View Full Version : Is Cale Makar going to change the hockey card defense market?

Cale Makar is clearly a special player. With that being said, his cards are very expensive right now.
1. Are his cards overvalued?
2. Will his card prices change the landscape of the defenseman card market?
3. Will he make other defensemen worth investing in for the future?
FWIW, I think his cards are at a fair value. I think if they go much higher they’ll be destined for a drop.

the value will come once the national audience and fans can see him again. Right now he's playing his games after most fans have gone to bed, without fans in the stands. The cards that are going to generate attention and value this year are guys who create snappy gifs and instagram clips that spittin chiclets and twitter can disseminate fast. the crosby lacrosse move, the mcdavid stuff, these other players aren't going to pop big until the playoffs and who knows what happens then. He's a great young player. no need to rush.

If the Avs make the final 4 and get a national audience, Makar prices will make a big move. He is that good.

In hockey, long-term value is all about winning Stanley Cups.
You can be a great player and produce terrific stats, but if you don't win a couple of Cups, you'll never be perceived as highly as those who did.
Go back and look at who the most valuable players are in each decade....it's the ones who won multiple Cups.

You mean more so than Doughty, Lidstrom, Karlsson, Hedman?

that was before the current flip market. all it takes is one looneytune 2 million follower social media wunderkind to say hockey is really undervalued, why is a sport played in an arena w/lebron selling for a few hundred and this stuff goes nuts.
I could easily see this spring as the current nba class fails to meet zion levels, mlb teams do their annual service time manipulation stunts and football goes into offseason mode, the flip energy looking for a new new thing and a new crop of young guys becoming a thing for them.

Until very recently I was in the camp of D-men not sustaining their value long term, and card sales for guys like Makar and Hughes would eventually come back down to Earth. And that might still happen.
But now I'm more inclined to look at these guys as true game changers. So what if they play up from the back end? The game is once again evolving into a top-four man unit format with a single defensive presence playing back and keeping it simple, pinching in for pressure as necessary. The whiz-kid D can then chase back if/when the puck is moved out, retrieve it and bring it back up forward.
Hughes, Makar, Heiskanen, Chabot- these young guys are just that dynamic and capable. These are the young names that have everyone so excited.
Hedman, Karlsson, Doughty and Lidstrom YGs are all moving up in value recently and I think this is in part due to the current wave of young phenoms.

They are all HOFs. I think Makar has the potential to be at that level for a majority of his career. Look at what he’s doing at 22.

Sorry, I was asking in regards to your "is Cale Makar going to change the hockey card defense market?" question.
I know that the guys I mentioned are all HOFers. I know Makar has potential... I know he's 22.
Are you looking for more change than the guys I mentioned have generated?

Mike Green put up over a PPG when he was 23/24 two seasons running. Now his young gun is a $1.50. I have no idea myself, but I wonder what his young guns were trading at back in 2010.

If Makar holds firm... Quinn Hughes will also.
Are these 2 going to have better careers than Hedman and Karlsson?

Ah. I see what you meant. I think that since the market is exploding today he can change the defense market. I think that more people will buy defensemen because of Makar.

I think Makar can be better than Karlsson. Hedman is another story. Makar can be at Herman’s level, I’m not sure if he can be better though.

Look at what Nick Lidstrom cards go for...or Larry Robinson and Denis Potvin cards...other than Bobby Orr, defensemen get zero hobby love.

I picked up a chara rc auto for under $8 shipped a couple of years back! I know not a YG and a heavy printed era, but really right?

Just look at anything Duncan Keith, the guy was playing over 30 min a game on a team that won cups....his rookies are 25% of Makars....I expect them to drop if an when reality sets back in on cards

I agree. Different game, different era and a different collector mentality. I see Makar holding/gaining a lot of hobby love going forward, and that is not only based on how hot hockey cards have become lately.

High grade cards of those guys are getting some real decent money/hobby love lately.
Lidstrom's RC was during the junk wax era so there is that, but still his OPC and UD RC's are being sought out as of late.
Larry Robinson's RC has always received some decent prices realized and even more so lately during this boom.
Potvin's are tough to find centered but also gaining ground as of late.
Personally, like what Valley wrote, I also only see further growth of those guys going forward.

Green's young guns were selling for no more than $5.00. Good point.

rc auto??
Remember when ekblad sold for $60
Rasmus dalin for $60
Klingberg sold well
McAvoy sold crazy like $80+
Brent burns sells good still but sp era
Laine/barzal type can't even hold their value.
Green's young guns were selling for no more than $5.00. Good point.
Ovechkin was $40 then...

He is electrifying to watch and already the best skater not named McDavid in the league. His lateral movement walking the line is the best in the game too. So much fun to watch.

I just got this on the ePack site in Pack Wars. I was shooting for the Auston but since I was within reach, decided to pursue this card as well. Just missed his jersey number.

This is nice, do you have to play a ton to have a chance at these? I played a few but never really followed the leaderboard thing to really know what's going on.

Yeah, sadly you have to. It was tough to find anyone online late last night so I was forced to play the computer. For every victory, you get a live 19/20 OPC Platinum single. So every time I lost to the CPU,someone didn't win something. I ended up going 5-5, then 15-15..etc. I think the algorithm is rigged for profits if you play the CPU. As for singles, I ended up with an auto card and a Jack Hughes Black(Pack Wars) RC. The Top 10 is toughest to break through as they get 60 plus wins. Top 25 is attainable. Top 50 takes about 20-25 wins.
