2013-14 Innovation Kaboom Thread

I was updating my card spreadsheet today and ran into the last few auctions for this set. It's amazing they've jumped up in value again even though there isn't much buzz around them:

Carmelo - $180
Dame - $580
Kyrie - $310
CP3 - $130
Blake - $100
Wall - $105
Pierce - $110

There were other auctions ending from Australia that were much cheaper so there could have been some shilling involved.

Still, it seems like its design and rarity have finally catch up to the Hobby. I can't remember who it was but I feel like there were a couple of members here that have the full set. The idiot that I am, I never got the LeBron, Kobe or Curry but at least I pulled the Durant and have like 10% of the Blake Griffins! :flex:

And yes, I have more than a few so you can say I'm pumping (even though I'm not selling any time soon).

These are the first year of the Kabooms right? If so, it's not surprising since it seems every other first year release has taken off. I'm a fan.

I can't believe that raw Lillard that sold for $576 was a real sale. Another raw one sold the same day for $167.70. The latter seems like a far more realistic price.

I have one of these, so I'm not hating, I'm just genuinely amazed.

I bought five of the seven lebron Kabooms from last march to may. Three months of 2020. I paid 2k total, so 400 avg. Three came back psa 9. Still have other two raw. These prices are silly man. I see this insert having serious long term value. Look how few of them there are on eBay.

So yeah. It got weird immediately after a scooped them up. Hell, I may have even caused a run. We are looking at 2k turned into +20k in less than a year.

I considered the first year Curry at one point as my understanding is that was the only year where an actual artist designed the card, so I thought that was pretty cool. But there were just always other cards that drew me in more. I'm honestly surprised there hasn't been more chatter on here about this set lately given the parabolic rise in values.

Full disclosure: I have maybe 2/3 of the 16-17 Studio From Downtown set complete. They saw a nice uptick in value in mid 2020 that has made finishing the set more difficult. The Kabooms have blown past them in terms of value since then. I'm thinking there are similar print runs for both sets (both case hits), and both have been annual releases that have now funneled over into other sports. From Downtown might be a set to keep an eye on for a rise in value. If they shoot up, I'll likely have to dump everything except the Curry and Simmons. I don't have the Kobe, and it may end up simply being too costly to finish the set if these end up in Kaboom level price territory.

I recall the number 50 being thrown around a lot when I was putting the set together. They were 1 per case.

Super short printed, iconic set cards of iconic players are gonna be super expensive and pretty much bubble proof.

I really like the Kaboom - Spent so much this year on cards that I sold my graded 2013-14 Innovation Lebron (& Harden) Kaboom's to help recoup some of what I spent.
Now I really regret it. :mad:

PSA 9 Wade just ended at $1750. I have a few PSA 9's including a Wade. I definitely sold my Curry too soon though.

Crazy seeing the Blake/Rondo/Howard around 150. What's the cheapest card of the set, Wall? Even that one has to be at least 120, right?

Also, Westbrook seems to be underpriced. He can't be cheaper than all those other guys.

I think it's safe to say every Kaboom card, across every sport is going through the roof. Look at the pop numbers.crazy low. Search for Lebron Kaboom on eBay and you get 10 - yes, only 10 cards. Name another annual set with a pop that low.

I wrote about these Kaboom prices skyrocketing back on Nov 24, 2020 in GeechQuest’s insert thread that is stickied at the top here, but I don’t think that thread gets a lot of regular activity. From about April through June of 2020 I bought singles from this set and completed it around the end of June. I put the first 19 cards from the set together in about a month, and then it took me around another month and a half or so to get the Kobe, because no auctions were popping up and I couldn’t find anyone to do a BIN. I bought all the cards raw, none were graded - I spent about $400 or so on the LeBron, and I think around $130 on the Curry, and when the Kobe was the last card I needed, I spent $609 in an eBay auction, and I thought I overpaid because that was a little higher than previous comps. I didn’t care because I just wanted to complete the set. All of the other cards were less than $100 each. The KD might have been closest but I don’t think I spent more than $80 on that. All in all I think I spent somewhere around $2K on the whole set.

When I looked back in November, which was only 5 months after I completed the set, I couldn’t believe how much prices spiked. I saw Wade sell for $305, Dirk for $320, and Curry for $350. Then I saw a KD for $775 and a raw Kobe sell for $3500 and my jaw dropped. In 5 months KD increased nearly 10x and the Kobe was about 6x.

And now these new prices are nutso! I’m so glad I completed this set when I did because I’d never be able to afford most of these now. I never thought about grading any of mine because I didn’t really care and I was just happy to have the set, but with these prices it’s almost stupid not to grade. Even if I’m not planning on selling anytime soon, I think it’s probably worthwhile to start sending them to PSA now. Some of mine have some minor dinged corners and some chipping on the back corners and edges, which I think is pretty common with this set. However, the Kobe and the Curry both look to be in amazing condition from what I can tell. I think both of them should be 9s and they might have an outside chance at a 10. I think I’ll start slowly subbing these over the next few months. Maybe by this time next year I’ll have the full set graded and it might be worth another 5x what they’re selling for now!

