What was the first card you went out of your way to spend more than you usually would on a card?
I'm normally looking to buy cards under $20, but occasionally I've went outside of that. The first time I bought what I consider a high end card, was back in January 2019 I bought a 2009-10 James Harden Classics RC Auto /499. I think it was like $190.
I've only spent that much on two or three other cards. But it's fun when you're able to add something like that. I'd love to hear other's stories!

Last year I spent $200 for a Luka auto and couldn’t believe it. $200 for a non auto now is routine. Funny how times change.

I bought the black Prizm from 2013-14 for my Ty Lawson PC to finish the rainbow. Most I had spent on a card by far and glad I did, love the rainbows

I PC Bruce Brown Jr. Late last year I bought a NT RPA Gold for around 200. It was my first purchase over 100 and it felt exciting but also wrong. I kind of didn't feel good until I had the card in hand and then everything was great. No ragrets now.

My first big purchase was a PSA 10 Topps McGwire RC when I was 18.
I paid $1500 at the time and sold a few months later at $6000 after he broke the HR record back in '98

The first time I bought was a steph curry classics auto rc for 450 in 2017. Funny thing is the price was doubled up when the warriors entered the finals, I sold it right away and bought my second and third high end cards which were a slightly defected kd topps chrome refractor rc for around 500 and a steph auto for 300. Thats the first time I realized the value of cards could go up that much lol.

I distinctly remember the first time I bought a Mitch Richmond for over $100. It was about 7 years ago and it was the first BIG time 90s Mitch in my PC and, arguably, still the best (easily top 5 either way). A store had it on ebay for months for a BIN/OBO that I'd made an offer on but been swatted away, but they put it up for auction and I won it for $122.50. The card?
1997-98 Metal Universe Championship Precious Metal Gem /50...in PSA 10. Last one went for I believe $600 raw. Definitely not why I collect but the come up has certainly been fun to watch on cards like that on which I got in early. In the same month I distinctly remember starting to focus on quality over quantity which meant two things: Slowing down on buying 90s wax, and working to buy singles I liked. I created a "$50 for one MJ" thread to see what I could get.
Found a card I liked, bought it, sent it to BGS, it got straight 9s. It was a 93-94 Scoring Kings. How times have changed lol.

I don’t think I had spent more than $40 on a card until this year. In the last couple months, I’ve gone over $100 a few times thanks to prices consistently climbing but I still stay with stuff under $40 for the most part.

Well anyone has been in the game for a while now is probably in the higher end game now with the way the prices have raised.

I bought a "Standing O" Lebron Rookie card in a PSA8 for close to $300. That's my largest purchase to date. I just really wnated to have a LeBron rookie card and it was the nicest and one of the only ones I could afford.

Michael Jordan ‘95 beam team and then his rock stars insert. Spending close to $200 on a couple singles really did seem like a big time card spend years ago

Bought a Kawhi Fleer Retro auto here on the boards a year or two after I joined for around $120 I think.
Had never spent $100+ on a card before but paid up because I loved the design, the SDSU uniform, and the on card signature :)!

Missed out on a Luka Courtside PSA 10 for $2700 so I bit the bullet and paid $3200 a few days later. I felt like I overpaid but, we've since had a couple more sales with the last one being $4200 for the same card.

Myself (eBay)- Luka BGS 9/10 Hoops Auto for $80, wrong title
myself (here)- Altuve BGS 9.5 2011 Update Gold, and Blue for $200
For someone- Luka PSA 10 Purple Pulsar #/42 $650.
My max on card is below $50 unless I know it is severely under-priced. I don't remember paying above $50 on a single card recently. The last time was a PSA 10 Dzanan Musa Rooke Select Gold Auto #/10 for $50. Seller had it for $100, next day he was sending offers to watchers. For hot retail wax that I find out of the blue, unlimited. I spent $1000 on 2019-20 Prizm BKB with a friend, I felt like I got heartattack, but I was thinking further that I will make the money back selling it.

2016-17 Curry Impeccable Auto /25 in mid 2018. Was maybe $260ish. I’ve since spent $1k+ on quite a few cards, nothing over $5k, and I don’t consider myself to be a high end collector or low end collector... I’d say lower high end while still collecting plenty of refractors under $10 of PC players. It was the first Curry auto I ever bought and first time I had ever spent over $100 on a single card as far as I can remember. I started collecting Curry for my son, so I’ll probably never sell that one since it’s sentimental.

My first big purchase was when Service Merchandise went out of business they had a sale on their memorabilia, 50% MJ UDA Photos! Bought 2 for $200 each. Still in high school at the time so that was a huge purchase. Never spent that much on anything but knew it was a great deal. When Vinsanity cards caught fire I was able to sell a few and put it right back into Steve Francis and Corey Maggette cards! Luckily Yao Ming and LeBron came along soon after.

