I know this as been discussed ad naseum, but my question is related to a specific card.

This appears to be a very nice example of a psa 10 Chrome Refractor Kobe

My very limited experience studying the greening chromes is that SOMETIMES in the right light, the greening actually adds a certain "brightening" appearance to the card...

Does this card have the appearance of greening or trending towards greening?

In my humble opinion - yes it's got some greening. Kobe's skin. Compare his hands to his elbows...completely different colors.

That card is heavily greened.

Yeah, stay away. That thing has more greening than most.

Didn't the last one of these go over $100K?

He's definitely in the process of turning into the Hulk on that card

That card has greening, it is not "starting" to green.

I will still maintain that greening for these cards is a matter of WHEN, not IF. Yes, I know some people will have strong opinions to the contrary.

If greening is a deal breaker, then stay away.

This is still a PSA 10 REFRACTOR. If you want it and can afford it, there are only 63 copies as of today.

I hate being so naive in this area and appreciate your insights

So even encased BEFORE any greening, they will go green eventually?

Does that only apply to refractors or base too?

That’s the worst I have ever seen in regards to greening. There are still copies in the wild that have not turned green. That PSA 10 is now probably a 8 unfortunately or worse the surface grade would be murder now. My PSA 9 still has no greening and puts that 10 to shame. I will post a picture for reference.

Hellcat, if I could ever own a card like yours, I would probably end my collection right then.

To the OP, I am not sure about PSA factoring in greening when they grade this particular set. Others can chime in, but I was under the impression that greening was not a significant ding for this set. I only buy already graded cards, and Of course, what you are considering is also already graded.

But ultimately it goes green too at some point and then that means it’s a 7 or 8 as well??

Seems like they flat out can’t count against the greening if it’s inevitable

Greening does not count against the grade.

From what I've seen, Topps Chromes in older slabs are your best shot at finding one that isn't greening or has very little.

This Kobe base has barely any greening.

We dont know if it was slabbed before it started greening.:)!

Until every Kobe chrome base and refractor goes green we don’t know the answer to the question. We’re close too 25 years in and mine along with others have yet greened. Someone should actually call PSA and ask them how they’re handling the matter it does get brought up a lot on the forum. I do know the pristine colored Kobe’s bring a premium and rightfully so.

I’ve heard the opposite how can the graders let it slide??? On top of it it looks so bad! I have 2 base Kobe Chromes off centered one greening the other still holding strong.

For the Kobe TC rookie, I always use Cherokee Parks' (or whoever that is) lower leg/calf to check the greening because it seems to show up there first. Or at least earlier than other spots on the card.

What is the last year that chrome was susceptible to greening? Not sure I’ve ever seen greening in 98 or later.

They fixed it for the most part by 1998. However, if you just set the card in the sun all day, that's another story.
