View Full Version : Seeking assistance on a basketball card trade situation (delivered but not received?)

Background

I recently posted some cards in the basketball B/S/T section. A BO member reached out to me to work a high-end trade. Generally, I don't trade (because it's risky) but the offer was good and the BO member had great feedback. Before the trade, I explicitly requested for insurance to be used on both packages because "you just never know".

Issue

USPS tracking of my package (to him) says that it was delivered on 7/10/20 (Friday) at 11:06am. The member said that he didn't receive it then nor on the following day.

What to do

First, there's the issue of believing the individual. He has strong BO feedback and seems like a straight-up guy but I've never worked a deal (or seen him around BO) with him prior to this attempted trade. With that said, I do mostly believe him because I've had USPS previously mark "delivered" on a couple items that showed up day(s) later (and in at least one case, weren't ever received).

Second, what are some follow-up actions that can be performed to help resolve the matter? I searched some previous threads and saw the following suggestions:

Check with neighbors.
Check with post office.
Check with post office and see if they can offer up GPS for scanning.

Are there other actions I can recommend?

Third, if the member were to never receive the package from USPS, what's the proper action(s) to take in this situation?

Just a heads up but I'm pursuing the insurance claim option now because the package was never discovered (it was incorrectly delivered to some random warehouse). USPS initially denied my original claim stating that it was delivered so I needed to provide them with the photos showing that it wasn't (which I obtained from someone within USPS).

If they deny my first appeal, is there a direct contact you'd recommend reaching out to? I don't want to blow my second appeal because of USPS' unwillinnessg to take responsibility for this mistake. Basically, there's evidence that USPS didn't deliver to the mailing address on the package and the USPS contact at the receiving USPS office confirmed it too.

Was signature confirmation used ? I'd give it at least a few days but if the member claims to have never received the items and signature confirmation wasn't used all the liability is on you. Hopefully they turn up.

Unfortunately not.

Any suggestions on what can be done other than checking in with neighbors, local USPS, and opening up a case on USPS.com?

Been years since I posted, but I can tell you 100% go to the post office and report that he item is missing. They can search for the package location by using the Scan Tool that scans the tracking number. It records where the item was scanned according to GPS location and I can tell you it is accurate to within 10 feet (had issue w a goalie glove, was delivered one block over and the box was right where she left it according to the scanner/tracker).

You might need to contact the delivering post office, but check with yours. Also,
With insurance if it wasn’t delivered to the right house- I’m pretty sure you get your money back. If delivered by priority mail, you’re covered up to $50.

Same here. I recently made a purchase on eBay and item showed as delivered but nothing at my door or mailbox. I gave it a couple of days in case USPS put it in the wrong box or hoping my neighbors would drop it off to me.

Nothing happened so I filed a claim with USPS as I felt the seller wasn't at fault. Got a call within the week and they told me the seller wrote a one instead of a seven on my address and that it was delivered to the wrong address ending in '2' lol. So it was kinda both the seller and USPS fault.

I asked the USPS rep if she was sure that it wasn't a seven since a one could pass off as a seven and she said "no sir, I'm looking at the package right now and it definitely says one".

So I'm assuming they take a picture and use GPS as mentioned since they could tell which house it was delivered to. They sent someone the next day to the house to recover the package and luckily they found it for me.

Hope this helps.

I would just wait a couple more days. I had this happened to me last week with a card i received from ebay. It said it was delivered. I looked and nothing was in the mailbox. Looked the next couple days and nothing as well. Waited and looked a couple more days later and it was in the mailbox finally.

Don’t wait. You need to contact the PO immediately. As stated above by other members the USPS is able to use GPS info to see exactly where something was delivered. If in fact it was misdelivered then the longer you wait the more unlikely it will be to track down. Good luck.

Hey guys, thanks for your input! The item has already been reported missing but I'll be sure to contact their (and my) local PO tomorrow morning to see if they can, and are willing to, search for the package location with the GPS tool.

Thank you guys for chiming in too. Hopefully it's nothing worrisome, but based on the input above, I'll assume the worst and reach out to the local POs because time seems to be of the essence.

Just following up on the matter.

The package was delivered to the wrong location. USPS is still trying to re-locate the package, but as the days pass, I'm less optimistic.

