View Full Version : Am I the Only One Not Convinced that All of Cam Newton's Autos are Legit?

The Tua auto inconsistency thread reminded me of how weird Cam Newton's rookie autos were. I am still not convinced that all of his 2011 autos are legitimate. Below is my case. *Please note that I fully understand that I maybe way off here and deserving of a classic blowout shaming. I am a Cam Newton fan and truly want nothing but the best for the guy. I do not own a Cam auto, although I was lucky enough to pull a few in 2011.*

To begin I spent time on ebay and worthpoint combing over countless Steiner/JSA examples of Cam autos. The earlier the better if possible. Here is a small sample of what I believe to be genuine Cam autographs. Please note how each appears to be written by someone without hesitation. Also and more importantly, how each autograph ends. Notice how the end of the "T" continues straight without a sudden change of direction.

Let us get into cards. This is where is all gets very strange. I began examining the cards released earliest in the season. Various Press Pass/Leaf/Upper Deck offerings were first in the 2011 product lineup. This is the first appearance of Cam autos that end with the "T" swooping back up and through itself. Please note that I have never seen an authenticated Cam auto to offer this swoop through the "T". I have also never seen and authentic IP Cam auto to use the "C. Newton", always the blockier style autos from the collage above. This man has signed more items than one can imagine, so why never in this fashion? Also please note how awful and offensive the Press Pass autos are. As if someone was studying his auto and trying it for the first time on the cards.

Moving on to the only product that causes me to question everything even further. 2011 Topps Rising Rookies offers basically every possible style of Newton auto into one product. I did not bother displaying the questionable sticker autos from this product. My question being once again why so different? I believe the top 2 to be authentic. The left copy with the #2 reminds me most of early Cam autos. Also please compare the #2 from the Rising Rookies example to the UD Sticker auto above.

Back to the "C. Newton" sticker autos. But, But Cam signed the sticker autos differently because of the limited space offered by the sticker. Feel free to explain how a few of the early releases magically had what appear to be authentic Cam sticker autos. Also the Sweet Spot card would have been a prime candidate to use the "C. Newton" auto no? Please notice how different the sticker autos are in pic #2.

So which Cam autos are we confident in? The ones that share an appearance to his known early IP autos would be my recommendation. However, after looking at enough of them I began to question those as well. Haha.

In conclusion, Thank you for taking the time to learn about Cam autos with me. I hope that we can all agree that this is unusual. If I am the only one, I will most certainly show myself the door. Have a great day!

Seem fine to me.

The early ones are consistent with each other and the later ones all have similarities.

I officially now doubt all of them that have the loop back to the "T". None authenticated that I see in a cursory search and doesn't make sense for bulk autos. His natural line ending would make for quicker, smoother strokes. I do agree however that some of them that share that style do look too "forced" or drawn rather than signed.

I think most look very similar, but as foleylion08 said, the C. Newt ones (with the loop back to the T) look totally different. As far as looking forced, I also agree, but that may be just trying to fit the autograph into the space on the first few stickers. Some of the stuff on memorabilia could be in person too, vs at a paid event. Those are also going to look different. As was said in the Tua Auto thread, how does anyone know what is real or fake any more (meaning the certification companies)? I just won't buy autographs unless I'm there to see them, or have them done through a trusted company (Denver Autographs is local and very reputable).

The early ones required the pen to come off the card 7 times(roughly), the latter ones only twice, without the number. I'm only seeing two signatures. I'm not counting the helmets that have a rounded surface

Thanks for the further input everyone. I was hoping to learn quite a bit more myself as I am not an autograph expert.
