One more card for today. So I decided a while back my main PC would be Heiskanen - as in, I'm going to be in on pretty much any low #'ed Heiskanen card that I like or that is a good value. But I'm a lifelong Stars fan - the kind of guy that actually doesn't follow the NHL crazy closely except for my team, but I watch every Stars game. So I have a few different auto sets that I collect all the Stars players for, which you'll see here over time, and I'm willing to buy some nifty other cards that come up.

The 2018-19 Alexander Radulov Ultimate Shield Auto came up for auction last week and I had to pass for budget, but I had just got this 1/1 the week before that I couldn't pass on. For whatever reason, Diamond Relic 1/1s just hit the spot for me, and while Modano appears in some legend sets still, it's not THAT likely he's going to get another one like this anytime soon. My mom is also a big Stars fan, and Modano was always her favorite, so there's some additional sentiment for cool Modano cards for me.

The Ice RPA was a card I went back and forth on. It was an update release in 2019 Ice, and two sold this summer. I really wasn't into it at that price point, but it did grow on me, and it's great in person. Waiting cost me $125 though versus having just bought one earlier this year.

My mixed feelings on sports grading

So I got a YG Rainbow Speckle. It definitely has some 10 potential to my slightly trained eyes, so I subbed it to PSA (standard through PCsportscards.) And I hate it.

I really just don't like PSA slabs. The frosted plastic is not attractive to my eyes at all and I don't like the feel of them. I have zero slabbed hockey cards ATM, but if I had any for my PC, I would much rather have BGS slabs. When CGC opens up their sports card grading, I will probably sub some stuff to them - I have a Pokemon PC also, and I'm buying almost exclusively cards in CGC slabs for it.

But....

I have to live in the real world also. If a card can be a PSA 10, that's going to be by far the most cost efficient versus value gained thing to do. I was already about to send in a big PSA order to PCsportscards, so adding one card is nothing. BGS w/ subs on anything that doesn't take a decade is $100, and that just seems ridiculous when I could easily be wrong and have the card come back as a BGS 9, where I wouldn't make any money after the grading fees.

So I'm going to wind up with a really cool PC card in a slab I don't like. If it does come back a 10, I will probably wind up selling it at some point if I can secure a replacement. If it comes back a 9, I will probably cross it to CGC eventually, even though it's setting money on fire.

Mail day today. The Jere Lehitnen card isn't expensive - I paid like $15 for it - but it's his first Upper Deck auto. The only auto of his I had before this was an old BAP sticker auto. He signed a few on card autos for them also, but they're always black on silver and just messy/hard to read. A top tier Hall of Very Good player and a key cog on all the Stars successful teams in the late 90s and 2000s, really glad to get a nice looking, modern auto of his. And yes, the old autos looked just as messy as this one does.

Klingberg autos are also fun - his J is always the same, but the way he signs the rest is a crapshoot. The crapshoots are similar enough that it's clear the same person is always doing it, though.

It might be my new favorite card in the collection. The color scheme just works perfectly for Dallas and the green in the photo and the patch. My final bid on it was actually several hundred dollars north of what I got it for, thank goodness.

Most of these I acquired back in the summer.

I missed on a couple of other big cards in the last few days - largely because, for this PC, I don't value graded cards particularly highly. Most of the really cool cards are thick cards that are difficult to grade highly. If I can't have most/all graded cards, I really just don't care if I don't have any and I'm not willing to pay a premium for them. This is particularly true for PSA slabs, because I just don't like them very much. My Pokemon PC, however, is centered around slabbed cards, mostly CGC slabs.

Time for the only true 1 of 1 Heiskanen card I have at the moment. It's not a rookie, and it's a sticker auto, but it was my first and it's an idiosyncratic card that I'm very fond of.

