View Full Version : I Have Noticed A Ton of New Users in 2020 Baseball Section of BO

As the title states, there have been a ton of new users on the baseball section of BO. I don't know about other sports as I don't navigate there.

Could this be all new users because of P2020, Ben Baller, Gary V?

Could this be people from different hobbies coming here solely for the "flip" and get out once their money is made?

Did the pandemic make those who used to collect now start to collect again now that they have more time at home?

Or are these all just PBM?

Or is the hobby expanding with collectors and we are welcoming more users to the blowout community?

There's been a lot of new threads by new members, some of which are bizarre like the guy who joined Target "for the cards". Seems like JJSTOCK is the only new member I've seen seem to stick around and clect (there may be more, I apologize to those).

Anyways, just an observation I've made. Anyone else notice this as well?

Yes. Tons of people in the Tatis and Robert threads had all basketball/football post history. If someone is posting about Panini it's a good bet they're new. Trout at the top was just a plain boring guy to non baseball people. Basketball is about flash. Tatis has it, Robert has it and they just so happen to be performing at the top of the league. Tatis has the marketability and wide appeal too that Acuna doesn't have(last year's top hype guy)

and they (along with the ones in the cesspool also known as the abyss or basketball section) seem to have more issues in the past 3-4 months than i have had in my long (no years needed) collecting career.

Thanks for the shoutout!

For my personal story - I rejoined the hobby because of the pandemic.

I had more time = wanted to sell my old cards from childhood. In doing so I rediscovered my love for cards.

Perhaps more importantly, I discovered a new love for different kinds of cards

Thanks again for the shoutout!

Is it ironic that the one actually named in this thread was trying to buy Tatis rookies for half price and then relentlessly argued that all Ebay completed sales were manipulated when people showed him how under market he was?

The pandemic down time had me sorting my collection. I haven't bought anything other than a very few pc items since 2011 or so. I randomly ended up buying the first 20 or so 2020 cards for the PC when they were released. After they skyrocketed, I decided to flip them for some cards of the crop of young Braves players and nicer graded versions of cards already in my PC. Then i got hooked on T206 cards and the nice community here that is relatively active in trading. Equally important, I have enjoyed the buy/sell forum as a much better experience to ebay.

A great deal of truth contained in this post. Spot on. If nothing else, Tatis is viewed as a huge investment opportunity that many don’t want to miss out on even if baseball isn’t their thing.

I have nothing to hide.

Unfortunately for you, you keep making drama but in reality, you just show some toxicity in the hobby.

For those unaware: I made a buying thread for the 2019 silver pack Tatis (beautiful card). Some people post their items "buy it now" at high prices on eBay - they're just waiting for the prices to go up.
I listed my price ~30% lower than market prices - I was waiting for prices to go down.

BBases31 proceeded to post every single day (I kid you not) ridiculing me for posting below market.

He showed listings where the card sold for 1.5x market. I pointed out that those auction sales occurred when there were buy it now listings at much lower prices (obvious manipulation).

He then accused me of "not believing eBay prices." Really??

I then showed several listings of the card selling for the $20-$30 range (only ~30% higher than my offering price). He chose to ignore them.

In general, I love this community. But this particular user was a bit toxic...

On the other hand, he did give me a lot of free bumps which was nice I guess?

Been reading BO for several years but didn't join til recently. There was no point as I was only following the non-sports section and that's just deadsville. Stopped buying non-sports in January thankfully before all of the sports stuff shot through the roof.

The Last Dance got me to pull out boxes of cards I hadn't looked at in 20+ years. In doing so, I caught the itch and have really enjoyed buying baseball cards again. It's been a lot of fun jumping back in and has taken up way more time than I ever would have anticipated :) However, with no concerts and baseball games to attend, I have had plenty free time to fill the last 6 months. I don't envision being able to shake this anytime soon. Cheers!

My quick story..
San Diego Pads fan who got interested in cards again (junk era kid) because of Tatis last season. Started buying retail in Oct 2019 (a Blaster of Prizm) and slowly built up a Tatis collection one $6 #410 at a time. I was completely overwhelmed by the new terminology, grading, brands, etc. I was able to learn about the current card market by spending hours each night tracking Tatis prices....seeing what sells and doesnt. Realized I could do some grading and selling to help supplement my Tatis PC. Started stalking BO last year to learn more and only recently felt confident enough to be a contributing member of the forums.
Bottom line: Tatis brought me back to cards...cards/$$ did not bring me to Tatis.

Not trying to get the current thread off track - 2 main users posted a lot in that thread.

Essentially they had an issue with me posting my offering buy price lower than market. Then proceeded to harass me every single day unprovoked.

Im new this week and came here via Project 2020, but I dont exactly remember how I found this forum! I think maybe the Project 2020 thread showed up in a google search for something.

Anyways, I had got back into baseball cards in an extremely casual way last year buying random retail packs, went to weekend local card show and started working on some PCs.

But I mainly like cheap crap outside of Project 2020. Like collecting Manager cards and players wearing prescription glasses and MN Twins.

This is awesome. I got back in myself last August after inheriting a cache of vintage, and it has been off to the races ever since. My wife wonders all the time what has gotten into me, I'm a 50-year old ex card fanatic who hadn't really thought about cards for 25 years or so. Frankly, the prices of packs I would see from time to time at Walmart would disgust me. I'm cheap though, so I think a gallon of gas should still be a buck.

The vintage I got brought me back in, and now I am all in. My love for the hobby picked up right where it left off in 1994. I think this place is great, every little wrinkle and corner.

Things jjstock has attempted to hide since becoming a member:

- His eBay username which was originally posted under his username, he has since changed it twice.

- Cards being bought and sold on eBay after being called out for pumping, hence the need to hide and change eBay usernames.

- After being called out, a scramble to edit old posts to hide information.

- His current location is listed as Washington. Originally it was listed as California. He is in Dublin, CA.

- His Reddit posts.

Most of this occurred in the basketball forum.

There have been a ton of new users in general, and unfortunately many of them have started some truly worthless threads early on in their tenure. I used to belong to a message board where you had to have a minimum number of posts before you could start a new thread. I wish BO would implement that policy to weed out the emotional and impulsive threads that tend to come from new members.

There has been more folks coming in from football and basketball This year it seems. Just look through the Topps Chrome and Finest Flashbacks threads and not how many times Topps Refractors are referred to as Silver. It probably came from a combination Of being priced out on Panini products And people with more time on their hands now. The odd thing is that this all happened during a long period with no baseball being played.
