Hey all,

Why do these Trae Young Certified Autos sell for much cheaper ($180-$190) than the rest of his on card autos ($300+)?

I’ve noticed this trend for other RC autos (Doncic, Ayton,..) for the certified run.

Greatly appreciate the input, thanks guys!

certified is sort of a $hitty cheap brand, it correlates into the box pricing/secondary market pricing. great that its on card vs sticker, but people would often rather spend the money on a nicer set.

Thanks mate! Appreciate the response, didn’t know certified was viewed in that light

yeah to be honest I've only ever searched for Certified like 3 times in my life and it was for the Zion graffiti cards

Very underrated, have both Rookie Roll Call and Certified Potential Trae auto's from that set.

That is a sharp rookie auto. Not sure I understand the hate.

Lol it’s not hate, it’s popularity.

There are plenty of lower end sets. Everybody will have different preferences, Im not big on Certified, I prefer Elite for sets in that same-ish tier.

It’s not a bad thing though, it gives you an opportunity to get certain players at a cheaper price point than some of the other alternatives.

In due time some of these sets will become more popular than they are currently. That’s the fun part.

Plus the fact that its an insert set and not a true rc auto also plays into that.

Yup, that compounded on top too.

I think people don't like the design. Just having a head shot of the player makes it feel a little bit close to an unlicensed product.

I do think that people should be valuing early examples of a player's autograph more. Would much rather have a full signature compared to "TY."

I might be alone in this, but I see the rookie roll call as the (very) poor man's next day auto.

Definitely worth analyzing. So some thoughts:

1. Let's be clear what a reasonable description of this "hate" is. It's essentially enthusiastic snobbery developed while being in a hobby where you can't collect everything. It's a way of fending off FOMO. It's not a deep, visceral cruelty.

2. It's something that burns particularly brightly against failed high brow/premium works. More than just a hobby thing. Whenever someone tries to get fancier than they need to to complete a task, and they end up screwing something up, we feel a sense of righteous irritation that we often don't when we see a novice make a mistake.

It may not be clear from a 2021 vantage point, but Certified was originally a super-premium brand. Originally marketed as "Select Certified", it was designed and marketed to be more premium than Select was, which is not how the 2010s vintages of these brands have been seen.

I'd argue that a name like "Certified" becomes a clear cut liability when it's not being applied to something that can be thought of as extremely special. If "Panini Certified" (or "Panini Totally Certified") doesn't actually mean that this is some of the most special stuff Panini is making, then what the hell does it mean?

Nothing, and that's likely hurting brand perception.

3. I feel like the Certified brand though might actually be getting some positive momentum though. Over the course of pandemic era in the hobby, there's been a trend of the market essentially concentrating on one "undervalued" thing after another, and it kind of seems to me like Certified's longevity in basketball at this time is going to make it gain acceptance over time. That all goes out the window if Panini stops making Certified, but consider the list of Panini products that have occurred in the most years as a stand alone product during their ownership of the hobby:

Certified 11
National Treasures 11
Stickers 11
Hoops 10
Absolute 9
Court Kings 9
Prizm 9
Select 9
Donruss 8
Flawless 8
Immaculate 8
Prestige 8
Spectra 8
Threads 8
Contenders 7
Gold Standard 7
Noir 7

Frankly, I think any brand on this list that's still its own product it's in pretty decent shape (presuming basketball cards remain enough of a thing), but it's really something to consider that Certified (with or without the "Totally") has been one of the 3 mainstays for Panini along with Stickers and National Treasures which are both iconic.

Totally under rated on card auto. Buy what you like, not what people think they should like……you’ll be much happier with your collection. And you won’t be loaded up on PSA 9 base cards
