View Full Version : This is a new level, even for Walmart

I just got back from a Walmart run with the wife and kid. I know, bad on me for deciding to go on Christmas Eve, but they wanted a Gingerbread House, so off we went.

While they were looking to find them, which they never did, I went to fight the lines to check the card aisle. I knew there would be nothing as there is a group of ten guys that go to every retail outlet within 50 miles. I know this only because one of them goes to the LCS and brags about it.

Anyways, I make it up to the aisle and see nothing. Completely empty, as expected. There was a guy standing in the aisle, kind of twitchy like, no cart, nothing to checkout and pay for, just standing there. I was dumb and made eye contact, so naturally he walks over. Here’s what happened next:

DISCLAIMER: this event actually happened today, however I spiced up the statements made a little to be funnier. However, this did happen just with a slightly different conversation.

“Whatchu need?”

“Me? Nothing, I was just seeing if they had any cards, Happy Holidays.” I then try to leave.

“I gotchu, whatchu want?”

“Excuse me? Really, I was just looking for sports cards, thanks.”

“Nah man, I got whatever you need. You want baseball? I got Update, Chrome and Prizm. You want football? I got Prizm and Donruss. You want basketball I got Premier Hoops, and Mosaic.”

“Seriously? No I’m good, thanks”

“Hey man, $50 a box, buy 5 for $225. Help me out, I gotta buy gifts too.”

I just shook my head and walked away. At first I seriously thought he wanted to sell me drugs, lol! I can’t take this anymore.

I half expect to see shady neck bearded middle aged me on the street corners soon. Just couldn’t believe he was trying to peddle Walmart products to Walmart customers inside Walmart for more than 2x MSRP.

Sad thing is I think I would love to have a blaster of Absolute right about now. In 2018, even with Lamar as hot as he was, I wouldn’t buy the last blaster of Absolute when it was on clearance!

Man how times have changed.

Yep, I couldn’t believe it. There wasn’t an employee in sight for me to put the guy to, and eventually my wife texted saying they were leaving and I had the car keys so I had to leave.

There was a group doing this at Meijers and they put up a sign saying no loitering or you will be asked to leave the store.
Would be cool to see someone kicked out, but would I then be loitering watching him get kicked out??

That is awesome. Love this guys Christmas spirit. He was trying to hook you up. Don't be a grinch next time. Go out back and climb into his van and see what his inventory looks like. Maybe he will trade you a blaster for an 8 ball.

Pretty wild as I've never encountered this in all my trips in the wild. It does make perfect sense, though. You know that's where people are going to show up wanting cards and will be disappointed seeing the empty shelves.

I guess so, it still seems pretty ballsy to me knowing that at any point an employee could walk up. I guess it really doesn’t matter though as there probably isn’t much an employee could do.

I think it is selling just fine. This guy just probably wanted a bunch of cash and thought he could move it quick and thought he could take advantage of last minute shoppers.

This 100% didn’t happen

Believe it if you want to, or don’t if you don’t want to. It really impacts me none. Not really sure what the end game is to making up a story like this.

The only thing I did was spice up the conversation a little to make it funnier, but the interaction absolutely happened, and he absolutely offered to sell me the products I stated for the price I stated.

Again, not really sure what I gain by lying about this.....

What is hard to believe about this story? This would be something I would actually expect from a Walmart shopping experience. This happened to me many years with a Furby at Toys R Us. They were sold out, but the guy most have bought dozens. He was trying to sell them to people for $200 and I saw someone leave the store with him to purchase one. Flippers would absolutely do this.

I remember the original Furby craze from the late 90s, that was one of the biggest hottest toys ever at that point.

I also remember fiat fights over Tickle Me Elmo, sales of those going through the roof and flippers standing in parking lots outside of stores pestering customers to buy their toys.

Back when the original Wii came out, I found one in a store in the mall and bought it even though I really didn’t want it, the hype got me. Someone saw me buy it, asked me if I would sell it to them for a little more than what I paid. He was at least courteous when I said no.

My only responses other than just shaking my head no would've been after he said "Help me out, I gotta buy gifts too.”

First response: I mean, maybe you should've bought gifts with the money you spent hoarding retail blasters?

Follow-up response: I'll tell you what...if you're really needing money for gifts, I'll give you $7 per blaster.

That would have been great, I’m not really someone to ever confront people about stuff. I prefer to just be pleasant and polite, but at least in my mind I would say stuff like this to them.

In all honesty, there's really no way I would've been able to react quickly with that response because I would've been completely caught off guard like you probably were. I always think of good responses after the fact...haha.

Smart move...

They are avoiding eBay and PayPal fees. Transactions are in cash so IRS can’t track them. You can’t open a dispute with them and demand refunds if you open up junk.

These guys are financial geniuses, I need to find these guys on IG.

I’ve asked flippers if they have stuff on them for sale, out of genuine interest. (When Topps chrome was maybe 50% higher than msrp on eBay, I was trying to see if people would take smaller margins cash money wise )

Too my surprise they almost always said that they didn’t have anything at all On them .
