How I've been taking advantage of the hobby "shift": Mega Update

Long story short, I've changed my collecting strategy significantly since the post-COVID card price increases. I had an epiphany one night after getting blown out of the water on Kyrie and Deandre Jordan 1/1's that I was sure I had bid enough on to win. I am of the belief that many of the card price increases are not sustainable (outside of the superstars), so I figured instead of fighting it rather to take advantage of it by selling those cards that I saw returns of 5-100x return on, and put it into something that I know will hold value, is more scarce, and is something that I will cherish at least as much as the cards sold.

Fortunately, I haven't sold much of my main Nets collection. The majority of this was paid for selling duplicates, graded RCs (including the profit on a Kyrie Prizm PSA 10 RC directly paying for the Quincy Acy jersey), soccer flips (often selling cards in lots at $5-15 per when the cost was $0.18-$1 per thanks to Sportslots and Becket Marketplace), and some old inventory that has appreciated significantly in value.

The total out of pocket cost on top of my sales profits is roughly $650 or so. The rest was funded through sales and flips.

I’ve been doing the same thing except what I’ve been buying is mostly Nuggets, Tim Duncan and 90’s cards. I’ve actually been working on a post of my own I just haven’t found the time to take pictures of everything. Hopefully soon..

That’s fair, and that’s your point of view. If I was an investor, I agree with you. But I’m a collector. I could sell LeVert’s I own at 25-33x ROI if I wanted to but I collect him. Most of what I sold from my collection was not in the Nets uniform and have hundreds or thousands of copies. Every jersey I acquired is a 1 of 1.

I would also take all the game worns. Obviously they're much more difficult to resell, if you even can at all. But having a jersey worn by a player in an actual game is much more valuable to me than a piece of cardboard with that player's picture. I can print out pictures of my favorite players if I wanted to scratch that itch, which I can't do with a game worn jersey.

To each his own, even many collectors uninterested in resale prefer the cards to the jerseys, which is understandable.
