View Full Version : What the hell is going on w/ Iverson pricing?

I don't want to be accused of trying to pump Iverson cards. I PC him and he's my favorite all time player but I have zero interest in selling anything.
I just wanted to get that out of the way because I've posted something similar in the past and got accused of being a pumper.
Anyway, wtf? I'm seeing his Topps base rookie in a PSA 9 listed for ~$400. Same with a lot of his other more common cards like the "basketball texture" Upper Deck which could be had in a PSA 9 for like $50 a couple of months ago.
So what changed? I'm personally upset because now I'm being priced out of the Iverson collecting game just like I have been priced out of any wax from 19-20.
I'm also kicking myself. Iverson rookie refractors from Finest and Bowman could be had for $350 a few months ago -- they've since tripled in price.
Dont see a price increase?
A 2012 BGS 9.5 Silver Prizm sold for $350+ and a Finest RC Refractor PSA 9 with coating has been sitting there untouched for months now.

Don't worry mate listed does not = sell price. I think you can pick up a topps psa 9 for something like $80. Sure they're going up but nothing insane. Also his stuff leveled off and is just super steady in many areas. Like you I'll never sell AI so don't worry about it man there's still stuff to buy. Topps Chrome is probably only going up long term we all kinda knew that already and rookie refactors may be the same IDK about that but I picked up a 2001 Topps Chrome refractor with the nice blue from his MVP season for like $40 the other day. Still plenty of good PC stuff to be had. The issue with AI cards going up is they can't dip much because he has so many collector's. I did overpay on a stardate rookie recently but it's a nice card.
Also I think some stuff has actually leveled off/gone down a bit since a few weeks ago just following the general market.

Really weird pump attempt again. As someone that PC's Iverson, you don't know the difference between Topps and Topps Chrome?

That refractor is the sterling one, I like it personally but I think a lot of people see it as #3 behind the gold refractor and the series 1 base refractor.
Topps went up big during the recent base pump but has come down.

Aren't PSA 9's selling for like $70 now? Where are you getting $400 from?
“listed for $400”
Im guessing its either the Chrome or NBA @50 Foil version

No, it's not. I think people are just posting things w/ hail mary pricing in the hopes someone will actually think that's the going rate. But there's a LOT of this. Ebay "Allen Iverson Rookie" and toggle on PSA/BGS and then sort by price, high to low. After you get past the first page there's a ton of overpriced stuff.
Actually, here you go: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=allen+iverson+rookie+&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&Professional%2520Grader=Professional%2520Sports%2520%2528PSA%2529%7CBeckett%2520%2528BGS%2529&_sop=16&Grade=9%252E5%7C10%7C9%7C8%252E5&_dcat=214&_pgn=2
I see a Topps Base PSA 10 for $1,100.
Two base finest rookie PSA 10's for about the same.
Two foil rookie 9.5's for $1k as well.
Two metal rookies for $850 and $1k.
My point is that I'm seeing so many of these BIN prices that it's confusing me.
And to the guy who said this is "another weird pump attempt", I don't know what to tell you if the intro I literally wrote at the beginning of my post wasn't enough.
I don't even really sell cards. I should, to make room for more AI stuff and 90's inserts for my PC. My entire purpose for this post is that I'm frustrated that things are suddenly so expensive for my PC guy. You must be fairly conspiratorially minded.
Thanks to everyone else.

Looking at the above link, it actually seems like two Topps base rookie PSA 10's sold for $796 and $790, both on August 25th ....whereas a Topps Chrome BGS 9.5 sold for $795 on August 12th. What am I missing here?
Your initial post said a Topps Base rookie PSA 9.
Dont come in with PSA 10 listings.

Man, you guys are a tough crowd. I don't really know what I can say otherwise to convince you that I'm not trying to pump. But I can try again:
I'm not selling anything. I PC Iverson and none of my current collection is for sale.
I'm frustrated with the price hike. I'd love to see his PSA9 finest rookie refractors back under $300.
I was just curious what the deal was but being called a pumper a bunch of times despite pointing out that's not my intent is pretty lame.
Isn't my Ebay linked here? Go take a look. I've never even sold anything lmao.

