That's a damn shame. He was still an amazing pitcher, and then to go all year before going under the knife, he'll miss all of next season as well. He'll be 39 in 2022 when he figures to see the mound again, have to wonder if he's going to be anywhere close to the same. But, he wouldn't be getting TJ if he didn't have every intention of pitching again, so hopefully he can be productive on the field when he makes his way back!

Or a better person.
Don't get me wrong I think Verlander is a great pitcher, but he's always come off as an AH to me.

So, any substance to that? Or just a feeling?

I would think its gonna be tough to come back at his age. Should be a 1st ballot HOF'er

He could be the nicest guy in the world in person for all I know, but I'm just going by his public statements and such. He has a holier than thou morale attitude on twitter yet was fine with winning a WS with the Astros, fine with bringing in Osuna to be their closer.

What a shame and his contract with Houston would be up after next season so might not see him pitch for them ever again. Well at least he got/help Houston get a world series in his time with them.

Cmon. I hate the Astros and what they did as much as anyone, but this is one of the best pitchers of the generation. Cheering on an injury and longterm surgery just isn't the way to go here.

At what point does the guy just say "the heck with it" and calls it a career, stays home with his wife and help to raise his kid. It seems to me that at his age this may be the best option. I cannot imagine trying to make a comeback at the age of 39.

Agreed, time to walk away. His wife is nine years younger and smoking hot! Time to make some more JustinV Jr's :-)

You think if he wants to play, he would only accept being a starter? You think if he became a closer, he could be useful despite his age and coming back from tjs/not pitching for 2 years?

I think this is it for him. He may try to comeback but it may be hard for him to play if he doesn't feel dominate. Always a fan. First ballot HOFer for sure. You could tell he was going to be a HOFer from the start. Some guys just have "It" and carry themselves different.

Nope, I think Verlander will do whatever is asked of him with his preference being a starter. I am saying that, at an age when most players are retiring does he really want to set his career back two years and go through the pain and agony of rehabilitation at this point? Is the surgery worth the price? This is a question only JV can answer at this point but if it was me, I would take my money, stay home with my supermodel wife and enjoy the fruits of my labor as I await an eventual hall of fame induction.

Has openly bashed others for cheating but he was "shockingly" quiet about the Astros cheating their way to a WS title.

He has 33million reasons a year to not retire.

I just re read is instragram post and he wrote that he feels
with proper rehab and unwavering commitment to surgery, it will lengthen his career and not shorten it. Also in his video message, looks like he still has some goals he wants to cross off. So looks like he wants to keep playing but then again, maybe his comments were spur of the moment. Maybe he sits down with his wife and he thinks things over.

Don't know many teams that will want to take a chance on a 39 year old pitcher by 2022 who won't have pitched in 1 1/2 years coming off TJ surgery.

I said the organization. Not the player.
He may be a jerk, but I don’t wish injury on him. But the ASStros.......they can choke on the money they owe him.

HOF 2026, correct?
His contract ends after the 2021 season, and he will likely be out the entire 2021 season attempting to rehab from surgery. Even if he recovers quickly and may be an option in Sep/Oct 2021, I could see the Astros holding him out and letting insurance cover a substantial amount of the 2021 salary.

True but perhaps if he wants to cross off some of his goals and also wants to play for the love of the game, maybe he takes a discount which might be easier for some teams to take a chance at him. Or maybe a team that's looking to get fans into the seats just goes after him because of his name, even if he past his prime(and yes, since he's a pitcher, won't play majority of the schedule but still...) or a young up and coming team that needs a veteran but if the choice was between not playing or playing for a bad team which would he choose?