I think this card has some really cool features -

1) It's a gold/superfractor style 1/1, so it's pretty clear it's a 1/1 from the front.
2) It's a stick auto, but the design is well done so it's not ugly about it.
3) Only the 1/1s of this are autos - so this is the only Heiskanen auto in all of 19-20 Allure.
4) It's a die cut! I'm not sure that there are any other Heiskanen die cut 1/1s right now.

2019-20 SPA - Other Stars Auto

Not going to lie - I'm in love with this set. I think the design is just so clean and attractive. The vet patch autos are some of the best I've seen - I prefer them to most of the The Cup/Ultimate/Premier vet patch autos.

This is all of the black/gold parallels besides the Pavelski SOTT (which is #ed to 25 and I've only seen 2 or 3 of on Ebay) and Pavelski base. Pavelski and Bishop were in a TON of products last year, so I'm pretty choosy about picking up more of their autos, but I will definitely get the blacks I'm missing here if the prices aren't insane.

There's also an inscription parallel of the Heiskanen SOTT Draft #ed to 10, but the inscription parallels are the part of SPA I don't tend to like because the inscriptions are usually weak. That's why I like the inscriptions on the SOTT blacks this year so much, because they're actually cool nicknames and not just dates. (Radulov has always been mercurial.)

Some people would probably find this insane, but the 1/1 Pure Black Double Diamond 2018 BD Heiskanen is probably the card I want the most for my Heiskanen PC - that or the FW Patch Auto Black (presumed 1/1, although only labeled as such starting in 2019.)

I’ve had most of these since the summer. This is the last of my RPAs and other cards I’ve kept in one touches. There a bunch of assorted autos I need to post sometime too.

The Nameplates are the only patch cards that really interest me - these are actually two of my three initials, which is pretty cool. I also love the Signature Shots blue - never seen a different auto card in electric blue besides that parallel.

Svech has several cards in Cup but honestly very little hitting ebay. And the very few I saw had condition issues beyond my comfortability for raw PC. Didn't see much from Svech for Clear Cut. Definitely understand the budget busting rules. My 2021 allocations are much tighter than previous years. Just being super selective.

I just chose early on to not be overly condition sensitive on these cards. My assumption is that I'll never be able to resell them for close to what I'm paying for them. I am somewhat picky about patches now - I don't really like patches that don't have any green in them and won't pay nearly as much for them now.

There will be a new champion for most expensive card in the PC here in a few days. Probably the most massive card possible outside of actual 1/1s. Plus a few other cool Clear Cut/Cup autos and a more normal important card that isn't my real cup of tea, but that I had to pull the trigger on.

So obviously this card is awesome. It's a green Stars card - probably the most expensive one that exists currently. Also, since the Cup 1/1 parallels are a non-auto shield and a non-shield auto, this is the lowest #'ed parallel of the Cup RPA IMO and completes my set. It's also a ridiculously fat card - the first true 360pt card I've ever seen.

But I also want to use this to talk about the overall Heiskanen market and wonder how broad some trends are. This is no secret because you can look it up - I paid $1,125 for this card at auction. There was a 2019-20 vet /3 green button auto parallel that closed four days earlier. When they were both at auction, I assumed I'd wind up with both - but the 2019 version actually wound up selling for nearly $600.

This honestly makes no sense to me. There are 16-17 and 18-19 Tyler Seguin /3 button auto parallels hanging out on EBay for $200 - the 16-17 listing has been hanging out for years. Obviously they are different players, and Seguin has been having some injury problems, but this seems super out of line to me. Heiskanen FWAs are going for more than Seguin - and the fact that Seguin isn't on his draft team might play into it - but it's the difference of $55 vs $80, not some big multiple. And other Heiskanen 2nd year cards are pretty insane right now also. A /3 Clear Cut Embedded Endorsements orange parallel went for over $300 also. Other Cup/Clear Cut cards from this year are at insane prices versus what rookie stuff is going for also.

