View Full Version : Do the Flawless base diamond cards matter anymore?

I know the key rookies will still get pretty nice prices but they get dwarfed by the different parallels of Prizm, Optic and Select (now Mosaic as well).
For example, a BGS 9 Blue Prizm of Doncic numbered to 199 got $6,700+ at auction in July. In March (granted, before the price surge), a BGS 9.5 Flawless doubled diamond of Doncic numbered to 10 got a shade under $4K (a similar one got a little over $6.1K in February).
Based on print run and price per box (even with inflated Prizm prices), the values don't match up.
Do you guys see anything changing that or has that ship long since sailed?

not sure if this applies in this current scenario but i might be wrong lol. As far as your question OP i personally believe that that ship has sailed barring something completely unforeseen.

The thought randomly popped into my head today. I think NT base cards barely sell for less than Flawless base diamonds at this point. That's wild to me.
The base diamonds used to be a really big deal and they seem to be becoming an afterthought. How long do we think Panini will keep running them out there in Flawless?

Never follow trends. See them before they happen. If you have a feeling about these diamond base, go with it. There are only /20 of them, right? Only a select few in the early 2010's would have believed Prizm-type cards would take over the hobby and no one would care about a patch or auto.

Good thought, I'm of the same camp. Probably one of the best buys on the market right now considering scarcity, highest end product, only true RC in that product....Create your own thesis. My gut tells me buy this long term. These are market dislocations that I like, but may take time to materialize.

A 2017/18 Lebron (Cavs uni) just went for 620 at auction. I agree with some earlier posts that butting these up, especially of High End players and rookies, can be pretty good long term investments. Gotta imagine what’s in circulation is what you’ll get with how expensive breaking previous years has become.

That's the beauty of having so much to choose from. Buy what you like. The 2012 Diamonds are a nice card. LeBrons were $1k out the gate. I doubt that has changed.

I always thought the diamond base cards were gimmicky and ugly, I much prefer to collect the base cards from Exquisite, NT and Immaculate.

I totally agree with this. I can’t speak for the recent flawless diamonds (although the key ones in any given year still seem to sell for a ton of $$$; NT base /99 are nowhere near as far as I can tell), but the 2012 version seems to sell really well. And I’ve been keeping an eye out for the premium players like Kobe, lebron, Durant, steph, (even harden) etc. for awhile and those cards just never seem to come up. Even the better rookies barely seem to come up except for just-for-show BINs. And there’s just no point in trying to find the emeralds...

Well, they would definitely get more attention if there wasn't so much speculation about whether the diamonds are even real. I have a Chris paul collegiate flawless (not worth nearly as much ofc), but there are videos on Instagram and other platforms that show some diamonds inserted in the cards aren't REALLY diamonds.

2012-14 were all great designs for Flawless base. Then they totally redesigned them and by 2016 the base were /25 and they no longer used holofoil - just a dull silver foil.
Even post-2015 Flawless diamond Lebron's are 1k now, so yes, the prices have changed. The Lebron mentioned earlier in the thread was a ruby /15 for $620; a diamond goes for more.

I pulled 2013 diamond Lebron and Curry out of a case, probably shouldn't have traded them away!

Obviously I'm a fan.
I think pointing at Prizms trumped up prices and comparing is tricky. The problem will be down the line trying to find them. Base Vets or Base Rookies. They almost NEVER come up.
So I think serious PC collectors will covet these.
A 2012 Bron would be $2k plus I'm sure of it. Maybe a lot more.
They have definitely slipped as the years have gone on. I think 15/16 is also really nice. I only search the first 4 years.
Until recently I hadn't seen a 2012 TD for 3 years. 495695495697

I collect the flawless base rookies of my preferred team. I'm not that interested in vet base cards unless I really like the team that year (e.g. championship year).
I find them really affordable compared to the nat RPA. And similar in price to immaculate RPA.
For rookie cards, I am turned off my the endless parallels of prizms and grading craze. For a vet, I might prefer a certain prizm parallel over the flawless

Those 2012 Duncan flawless cards are awesome...definitely haven’t seen many of them. Actually all of those Spurs flawless cards are sweet...

They're tough to find but they don't seem that coveted either. $2K for a 2012 LeBron seems like a bargain when even Green Prizm from that year would probably fetch quite a bit more.

Not my favorite cards, but far from my least favorite. I’d much rather have a base RC /20 or whatever over a pick cracked ice mojo sparkle fart Prizm parallel.

Well seeing as I haven't seen a Steph or Bron for years I would say yes, they are coveted. They are not even being shown off.
$2k is me having wishful thinking that I can still get one. I'm in a fantasy land.
Again, Prizm prices are so out of this world that people will start to look at other options. Flawless, Immac, NT etc and even Certified. A Bron Green /5 sold for $500 ish if I remember.
Comparing to Prizm makes little sense when it comes to values as it has been hyped and pumped to an all time high.

Ok. You made me do it. Here's mine.
drobfan8, you're right, 2k wouldn't do it, in my opinion. I tried to buy a raw Kobe for 4k and the guy turned me down.

Whoa that’s nice. Really love the inaugural 2012 cards, and always awesome to get a sighting of the big boys like lebron...

I have seen 3 2012 Big O diamond base cards on Ebay recently. A graded one outsold the other 2 by over $200. I kept mine in the original magnetic. Is that not a thing anymore?

Yeah I’m curious about this too. I have left the ones I own in the original uncirculated and sealed magnetics, and that’s the way I would prefer to obtain them as a buyer - but I’m also someone who has never graded a card and has no desire to do so. I’ve always wondered how others view this aspect as it pertains to a flawless diamond’s desirability.

Last Zion auction went for $3,700. If it was a Prizm numbered to /20 it'd be close to six figures.
