I have a buyer asking me to write on the customs form that the declared value is significantly less than what he’s paying for it. He says he wants to save on duties and tax. Is this normal Canadian friends?

Yes, it is normal. If you declare value at $500, then we might get dinged for like $80 by customs.

If they don't want to pay the GST should just buy Canadian instead. It's not like they don't have card shops over there.

I'm guessing the buyer sprang the tacky request after the sale.

It’s a $1300 transaction and he wants me to write $100. Lol

Assuming you will have some insurance with your shipping method, if anything happens in transit the seller will get stuck with nearly the entire bill. The buyer should be embarrassed to ask.

What benefit is there with putting the $1300 price for customs, just so they get screwed out of $300? Clearly the buyer is at the mercy of the seller in this situation, but most sports card shops here focus on hockey cards.

If the item is insured, seller will get stuck with the bill if anything happens to the package in transit unless you assume that nothing will ever happen during cross-border shipping.

Why should the seller get stuck with a bill that has nothing to do with the cost of doing business? Customs charges are the buyer's sole responsibility.

Yah, it's a thing.
It's a nice surprise when US buyers do it on their own accord. I, personally wouldn't ask for it to be done just because i'd feel uncomfortable if the roles were reversed.

duties and customs does suck for us, sometimes I get 0 and sometimes you have to pay an extra $60 or something depends on the agent that day.
