You’d think Panini and/ or Walmart would want people to know about a new product they might want to buy rather than sneakily release it with little notice.

Between Chronicles retail releasing sometime soon and Illusions retail maybe showing up, things are going to get even crazier in the trading card aisle at Walmart in the next few weeks.

There are some similarities, but I think the photography for Essentials was quite good. I'm also a big fan of the Swish Kings insert and the Platinum parallel (among may other inserts that are nice looking).

Not sure. Nobody hinted at the US link being live until after the Canada link was already up. The US link just doesn’t exist right now. It’s not that it isn’t searchable.

There was a rumor in the baseball section that MJH had sold a significant portion of its Chronicles stock to a third party. Should be able to figure out soon if that’s happened here.

Swish Kings, Kings of the Court and Franchise Foundations are beautiful cards and some of the best inserts from 2017-18 IMO. Platinum is super nice too but I've only seen a Brook Lopez in hand.

One of the local WM stopped carrying sports cards because of theft at the end of 2019. One of my wife's uncles is an evening stocker and he said store management made the choice. They still carry Pokemon/the like but that is it. Hopefully it's not something similar.

That would be awful! I mean it is crazy down here though. During the Optic release I went in when the rep happened to be stocking and talked to him for a bit.

He said three people had come up before me while he was working on the pokemon restock and demanded he open up the boxes so they could see if he had optic and he basically was like F off haha because they were being jerks. I walked up saw that Optic wasn't there said good morning to him and started to leave and because I wasn't a jerk he was like are you looking for optic and gave me some but when we were talking he was saying how crazy people have gotten and what not. I hope the jerks didn't ruin it for the rest of us collectors - especially since you can't touch hobby without spending $1k. I went to my LCS to see if he had Chronicles - they were $1200 a box and he wouldn't sell them by the pack because it was too easy to tell the patches/autos.

That would be awful but it wouldn't surprise me - I mean MJ Holdings is a publicly traded company and Wal-Mart has been known to not work the best deals for their clients because they have the distribution. With the crazy runup of specific cards - Blowout can probably offer MJ Holdings 50% more than WalMart was paying them or a better distribution of profits and still make a killing on them and WalMart just let it go because in the grand scheme of this WalMart isn't making enough on their sports card relative to the rest of their products.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t Walmart just rent out the space to MJH? Historically, MJH needed that space to move product. Well now they don’t. And not only do they not need the space, they can sell direct, no hassle, for multiples of what they were getting previously.

If every year was like this year for basketball then yes it would make sense, but every year is not like this year and the bubble will pop. BO won’t want to be left holding the bill either. I know Excel at least has a company policy not to sell to people if they have the intent to resell. I heard that from a rep directly.

When I was hunting Prizm, before everyone and their dog was stalking the reps, I talked to the MJ guy and he would tell me that the sheets would tell him what to send back. Since the product is shipped directly to the store, the rep would look on the sheet he was sent and either put the product on the shelf or send it back. I'm guessing there is a lot that is just going back if the Walmart employees don't get into it first.

I walked in to my local WM today to find the card aisle being replaced with a line of Coke product reefers along what was the whole check lane length.

When I found the card section it looked like this. No sports trays and few sports left if you consider WWE a sport.

True, I assumed once it was public knowledge the Canada link existed and no one produced a US link for at least a week that it didn’t yet exist.

I work for a company that manufactures/retails highly desirable product, similar to sports cards, and if any of our distributors started selling the product to retailers at a markup they’d be out, pronto. Some of the story about MJ selling to BO seemed believable, I’m just a little skeptical that panini would be ok with that. Particularly with the size of Walmart, I’m sure they value that indirect relationship.

I tend to agree with this more or less. My understanding is the rumor all stems from one post in the target thread where a guy says he heard MJ is selling to BO. Now I will say the Walmart images having BO watermarks makes you scratch your head, but I would not think Panini would be down with MJ taking inventory intended for Walmart and diverting it at several times markup to BO.

