As you can tell in my bio, I'm new to the forum, but not new to collecting in general. Collected cards as a teen... now back into the hobby in my mid 40's (got a birthday coming soon)... and have collected toys and such along the way...

As I dive back in and become reacquainted with new things, the MOST overwhelming thing for me is FOMO on the MANY players i see as undervalued.

I'm a Colorado sports fanatic and can't help but want to buy Jokic, Murray among others, but... have began like many in prioritizing MJ/Kobe/LeBron where I still see value.

I've been learning quite a bit the past few weeks and I wanted to thank ya'll for the GREAT info!

So... who you got for your Top 3 list of FOMO players or specific cards if you must?

For me it's:
1. Luka
2. Jokic
3A. Durant
3B. Curry

Funny how the international guys are at the top...

Does it count if you started collecting 35 years ago but took like a 28 year break? Lol

My FOMO list

1. Magic/Bird have them together because their rookie card is my number one want right now
2. Patrick Mahomes
3. Luka

No, not 30 years. Maybe 20ish between my teenage adventures and settling in as an adult with a family. Many things I've started and then lost touch with due to LIFE...

How about you?

I have VERY similar fears to you as well! Don't even know where to begin with Mahomes since I'm just trying to get a baseline on basketball rn

Also... nice to see another CO member around here. Where abouts?

If he wins next week (maybe even if he doesn't), name me the pro athletes who have accomplished what he has in his first 4 pro seasons.

The one you can make a case for is Wayne Gretzky, who had 3 MVPs, 3 scoring titles, rookie of the year, but not championship.

I realize Ja is SUPREMELY talented, but... I would probably say rn that Dame Lillard is more undervalued and has higher career upside (last night was a good reminder). Thoughts on Dame v Ja FOMO?

Magic Johnson started his career strong

As did Larry Bird

Magic
Year 1 - NBA Champ, Finals MVP, ROY runner-up (to Bird), All-Star starter
Year 2 - Only played 37 games due to injury
Year 3 - NBA Champ, Finals MVP, All-NBA 2nd team, All-Star starter
Year 4 - All-NBA 1st team, Finals appearance, All-Star starter, 3rd in MVP vote

Bird
Year 1 - Rookie of the Year, All-NBA 1st team, All-Star, 4th in MVP vote
Year 2 - NBA Champ, All-NBA 1st team, All-Star starter, 2nd in MVP vote
Year 3 - All-NBA 1st team, All-Star starter, 2nd in MVP vote
Year 4 - Regular season MVP, All-NBA 1st team, All-Star starter

Thoughts on Dame v Ja FOMO?Lillard is about to turn 31, his cards are what they are value wise, he may be able to change them slightly if he were to somehow win an MVP or a title or two, but both are longshots. Titles and MVPs are what will push a guys value longterm, for the most part. There's just not much he can do to change his outlook, whereas Ja is 21 and the reigning ROY. He looks like he has the game to be the face of the league in a few years, like an Allen Iverson style game, but with the explosiveness for highlight reel dunks and better passing ability. The Grizz have a solid young nucleus of guys, and once they get Jaren Jackson Jr back they should be able to turn things up a notch. Ja and JJJ have a chance to be a special tandem for years, they just need to put another scorer out there, preferably a pure shooter that can draw defenders. Bane has a sweet stroke but I'm not sure he's the answer. Xavier Tillman was a steal in the draft, he's a really poor man's Draymond Green, no surprise they both came from that Tom Izzo school of hard-nosed defense and rebounding to win games.

I probably could have listed Brady too, but I already missed out on him. Respect the hell out of him but have hated the patriots with a passion for the last however long lol.

Good to see other Colorado members and Nuggets fans too. I am in woodland park it is west of the springs.

Yeah... I’m learning that, but... can’t help but believe that his game is a big part of why the NBA is flourishing globally. For that reason, I was hoping there was a card or two still worth looking into?

What up neighbor?! I’m in Colorado Springs myself! Not much to see in the Springs area as I did some looking in town a few weeks back, and wondered if there was anything worth visiting card shop wise in Denver or elsewhere?

BTW- pretty much feel the same on Brady as a Broncos fanatic

That’s awesome nice to meet you :-). Yeah I take my boys down to the springs like once a month to run the card store circuit. John’s is by far the best one down there but he really doesn’t get new stuff in often enough. We made the drive up to denver last summer to Mikes stadium sports cards to check it out. He has a nice shop, good wax collection. His shop was pretty crazy packed and I think like 80% or more of his singles were in a massive pile in the middle of the store but you weren’t allowed to thumb thru them...

FWIW, if the NBA season hadn't gotten delayed last year, Luka would have been the youngest All-NBA first team member ever. Luka is still younger right now than Bird was his rookie year.

Tbh, I don't have much FOMO outside of those 3. There were a few Luka cards I almost picked up some time back but I got antsy at the idea of spending big $ on an early career player (specifically had been targeting the 18 Kaboom, 18 Court Kings Fresh Paint Auto). But it's all good. Tons of great cards out there.

Oh, Pippen. I missed out on a few high end Pippen inserts which I do sort of kick myself over now...

Curious your #1 FOMO in Spida. As a Nuggets fan, I watch him quite a bit, but... can't seem to find reasons, at least yet, to want to invest in him. Simply a fan or you have an undervalued take?

For those of you holding Kareem... is there an underlying sense of concern WHEN LeBron breaks the All-time points scoring mark, that his cards are negatively impacted to where you consider moving on?

I've been wondering that since getting back into the hobby. Seems like some sellers have been moving their collections with this in mind...

Could it not be inverse, Lebron getting close and passing record puts more attention on Kareem and his legendary career. The scoring record is awesome but only a small part of his greater legacy. Lebron passing him in my mind in no way diminishes Kareem or the all-time (top 3 imo) career he had.

Certainly could be?! I agree with you regarding Kareem's career, just trying to understand what those invested in him, especially after decades, are thinking/feeling.

I only have 1 Kareem card myself, so simple curiosity amongst collectors/investors.

Mitchell at current prices is a great buy. Extremely safe floor and potentially very high ceiling. He can be a bit streaky (see today), but he’s fun to watch, leads a very strong contender, and can go absolutely atomic.

I’m a fan and buyer as well FWIW. I flip cards more than I hold, but I’m having an awfully tough time bringing myself to sell any Mitchell (or my other offseason target Zion for that matter) at the moment.
