for damage.

Cancel and move on. No need to waste anymore time on what could develop and turn into a bigger problem. It best to be patient and find the right buyer.

Why risk it? The return counts as a strike against the seller. There is very little chance the seller will win the claim and they could intentionally damage it. And all that becomes your word against theirs with maybe some circumstantial evidence that would likely be ignored. Then you will be out shipping both ways and out the fees from the listing and payment.
Cancel block and report them to Ebay is the best option.

The sales tax is still being rolled out on a state by state basis. Ours apparently hit on July 1 and I was definitely shocked when a $300 item I won a day or two later ended up costing me $330 (and I didn’t know until it was time to submit payment info). So, while it’s obnoxious, it could be that it’s the first item he’s won since the change.

He is in California. We have had sales tax on eBay here for over a year. Since I'm also in California, he would have paid sales tax, even before the new sales tax laws took place.

The user agreement and proposal for this came out in 2018 well before the eCommerce tax came into effect. There were massive petitions which none passed on all formats.
It is strange how some states effect date were delayed...but they were still preparing us 2 years in advance.
