View Full Version : [Vegas Dave] The Sports Card Market will Collapse by 2024

Vegas Dave vs Gary Vee, Remember it was me 3 years ago that shook this sports card market by storm and predicted this boom. Everyone laughed at me when I spent $400,000 on a piece of cardboard instead of buying a house or investing it in another opportunity. I made a bold prediction to the world that my Mike Trout rookie card would break the all time Honus Wagner record. 2 years later I executed my vision and the card sold for just under $4,000,000. Not only did this silence the haters and critics, it got the sports card industry to explode. People now viewed cards as a huge money making opportunity and not just a hobby.
Now I am the first person in the world to predict the sports card market will collapse by the end of 2024. This reminds me of the sub prime mortgage industry crash in 2007.
I currently still have money invested in this industry but if what's going on currently in the market does not stop immediately, not only will the card industry die, the hobby will be gone forever as well
After watching this video, who do you believe now? Vegas Dave or Gary Vee? Share your thoughts below.

I know nothing about the economics, but I know anyone willing to destroy that card to try to get people's attention is not someone I want to listen to. He seems to have just as much, or more, interest in manipulating the market as Gary Vee or anyone else. Don Lapre, Tom Vu, and Ron Popeil were some of the names that came to mind while watching this video.

Judging by all of the Vegas Dave threads popping up across these forums I think it's safe to say he's getting exactly what he wants right now.
The only way to make him go away is to stop giving him the attention he so desperately craves.

I posted a thread (you can find it) talking about when LeBron Chrome hit $1,000
It was about 5-6 years ago
But sure
4 years from now it finally crashes
Some stuff will crash. No one will be paying $150 for Coby White in 2024
But let’s get some context

Vega Dave will probably be right, but it won't be the vintage stuff taking much of a hit. He clearly doesn't understand perceived value. A 100k Jordan or Kobe card can only fall so far before someone is willing to take a risk based on history and the perceived value of the card.
It will be the modern market going under. And Panini is absolutely determined to do it before 2024.

The modern market tumbling is nothing new. You can go back 10-15 and maybe even 20 years and find plenty of people that got burned chasing the latest hyped Rookies..
The cream always rises to the top and there are many sets that will go.up even if a lot of the new money leaves. I agree, vintage ia gonna be just fine. Same with the 90s.

If single cards were printed to the millions maybe I could agree with possible collapse.
But these doom and gloomers don't realize that the current market is extremely shallow, when you only have a particular card where a few hundred or thousand exist, and maybe like 10-200 PSA 10's of those particular cards exist the market can only collapse so far. Like saying the art market is going to collapse, anyone can make art at home or buy quality art on the cheap these days, but there's only so many Picasso's and Van Gogh's to go around.
I mean I could only dream if card market collapse, it be nice to pick up some auto MJ's, Kobe's, and Lebron's on the cheap. If only ~300 MJ PSA 10 rookies exist and it collapse to a few thousand it just takes one person with deep pockets to wipeout and control the entire MJ rookie PSA 10 market buying them all during the "collapse".

The most hilarious part is almost nobody realizes the somewhat clever motive behind him saying it'll collapse by the end of 2024. That way if it "crashes" at ANY point before then, he can go "see, look, I told you guys! I'm a genius." And if it doesn't crash before the end of 2024 so much time will have passed that almost nobody will remember he made the prediction in the first place.

For sure! It's oldest trick in book with market crash/dollar crash prognosticators. One trick doom calling ponies, eventually you'll be right just give yourself wide margin and surreptitiously move goalposts if your call doesn't pan out.

I honestly don't think he's very educated about sports cards. I've seen a few videos of him opening product and he doesn't really have a clue about the hobby. He's just a lucky idiot who bought a Mike Trout superfractor and sold it for a bundle. He's good at what he does i suppose which is promoting himself and taking advantage of people gambling on games and selling picks.

He's a self-admitted noob in the modern card world, and openly admitted so. He said he consulted a 'friend in the know' and told him he wants to buy the best cards of the best beisbol player in the game and money is no concern.
Survey said: Mike Trout.

I agree. Cards don't magically go from being a 50K card to a 750K within a year. All these millionaires driving the prices up on high end cards; are going to exit; and when it's time to go... they'll take what they can get for it.
I feel like the sub 500$ cards won't be affected as much; but the PSA 10's that are about 5-10X higher than they should be will. I can totally see the PSA 10's going back down to the BGS 9.5 price range; and BGS stay consistent in pricing when the bubble pops. I do think; they'll still be more fans/collectors in 2024; BUT the large investors/ people trying to make money will exit.

That's not a bad prediction. Def will be nuance to how things correct. I also think ultra-modern early career player cards with high pop, those have the softest underbelly... but the premiums on some cards across the board are just crazy (I sold my Flair Kobe row 0-2 rcs, didn't think I'd ever sell but prices were just too crazy not too for me).

Man - there are so many threads about the market crashing lol.
Scarcity - even artificial + Legends + Popular brand and sets or Popular inserts. Will always maintain strong value.. it may ebb and flow with market demands, but sustainable true value is there and will always be there. IMO... and like they always say, no one said you have to sell when the price is down.
Most people spending 100k + on a card, isn't too worried about where their next paycheck is coming from.

Yeah, this is what the bet hinges on imo. The big money people buying high-end will cash out if they get bored with the fad, but not because things correct (although both could happen at same time). Usually rich people aren't stupid with their money, guessing they buy for the hold and if things go down they won't necessarily be in a hurry to cash-out, they have plenty of resources so they can afford to hold in a downturn and wait for future up-cycles. Tbd.
When interests go up and housing crashes that's when it will happen.
But that might not be in our lifetime.
Just a correction.
A decent correction will come after this season is done.
Late summer/early fall.
A Coby White rookie becoming worthless in 2024 is not a crash.

Probably because he isn't confident in the market actually collapsing and wants to see what his words would do to the market itself. Aka if I say this will people start trying to liquidate their cards.
Maybe he's truly trying to have another drop in prices so that he can re-invest. Who knows.
The market is extremely volatile right now. Prices at 10k one week and 5k another. A correction is not a collapse.
But who knows. For example, I don't believe in Top Shot, but if I were to guess when it would die I would say within 2-3 years because it clearly is not dying within the next 12 months. He could just be making it up.
But then again someone just dropped over 4 million on a Luca. With prices like that there could be a correction.

Speculative assets, especially trivially inessential ones like cards, art, and bitcoin, are driven by the Common Knowledge Game--what "everyone knows." When these guys say something, it's stuff everyone then knows and it becomes, if not necessarily fact, a partial driver of sentiment. Most of this train is driven by sentiment, since cards have zero intrinsic value. Add in cognitive biases and you get a massive herd of sheep that can be manipulated into any abattoir you choose, even the Bol Bol and Ja Morant and PSA 10 slaughterhouse, while you're busy selling both sheep food and mutton.

The market always goes down at the same time every year. Then it starts to rebound when free agency opens. It's been the same for as long as I can remember.
When playoffs start, I think reality sets in for alot of collectors. Tatum won't be winning it all this year. Giannis is going to have a tough time getting past the Nets. Kawhi looks to be in for another disappointment. People stop buying.