It's been 17 days since it was "delivered". The person on the other end of the trade has been consistently contacting his local PO and being very patient with the matter. I reached out to his local postmaster via email and haven't received a reply. I actually made my first call to his local PO today (need to call back later in the day to connect with the local CS person who's been dealing with the matter).

At this point, should we give USPS a few more days to try and resolve the matter? Or should we initiate a USPS insurance claim? What sucks for me is that I underinsured my cards to save on shipping fees because I wasn't expecting something like this to happen ($500 insurance on about $750-$800 worth of cards).

Also, USPS has incorrectly delivered some packages to the same location. They even recovered some packages delivered (a few days before mine) to that location last week. That alone makes me want to wait a little more.

If you recommend that we start the insurance claim, should I also file a police report too? I don't know what to do in these circumstances. USPS has previously lost a couple of my packages (most expensive being $150-$200) but they weren't insured so I was forced to take it on the chin and move on.

Yeah, someone actually helped me with that.

That's how I know (and the local PO office confirmed to the person at the other end of the deal) that it wasn't delivered to the correct location. Instead of a residential location, it was delivered to a random warehouse. But the local PO hasn't successfully retrieved it from the warehouse yet (not sure what the hold up is as it's quite close to the local PO office) :/

For me, anything that is a side deal (ebay, forum, fb, ig) and over $100, i do signature required, I even pay the extra shipping (on their end) so people don't bitch.

Yeah, that was a mistake on my end. I should've done signature confirmation on this package.

i do not know about all places, but in some places sig. required delivery just is not happening now.

had a package arrive the other day that was "sig. req." but is was setting on the front porch. have heard this from others as well.

Your situation is have the person check the neighbors. Just this past week, I received 2 packages in the mail, but for some reason 1 says delivered, at porch. It doesn't make sense because the package would fit in the mailbox. I immediately when to the USPS.com to file a report. After the 3rd day, my neighbor came to me with the package. Luckily, it was a group break no-hit pack-- a lot of base cards.

In your case, if it says delivered- most likely delivered to wrong address. Worst -case scenario his family kept it and he didn't know it.

it was delivered to some random warehouse? Are the addresses even close? Or did the buyer have you send to a commercial location and they got it wrong?

It was delivered to a random warehouse (SimpliSafe Warehouse per Google).

The addresses aren't close because it was supposed to be sent to a residential address.

this just happened to me today, but Im the buyer, not seller.

Tracking shows it was delivered "to mailbox", but it wasnt in mine. I live in a community where we have 12 mailboxes grouped together so Im guessing the mail man simply put it in the wrong mailbox..

Not taking sides but this has happened to me before.

Two auctions were marked delivered same day but only got one. The PO basically told me to take it up with the seller after harassing them multiple times. To the OP, if you have insurance you may have to go through them, otherwise not really sure what you can do about it.

The guy has been calling his local office periodically (I've also called a few times). Basically, the USPS representative acknowledged that they often mistakenly deliver packages to that warehouse. It doesn't make sense that they do it so often but that's what we were told. Sounds quite shady IMO. In any case, I think I'll have that rep send me an email from his USPS account to confirm that if the 1st appeal isn't approved.

I hope that's the case for you and you get it back. If they delivered it elsewhere, good luck man. Seriously.

Yeah, I did insure it (although I uninsured it a couple hundred dollars as I wasn't expecting for it to go missing). They outright denied my original insurance claim stating that their records show that they delivered it. Ironically, I have their GPS tracking images showing delivered to a random warehouse and not a residential location (the mailing address was residential). In any case, I've appealed and attached those photos (2 shown in this thread) so hopefully they'll approve now. But pursuing the insurance claim process is such a pain and I wouldn't be surprise if they deny again because it seems like that's what they want to do :/

Ouch.. after looking at my ebay purchased, it actually shows FIVE packages delivered. I received one, so im out 4 packages, two of which had 2 cards in them, so 6 cards total.

And that was yesterday so, with today being Sunday, it won't be until tomo until I can talk to the postman or go into the post office..

Probably SOL.

It's also possible that some (maybe not all) of your packages haven't actually been delivered yet. I've had early "Delivered" scans only to receive such packages in the following days. Hopefully that's the case for some/all your packages because missing 4 is ridiculous.

I'd definitely talk to the postman and/or local office. Also, maybe it's the way your mailing address details (including specific mailbox) are being displayed on the label. Maybe fix that via eBay/PayPal?