Thanks! For me this was one of the luckiest examples where the “just buy what you like” philosophy worked out really well with the timing of when I was buying them. The prices will most likely continue to rise over time just based on supply and demand. It seems like there is a lot of attention on these right now. I know someone else mentioned earlier in this thread that Gary V talked about these a few weeks ago, so that always helps get eyes on things like these. People are also selling high pop base cards and putting their money into rare cards of top players, and this set is loaded with future HOFers.

In addition to more people becoming aware of these, it looks like supply has really dipped. When I was buying to complete the set in the spring last year, I didn’t have trouble buying any of them except the Kobe, and I guess the LeBron to some extent (I got lucky with that one because I lost an auction but the winning bidder didn’t pay and the seller sent a second chance offer to me, which I jumped on immediately), but the rest of the set had multiple options available at any given time and it didn’t take me long to buy those other 18 cards.

By contrast now, I just looked at eBay and there are only 28 listings for “2013-14 Kaboom” which is very low considering this is a 20-card set. And the worst part is that only 6 of them are auctions (2 of them are PSA 10 Duncans, there’s a PSA 10 Kyrie with a super high starting bid that probably won’t sell, raw copies of Dwight Howard and John Wall, and finally a BGS 9.5 Kobe from PWCC). So anyone looking to buy now is in a really tough spot. It’s either try and bid on one of these 6 auctions and hope the price doesn’t get out of control (or possibly shilled), or you break down and hit one the BINs out there, which are all priced above recent comps. Not sure anyone out there will want to pay $690 for a raw Lillard, $8K for a PSA 9 Curry, or $150K(!) for a PSA 10 LeBron.

I've found similar trends with 2016 Studio from Downtown. I've got it about 75% complete but it's becoming harder to find and crazy expensive. I should have bought some of the bigger names sooner because I still need Lebron and Curry.

I don’t think these cards have scratched the surface yet to be honest. I know everyone has different tastes, but to me these cards will be iconic. They just have that 90s vibe I get from 97 pmgs. I bid 2500 on the BGS 9 Curry that ended the other night and thought for sure I’d win it, but it went over 3k. I’ve been picking up various players the last year or so with my most recent being a Dirk I got for 700.a few weeks ago. I’m still mad at myself I didn’t get a Lebron when they were less than 200, but if anyone has one and wants to trade for a Curry/Durant/AD/ and CP3 then let me know. I’ve made the mistake of selling too early before, but I won’t be making that mistake with these as I’m holding onto them.

I think the ship has sailed with the From Downtown inserts too. I only have 3 (pulled a Yogi and a Curry, bought a Jimmy Buckets for my PC) but I've seen an uptick in prices. Funny thing is, the actual Studio boxes might be one of the best deals out there at around $300 right now.

I'm up to 15 with 8 in PSA 10 and 7 raw. Missing the KAT, Kyrie, Booker, Wiggins, and Kobe. I was always fond of the set but was busy chasing other things and only started chasing From Downtown when those other things became too expensive.

I got the Lebron, Curry, and Lillard all in PSA 10 for $900 total in mid 2020, and from there started filling in the less expensive cards. That's right in my wheelhouse... $500ish for the top guys and then less on the way down. Even when prices went up to $2k-ish for PSA 10 LeBron and slightly less for Curry, I figured I'd bite the bullet and try to get a Kobe in that range when one popped up. But now, real or fake, that $3,500 Kobe with PWCC is going to push everything else up, and I'm in a position where I have to liquidate even further to get five cards of guys I don't even collect at a steep price (for me). Looking at like $5k to finish out a set I'm 75% complete with maybe $3k into it in total.

I feel like every month I have to come up with a new collecting strategy at this point. It's bittersweet... I'm definitely not sad the cards have gone up in value, but it's making it tougher and tougher to enjoy the hobby the way I would prefer to.

Very nice! I just sent my Kobe, LeBron, and Curry to PSA in an Express order today. The Kobe I think has a very small outside chance to gem, but they will probably start grading these harsher (if they haven’t already) so realistically it will probably get a 9, or maybe an 8 in the absolute worst case scenario that there’s a flaw I completely missed. The LeBron will probably get an 8 since there is definitely some chipping on the back of that one. The Curry I think has the best shot to gem, but again I would not be shocked if it got a 9. But even at Kobe=8, LeBron=8, and Curry=9, that would still be a huge bump in value compared to what I paid about 8 months ago. About $1200 for the 3 cards plus a few hundred more in grading fees to get potentially $20K or so in value back. Not too shabby!

I would have liked to go for the set each year but they started getting crazy prices...

So this one is pretty much in line with what I’d expect and is actually more than the last BGS 9.5 sale. Good to see them holding strong...I wouldn’t expect them to jump too much higher at the moment since they already exploded so much recently.