I remember buying the Karl Towns rookie silver prizm for just under $200 to complete my UK Prizm set. I hated it but thought they would definitely go up.
On the plus side, I've been building Prizm sets since 2012, so apparently I'm a higher end collector now.

Every Dominique had ever bought was less than $75 or so before I splurged and spent around $150 on a 1997-98 Autographics CM /100 sometime around 2002.
Those college refund checks came at just the right time. Oh, yeah, I still owe on my student loans.

I have rarely bought a card over $500, but with the price of wax being too expensive to buy, I saved up for singles. This year I bought a zion optic blue /59 for $1100, and promptly sent it to PSA...and USPS lost it...so some of you got a theoretical bump in value as it's now out of /58...but f my life on that....

I can relate. Buying $20 and under rookies / autos / game used. First couple larger purchases for me were a Oscar Robertson RC for $125 and a Bird / Magic RC for $100.

Greetings fellow peasants!
The first time I crossed my imaginary threshold was a Westbrook Chrome Orange RC Refractor. Cracked it out of a PSA which drew some ridicule

I am a budget collector of $200/Month but early this year I broke down and wanted to purchase something I considered high end which I found an LBJ Finest XRC PSA 10. What I didnt know is this would open the floodgate where I am still a budget collector, but from time to time I will spend a couple hundred on a card I really want. I actually enjoy the hobby a little more buying bigger cards from time to time. It really helps round out your collection.
But I also follow this rule 100%, no matter what, I never dip into savings or buy something where the amount is not available in checking.
I believe keeping this a fun hobby for me is the goal to success. Actualy my big goal in life is to open a card shop for the kids. But for now I have a great career that I love and will support me and my family until that day comes that I could transtition to a sports shop.

I collect Luka and tend to stay around his mid-range cards but recently bought a Luka dragon 2nd year for about 1,500. Only reason I was able to get it was because it coincided nicely with a work bonus. Otherwise I try to spend 2-400 a month.

PSA 9 03 Topps Chrome Lebron Rookie in 2017 for $285. As ass backwards as it was I would drop $150 on a box without blinking when I was younger but wouldnt pay more thank $50 for a single card

Been lurking for a while and I'm glad the mods cleared me to post. Started collecting in 96-97 and was fortunate to have collected some Kobe rookies. Stopped buying after the 97-98 season after watching Duncan cards do nothing!!! Recently got back into buying this past year after learning of the hyped 2019 class. In December of last year, I had to pull the trigger on a Zion Silver Prizm and I thought I was nuts. Paid like $575 shipped and was thinking what have I done? Anyways, recently submitted it to BGS (my first sub ever) and it graded 9.5 true gem. It is now at PSA hoping to cross it over to a 10.

I'd love to hear other's stories! My biggest collection is E'twaun Moore as he was my guy at Purdue. Shipping is generally the priciest part of the purchase which tells you something. But his 12/13 Prizm Gold is out on auction right now. 1st I have seen. Honestly it's an ugly card in a way with a Celtics jersey but Magic team logo..and the colors all clash. A bit unfortunate his RC is part of the most popular set out there. This will likely be my 1st "big" purchase. Add in the 1000% Prizm bubble inflation and there ya go.
Overspent on a Carsen Edwards RPA ($120) just to grab one. To date that's my most $$ card purchase. If only I was so disciplined buying wax.

Bought a 1996 topps chrome MJ refractor for $1200 last year. Glad I did. Figure it was his 1st year "topps chrome" refractor there's no where to go but up. Plus, what's the chance of buying an unopened 96 chrome box for $5k and pulling one? $1200 made more sense. I was right for once.

Most expensive card I've bought a Giannis BGS 9 Base Prizm for 355 (including taxes) back in April. Second close was a soccer 1/1 that cost me 350 flat about a year and a half ago.
Both are way up and pretty much even. Maybe I should start spending more lol.

I was buying mostly $5-$10 max on single cards in the 90s along with cheap(er) packs. I was basically broke living paycheck to paycheck, but remember laying 3 crisp $20s on the table at a card show for a Kevin Garnett Upper Deck Electric Gold Rookie parallel and thinking "why am I spending this much on 1 basketball card"? Lol:) Still have it and glad I made that decision a quarter of a century ago! :D

100 used to be my cap... I’ve spent over a thousand on only two cards and I think those cards would still sell for that. Breaking a hundred is a lot more common now but anything over 200 I havta pump the breaks and really consider it
