View Full Version : Consensus on grading: do it yourself or use a service?

Hear a lot of people who state they think grading groups who submit a lot are more likely to get 10's compared to doing it yourself because they want to maintain business with them.
Do most people feel it's better to let other groups grade your cards, or do you feel this is just a theory?

There is a grading sub section in the forum. This question is better suited to be asked there.

I have been collecting PSA 10’s before it was cool... yes I’m bragging... yes it’s true
I’ve never sent a single card to PSA
What does that mean? Nothing
Just wanted to say it

now you see.... *i* have been collecting 9's since 2005. THAT would be "before it was cool"

My bad, probably should've looked a little harder to find the grading section.

I’ve graded with PSA for years and have always submitted cards myself. Generally I get the grades I expect (including many 10s) so based on that I’d say you’re no more likely to get 10s just because it’s part of a group.

The advantage is in bulk where you can get the bulk discount through the group sub if you aren’t submitting 100 cards on your own. $12 per card vs $20 per card on your own.

So if you're submitting 100 cards on your own basically it's like getting 40 cards for free if you have more than 60 cards to grade?

This example is for ultra modern, but it’s all on psa website.
If you are submitting 100 cards on your own you at under $99 DV you can go direct to PSA at $12 per card. If you’re only doing say 40 cards it would be $20 per card though. You could send those 40 through a group sub like PC sportscards and they would bundle them with other cards and charge you $12 per card.

I've only graded higher-end stuff, about 40 cards, and have always done it myself.
Thinking about sending some base rookies of MPJ, Shai, Soto, JJJ etc through a service to save a bit.
Grade yourself unless you’re lazy
and unless you like taking on more risk.

Send it in with a reputable group like pcsportscards, you'll get it back faster

Hmm that does not sound logical to me and I think the exact opposite.. handing off your cards to a second party actually seems like an added risk. And let's say there are two Luka base prizms.. one comes back an 8 and the other a 10. I'm pretty sure I'll be the one who gets the 8.
and unless you like taking on more risk.

I do both. Just mixing it up diversifying. Also helps to stagger the times it can be overwhelming to list.

I've never thought about that, do you think that's how it goes? I just assumed they'd return the cards in the same order that they were shipped out? But then again they could always just switch yours out with their buddies?

The whole secret is to find someone, who knows someone, who knows someone, ...who can get you prompt service. That’s the only real advantage to using a group sub provider. Provided you meet the right people. Got it??? Ok, good... :D

I believe they submit and grade in the particular order so all of your cards should be in the same serial # sequence.