The same seller had a bunch of 2014-15 Kabooms all ending tonight - I really wanted the Ginobili but prices got out of hand and I lost it at the end. Might regret not bidding more, because I’ve never seen that card up for sale, and if/when it ever shows up again, I’m sure it will sell higher.

Another nice sale last night - Curry PSA 10 went for $5,655. Nearly double what the PSA 9 sold for a few days ago.

I saw that and my first thought was that prices are getting softer.

It was an incredible deal getting a PSA 10 Curry at less than 6k. These are extremely sensitive cards, even PSA 9s command a premium. I don't even know what the pop report for it is but I don't think it would ever hit 20.

Another Curry 10 just sold for $6,433. So it does look like that last buyer may have gotten a steal! I’m sure they’ll only keep going up from here.

There is a Curry 9.5 ending soon, be weary. I thought about going for it, but all the Currys I've seen have that little mark on the upper left corner on the back of the card, but that one doesn't. It also looks a little short around that "No 5" to the top edge and the "NBA" logo to the top edge compared to the other versions I've seen. Not saying it is trimmed for sure, but it looks a little iffy, so just be cautious . Any other opinions on it?

I had a true gem+ Curry that I sold in January for $4250 on a best offer. I thought the one last night might end a little higher, but I guess the 9 subgrade held it back some.

I am in love with the 2013-15 kaboom sets. Wish I picked more up before the crazy price increases! But even at these prices, I think they have a lot of potential to increase in value over many years given how rare they are. Extremely low pop and hard to grade. They’re also just incredibly unique and feel more like pop art pieces to me. Might be a good time to take advantage of this recent dip here..

Good point about the 9 surface sub-grade, I hadn’t checked the subs after I saw that sale. I haven’t seen a PSA graded Kobe sell in a little while, so I’ll keep checking to see if those pop up any time soon. I think the last PSA 9 sold for over $10K. And overall I think you’re right, the market had to cool on these and there had to be some sort of correction. I think we’re seeing that correction on a lot of big money cards right now. They just exploded too high a little too quickly. They will bounce back up over time, no doubt.

I always felt there was something iffy with that LeBron. The 14K seemed too high even with the recent increase in prices.

I feel like 9k is pretty good for its market value. Won't be shocked if the Kobe gets there soon. Long term they are probably 10k cards raw.

As a fan, and set builder of Panini Inovation parallels, I can say there are way more Kabooms from 2013-14 than any other year. At least 2x. I know they moved to excalibur, but search any player present across multiple years, and you will see way more 2013s.

I've been picking up Kabooms for years, and I agree that 2013-14 has the highest print run by 2x. Maybe 2018 Kabooms from Kaboom packs are the next highest print run. I think 2015-16 might be rarest as I believe they were 1 in every 2 cases.

That card did change hands though, because the $14K sale was by PWCC and then the new one from last night was the same card with the same BGS serial number, but it was some random seller with less than 100 feedback. Like I said earlier, I hope the person who just sold it wasn’t the same guy that bought it from PWCC, because if so, they just lost $5K.

I bought my LeBron raw about 10 months ago for $400. Nice time see a 10x increase in less than a year! Mine is at PSA right now, and I’m expecting an 8. The front looked perfect, but there is definitely some chipping on the back corners and edges, which is really common with these, and that’s why I mentioned that you couldn’t see the back of the one Probstein just sold. The front can look perfect and the back can be wrecked on these.

Nice score on that Ginobili! One sold on eBay about a month ago but I got outbid at the last second. It was the only time I’ve ever seen one come up for sale publicly in the last 2 years.

BGS 9 Lebron ended at $2600 today, wow, the whole market is in correction mode. The Lebron had a reserve that wasn't met, so maybe that turned some people off. Looks like I may be able to snag a Lebron if prices keep going down like they have been.

I thought the drop-off from the $14K sale down to $9K was huge...but the auction tonight just closed at only $2600. Some more soft sales recently ended. In mid-February a Curry PSA 9 went for over $3K, then in early March the same grade went for $2,850. And now two more PSA 9s just sold for only $1,428 and $1,293.88. Still a big increase compared to where it was about 6 months ago, but waaaayyyy down from the peak about 6 weeks ago.

I think people are starting to realize that first year Kaboom might be one of the most iconic inserts Panini has ever made (imo of course as I know some people don't like them). I'm glad I have the ones I do and I plan on holding them long term, but I still don't have the Lebron or Kobe, which really sucks as they are a lot. If anybody in this thread has one, I'd be willing to move a nice Brady numbered rookie.

Figured I would bump this up with a question/comment:

Why do the hit rate for 10s on the Kobe and Steph so much higher than the rest of the set? I get there's been regrades (and tons of them by looking at the pop report) but it's almost twice as much as LeBron's and at least 60% better than the next best one (KD).