Your search is too complicated. I didn't know people actually used the filters for PSA/BGS and grades lol.
A simple search for "allen iverson topps psa 9 rc" gets you many results below $100.
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313&_nkw=allen+iverson+topps+psa+9+rc&_sacat=0
After further review, a better question would be "Why the hell are Iverson Topps crappy paper PSA 9 RC the same price or more than the Topps Finest PSA 9 RC?" Man, the idiots really got bamboozled by the Kobe pump n dump.

Except they don't account for people that aren't professional sellers and don't list using all the filters..

you know a good pump thread when you hear "this isnt a pump thread but", I PC.
Also what do you mean by this?
"I'm not selling anything. I PC Iverson and none of my current collection is for sale."
So your old collection is for sale? but nothing is for sale?
I am bamboozled

a lot of the pump threads backfire, at least with those of us who've been in the hobby for more than a minute.

Quite simply put, (as I’m sure you should know the ANSWER) the card market and particularly the basketball card market has been on the rise for quite sometime now, so it’s only natural for HOF vets to follow suit. It’s clear to see and should have been known before asking such rhetorical questions.
Again, as someone pointed out, Sold Listings is where the data is at.

This is the pinnacle of stupidity.
As I said in another response -- check my ebay, it's linked to my account. I've never sold anything lmfao. I'm not here to pump value of anything. I'm frustrated that I've been priced out.
Yeah I made a few threads because I was looking for actual opinions and just received low-effort "her-dur it's a pump thread!" responses.
Sucks past "pump threads" have made some of you so paranoid that you're unwilling to help a genuine PC collector who's fairly new to this whole thing understand the market.

....is your reading comprehension that poor?
"I'm not selling anything" = I'm not selling anything.
"I PC Iverson and none of my current collection is for sale" = I have a personal collection of Allen Iverson cards and none of them are for sale.
"Current collection" = everything I have at present.

yeah i love that one. I started really ballooning in price 4 months ago or so. I'm mad I missed the boat on it also. I have basically every single base rookie *except* that one (and topps chrome but that's my next purchase)

Why do you care about the prices of cards you should already have? I don’t know many collectors that stack psa unnumbered base rookies...
Not sure how long you’ve collected Iverson, but if it’s been over 12 months these are cards you should already own. Cheap and iconic are the first ones you knock off the wantlist usually
I would imagine this is one reason people aren’t trusting your motives

If you are an Iverson super-collector, you must have a decent collection "as is" and you should maybe look at it in positive light.
Would you rather have your cards down down in value and become relegated to a fraction of what you paid and have Iverson share space with Maubury, Hardaway, Larry Johnson, Shawn Kemp and others?
Or are you blessed by having a collection that's gone up, sustaining if not growing and can cash out at a positive profit?
Getting "priced out" is not a bad thing at all. When is having enough, finally enough? I'd love to get priced out if it meant my portfolio is robust.
Think about it in stock market terms. I just bought 1,000 shares of Apple at $100 ten years ago. Oh man, it's now worth $400 a share, darn it. I wish it were worth $100 or less, so I could buy more shares! Dratz !!! :)
The hobby, and I get it, for many it's a hobby not an investment, is awesome when it thrives as it is. You may in fact consider getting off the bus and dumping some of the mediocre cards and focus on a Top 20 collection of the very best or your favorites to then fund buying the ones you're missing that you really want.
I tend to look at irrational price surges on stuff I own as a positive.

Maybe i misspoke somewhere along the way. I'm not a super collector. Not even close. I've been in the hobby a couple of years now after being obsessed with it as a kid in the 90's. I have a lot of AI stuff but nothing crazy at all.

Maybe it's stupid, but I like buying graded stuff when it comes to old cards. I like the look of the slabs, I like the protection, I like knowing what I'm getting.

It very well might be --- but I still like the looks of it and the protection it provides. Grading is part of what brought me back into the hobby, so I'm thankful for that.