My local Walmarts have the same card section size so I can't really speak to this. Ultimately, who receives the plan-o-gram space is a Walmart decision (not the distributor). Seems counterintuitive that Walmart would cut a product category that sells out instantly and has groups of people hanging out in their store for hours.

I haven’t seen that in my area yet, so not sure. If it turns out to be true I would be very careful if I were MJ, as if I were in panini’s shoes in this scenario I would pull whatever product MJ is diverting to BO and sell it directly to BO myself. No need for MJ to middleman a transaction with an account they already do business with.

Maybe there is a supply chain issue with Sports cards and you are seeing the effect of that so MJ is filling the missing inventory with other items. Remember MJ supplies a lot more than sports cards so they might just be filling the space with random stuff until sports product starts coming back.

This seems like more of a supply issue than a complete change in business model by Panini, Walmart and MJ. Didn't Panini just state that Illusions is a Walmart exclusive? That makes me believe that Walmart is still supporting cards.

One last thing, if MJ stopped selling to Walmart, Excel (Target's rep) would just swoop in and take that business.

oh wow... very interesting. from my terrible detective brain: unofficially MJH withheld products hence why shelves are empty.And then sold to 5 other "big" clients asap to recover losses. Which means we will never see $20 blasters ever again at target or walmart. I don't see MJH selling products to LCS's because that will be 1000s of contracts they'll have to sign so all the top online card shops will just get all products for cheap and they can control the market?

I don't know if the theft is relatable to sports cards though. I think bribery and secondary market are more the issues. If it was bribery, i don't think the middle men would still be in it. So, i guess this MIGHT be about stopping the sale of sports cards at msrp from the get go. :(

I think bribery is huge but I'm sure the sports cards see their fair share of theft as well.

I've seen numerous posts of people getting boxes or cellos for the price of one cello. My biggest take away is the self checkout and cashier's to an extent.

It's so easy to scan a hanger or blaster and bag a megabox. I was buying some cards once and I happened to get lucky and clean out a new release and I was scanning too quick I guess so it gave me an "item not bagged" message so I had to wait for someone to clear it. I was ready to explain what happened as I probably already had a bag literally filled to the top with product and the lady just looked at it, asked what it was and scanned her badge. She didn't even bother to verify what I had scanned.

It's bittersweet to not have retail but online above MSRP is realisticaclly the only chance a lot of people have.

Backstock means that's all there is. All stock goes on shelf, not in the back room, etc.

Yeah I’ll buy a little to rip and a little to hold in case I’m wrong. But with this being at $40-45 before shelves stock today this has a really good chance to touch MSRP. FWIW, there being 3 displays of this at my super rural WM means there has probably been a nuclear f*ck-ton of this printed.

Took all. Left Chron for the next guy.

I keep saying this but THIS might be the one I buy and actually resell. Haha. Money to be made but I typically open all MSRP retail I get(though I did LEAVE contenders on the shelf when it came out). Maybe, if I find it, I'll actually buy and resell illusions. But anyone saying not to buy it is telling others not to make money. It'll sell and people will make money, so buy it if you see it.

I got lucky and found Chronicles and Illusions blasters finally at MSRP. Just bought 5 of each and left the rest for the other guys that will be looking for it. There was probably 20-30 Illusions left and another 5 Chronicles. I’m excited to open it. Goodluck with your search guys.

Is it possible for Walmart’s in the same county would stock different days? Went by 4 at lunch, 2 had no signs of these but 2 had empty boxes and had to have just been stocked. Actually saw a guy leaving at 1 with about 3 bags of em so just missed one. Bummer but what can ya do.

hardly any hobby, won't be at target or other retailers as it's a wal-mart exclusive and basically impossible to get online with the bots running constantly....anyone who finds these in stores would be foolish to not take them. $50 will be the lowest they get.