My assumption right now is two things -

1) There's a lot of excitement over these last couple of products, especially since there may not be any big auto products for 5-6 months.
2) I'm running into 1-2 other whales that are willing to spend whatever to buy unique pieces.

It's just so weird, because I really would have expected this card to go for a LOT more if #2 is true. And there was a BGS 9 High Gloss YG that went for $970 in the Feb PWCC auction - I assumed it was going to go for a lot more so I wasn't paying attention to it, but I would have at least bid it up some more.

But this card is awesome. It may very well wind up being the peak of the collection, depending on when a couple of the rookie 1/1s show up. My max bid was significantly higher than what it went for, so I got off the hook cheap. We'll say that money paid for a few more things that will show up over the next week or so.

I think it is a bit of both, likely more of #2... it seems new collectors are joining in the chase for Heiskanen cards. I've noticed something similar in my own search for PC cards over the last year, seems there are new people entereing into the hobby and they are buying some big dollar cards.

It's looking like I will be priced out of picking up even one significant PC card from this year's Cup release.

Also, IMO, the grading of modern base cards looking for big profit$ is inflating the prices on the rare #d cards.

I had him right up there with Makar, but Heiskanen had a poor start this season. I consider him to be a great all around defenceman and one of the best young defencemen in the game today.

It's clear that someone has been working with dcsports to liquidate some sort of master collection. I did not win the Ultimate Shield 1/1 - my bid was the 2nd highest on that. The card had a lot of value to me as a status symbol but wasn't really something that excited me visually - I think the 1/1 I just posted is a much more interesting card to look at.

I'm at the point now where there aren't that many more interesting cards to add. Not interested in the 20-21 sticker auto products by and large - Miro signed a LOT of stickers apparently. So many of the big cards got sold in auctions throughout the spring, there are only a couple (and they're going to be super huge cards, like the Ultimate 1/1 Shield Auto and, if it exists, the Future Watch Patch Auto Black) that are things I'm really going to chase. Realized that while there are a lot of patch autos in 19-20 Cup, they're all pretty much the same. I'll get them when I get them dirt cheap. But for now, the buying intensity is taking a necessary and logical downshift.

The rainbow YG was one I bought raw. When I sent it off (January or so, it was a standard sub via PC Sportscards) I wasn't happy about doing it, because I really didn't like PSA slabs at the time, but I knew it had good 10 potential. Now that I like PSA subs a little more, I'm super stoked to have this. With how auto heavy my PC is, this is the first slabbed card in the entire collection, even though I have a bunch of slabbed Pokemon now.

I agree! He's always done really well against McDavid and it's very impressive. Always try to tune in to Stars games when I can to watch Miro play, just really a big fan!

Really excited about this one. CSG is not easy, but this was the cleanest RPA I've ever owned. Plus for the Stars, the green CSG slip isn't a problem.

Finally got around to witnessing your progress. Echo the multitude of amazing! Way better than I'll accomplish with Svechnikov. I quite frankly have not seen a real must have Svech in awhile anyways. Fist bump and a pat on the back for your PC. Warm and fuzzy seeing this kind of effort and realization. Kudos.

Thanks, man, this means a lot coming from you. Although I still only have the single really nice rookie 1 of 1 (the Foundations patch auto) - my white whale for the PC is the SPA black FW auto patch - that's the card of yours I most wish I had for Miro.

But rapidly getting to where you are - there's not a ton much else to get. There are a few patch autos from 19-20 Cup that I'd like...but I'd like them more at auction prices than BIN prices. But outside of 1 of 1s, my on-card RPA collection is pretty exhaustive. I'd like to eventually get a couple more OPC Platinum low numbered parallel rookie autos, but not a ton of interest on card rookie autos left besides those.

With Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz lighting it up for Dallas and Miro having a meh offensive season, plus the bazillion on card Miro 2nd year autos there were, I'm honestly not expecting a ton of on card autos from him for a while. For now, I'm mostly building out my Topps Chrome Black auto PC...but I always have my eye out.
