Everything GOAT is exploding is all sports across the board, but to see this card double in the last three weeks is incredible. It went from $2,000 to $5,000 in a just a few short weeks...

Big money entering the hobby, high end institutional money, and they aren't looking to invest in Tyler Herro cards.

Always felt that this card specifically was underrated, it's hard to find low-pop stuff of mainstream recognizable sets from the junk wax era, and last time I checked there were only like 400 of these.

For those of us that remember shaq mania it was unbelievable. I was 12 years old and everybody was trying to get Shaq’s cards, only problem was that he signed an exclusive deal with Classic. Well that ran out at the end of 1992 and that is why he was in all of the series 2 packs or was a redemption in series 1. Classic did an excellent job marketing him and he made Classic rich. That period of time was like no other and that is why people buy Shaq cards to take them back to that time and stir back up those memories.

I pulled this card while visiting my cousin in Brooklyn back in 1993. We were playing ball at a school near him and on the way home, stopped at a deli for some drinks. The owner had packs of 1992 Topps Basketball at the counter so I bought a few and landed a Shaq Gold RC. I had no top loaders so this card came back home to Toronto on the train in a book in my backpack. It’s been in a 9 pocket page ever since. Decided to send it in...glad it did :)

The only Shaq rookie I had as a kid was the fleer ultra '92. When I got back into the hobby last year I realized my old binder didn't keep that card gem minty, and I wanted to own one so I went ahead and purchased a PSA 10 (for around $140 I think).
Then I thought it would be fun to get some Topps Series 2 boxes and hunt for the base Topps and of course hope to get lucky with the Gold Topps. The first box I got for around $280 yielded two PSA 10 base cards (submitted last year). Then one morning I got an ebay search alert for a sealed box for $225 shipped. Jumped on that one right away and was absolutely thrilled when I pulled a perfectly centered 362 Shaq Gold out of that box. Unfortunately the other base Shaq's from that box were not centered very well.
So, the Gold is going off to PSA very soon for an express submission, I'm a bit worried since it has the infamous left front border "scrape" from the factory - but I've been told on here before that PSA doesn't let that take a hit on the score of the card since it was so common, and folks have seen 10's slabbed with that same mark on it, so here's to hoping for the best! Will not be selling, Shaq is my main PC!!!

This is a great story for the lone fact that a deli had packs. Young people who have not collected that long will have their mind blown to know that packs sports cards were everywhere, gas stations, supermarkets, drug stores, liquor stores, ice cream man, even my little league snack bar had them. I never pulled the gold but I did buy 2 raw ones (1 is currently at PSA).

I have 12 of these cards at PSA right now along with a Beam Team. By the time I get them back the card will drop in value once again. The card previously boomed last year and dropped big. I sold my PSA 9 for $450 and they dropped to $200 pretty shortly there after. Felt bad for the buyer when they dropped so quickly. I don't feel bad anymore and I wish they returned to the card to me! The PSA 9 is over $600 now.

oooooof. I scored a PSA 10 on one of these recently in a bulk sub and sold it for $2k (paid $8.50 for it in feb 2020 raw) so I won't complain. but damn I need to learn to hold stuff more often instead of dumping so soon. still have my PSA 9 though.

Then he will have lost exactly $8.50 + the grading fees. Always leave a trailer unless you're liquidating and/or really need the cash.

Man, those were the days! Our little league concession had some as well. It was either nachos or a pack of cards. For a little leaguer that was a mind blowing decision. I remember we'd go to Sams and boxes of 36 packs would be like $50 and that was like a once a year buy. Ahhh life was good lol

So there's currently only 450 PSA 10's of the Topps Gold, I have to wonder how much this will grow in the coming months with the explosion of this card? I'm going to start tracking the population count over time to see. I personally have one I'm submitting today that I pulled from a box just a few months ago, can't wait to see the results. We all know this is junk wax era here - but the gold cards had to be produced way less than the base paper.
1992 Topps Base Shaq PSA 10's: 2,048
1992 Topps Gold PSA 10's: 450
Also, to spark more conversation - I've noticed the listings of the 1996 Topps Finest Reprints version have disappeared on eBay, someone's gobbled them all up. What's everyone think about what may happen with the Chrome and Chrome Refractor versions of these cards? I get that they are reprints but I think they are very cool and extremely low population of grading out there.

Love the finest reprints actually. Would be one of the only ones I would like to own in my collection, along with stuff like 2012 Chrome football QB rookie reprint refractors or 2001 Topps Archives Reserve Autos

I have a funny story about this card. I had to dig it out just to make sure it wasnt a bad dream... no dice.
I was 11 or 12 when I pulled this out of a pack.
https://i.ibb.co/k334CxJ/IMG-2865.jpg (https://ibb.co/s55KY2C)
Immediately went into a holder. I was always super careful about my cards, but for some reason this one irked me. It had a line on the left side. Of course this was before the days of easy to access internet message forums and general places to gather info, etc. where I could have determined that it was a common print error.
So a week later I took a trusty eraser to that damn line. There! All better, I must have proudly exclaimed to myself.
https://i.ibb.co/m0hWp1n/IMG-2866.png (https://ibb.co/68DCQVK)
A few weeks ago (after seeing the parabolic move), my now 40yo self searched one my boxes thinking, yeah, I had one of those at some point. Once I saw it, I immediately remembered how it got to that state. SMDH. The eye roll got even larger when I googled the print line and found that not only was it common, but often doesnt detract from a high grade.
So there it sits in a sleeve in one of my maybe grade sections. At some point I will probably send it in just so I have a fun reminder of what was and what could have been.

Oh man that is a great story, kind of funny that all it took was an eraser! At first I thought you took some white out to it. Gotta admit you do take care of your cards, as it looks white as new for being pulled so long ago. Still a keeper.
This card is currently listed on ebay, it's very reassuring to me that PSA will GEM MINT 10 w/ factory print line even with recent submissions (check the registry #). I just sent one off for grading today, and mine too has this mark.
https://i.imgur.com/EgKE5WK.jpg
Certainly possible that a buyer will want to pay less if you tried to sell the PSA 10 with the mark vs one that does not have it, but I'm ok with that. No plans on selling mine. That card above on ebay is BIN $11,000 (oh my god).

Yeah, no idea why that one got to me considering how I kept my stuff. Who knows, its looking like this will be his 'it' card. Maybe one day even with a qualifier it will bring a few coins.
Until then it makes for a good conversation piece ha!

Nice pickup!
While Shaq Rookies came during the "Junk Wax Era"...his pop reports dont say that. Especially when compared to today's cards/pops. 2k Topps Base PSA 10s & 450 Gold 10s. The Gold is super short print type numbers when compared to today.

Throughout the entire run, centering is BRUTAL. If you look at any of the cards, the borders are large and the centering of obvious.
With so many Shaq RCs across so many sets, it's nice to see that 1992 Topps is becoming the go-to.

Hearing that makes me wonder if any kid pulled a NNOF Frank Thomas back in 1990 and thought WTF where is his name?!?!, and wrote it in with a pen or sharpie.
That would be an epic story.

I bought this card during shaqmania in 1992, the sticker was still on the holder. $120.00 cdn. I'm sending it in for grading, it's not perfectly centered but still meets the 60/40. Since mine doesn't have the printing error on the left it ticks me off the errored cards are still getting 10, doesn't seem right for the owners,of psa 10 without it.
