View Full Version : Vintage Wax Packs. Yes or No?

Back in the day I was on the hunt for a Ricky Henderson rookie card, and since I could not afford to pick one up outright I figured I would buy a couple packs from that year and try my luck. I was quickly discouraged by my old man with the reasoning that the wax packs can be so easily tampered with. Has anyone ever run into this or is this a paranoid myth?
There is a card show in my area this weekend and I would like to know if these wax packs are worth the money or if I should just get something else less questionable instead. I would be so stoked if I actually did find a Rickey Henderson rookie!

Smart money would to be to buy the card outright as mentioned above, but where is the fun in that....Imo if you are going to buy packs, buy graded packs of either psa or gai. This way they are not tampered with. If you didnt want to go that route, try going to baseball card exchanges website. They deal will all vintage unopened stuff. For 1980 they have wax packs, cello packs and rack packs. Their stuff is not searched as the owner of the company is the one who grades vintage packs for psa. Hope all this info helps you. Good luck to you. If you are ever on youtube check my page out as I have done a few vintage pack breaks on there, didnt do so well on them but one pack, but half the fun of it is opening something so old!! My user name on youtube is the same as here.

Do you have any of these for sale?? If so I will buy all of your PSA/BGS 9's for $125 each delivered. They sell for between $200 and $250 in a PSA 9 holder.

Bccg and bgs are completely different in terms of demand

Thanks for the info. I love opening packs and figure that it is probably cheaper to pick up the packs than drop $50 plus on a single card. I just used the RH card more as an example than anything. I would be stoked to get one, but probably equally stoked if I got someone else I liked just as much.

exactly why i understand your post completely... you want to pay 125 dlvd on a card that sales for 200-250 repeatedly. yeah sure ill sell mine to you along with all my other cards. makes great sense. thanx for helping out. next time ill stay off the threads offering my opinon:)!

I think gunshowboy's point was that he never said "PSA graded 9".....he just stated graded 9 with no grading company specified. With that being the case, I am sure there are some 9 Henderson's for $50 graded by somebody other than PSA.
If all the OP wants is to own a Rickey rookie, I am sure you could get a pretty nice ungraded one for well under $50 with a little searching.

dude for the second time i never said a "PSA9" i said graded 9 and was just providing an example...
for instance i could go spend 90 on a box of BDPP 09 trying to get a Trout auto or just buy the card. imho i would rather buy the card -- like the question in the OP asked
where the hell did all the vulchers come from so worked up about a PSA9 Henderson card dang

Take my post to heart. Opening old (unsearched) packs are great. Most of the time you wont get great cards, but if and when you do its worth it. Not to mention that they should be in great shape, maybe except for the centering!!!

Thanks a ton and your post was one of the posts I was talking about when I said it truely helped.
Your quote in a true essence is what I was talking about with opening wax packs. Thanks again.

If you do buy packs, it would be best if you actually know who the seller is. Wax was used to seal the packs in the olden days, so by taking a hair dryer you could melt the wax, open the packs, and then seal the packs up and sell them. I also know that companies used to pack the boxes with packs with certain players in certain positions in the boxes. I know back in 1990, people could open a box of 1990 Leaf and pull the exact packs with the Frank Thomas rookies in them out of a fresh box.
Busting old boxes are fun, just be careful who you buy them from. If you buy from EBay, make sure to buy from someone with lots of feedback and read the buyers comments to find out how the boxes they have bought were. Good luck in your search.

And Gum Stains.....LOL
This is very true. I just had that happen to me in one of my youtube videos. I opened a 75 mini pack and got a hank aaron with the gum stuck to it, luckily it didnt stain the card, but was hard to get it off the card. I have heard that if you put the card in the freezer for awhile the gum comes off easy...

these days most vintage packs and sealed boxes have been tampered with, in other words they have already been opened and resealed, there are plenty of places that sell them, the sellers may not have been doing it, they are just selling boxes that they got from another source, the older the box, the greater the chance of tampering due to the fact that over they years it had many owners
there are few, if any, places left that have boxes that are not tampered with, but that should make it much harder to find the real deal, sounds like fun
someone mentioned buy graded packs, actually that does not mean that they have never been opened, i know for a fact that one scammer sends all his opened vintage packs to GAI to get graded and he sells them on ebay at a higher price as a result, GAI has had financial troubles so they deal directly with all kinds of scammers now, that is why ebay is flooded with all kinds of GAI COA's now, they authenticate so much bogus crap now it is not funny, it is only a matter of time until they get banned from ebay
some scammers who sell altered patches on cards send the cards in to get graded, so people think the patches are real, THEY DO NOT GRADE THE AUTHENTICITY OF PATCHS NOR CAN THEY TELL YOU IF A PACK HAS BEEN TAMPERED WITH
factory sealed packs are out there, the challenge is finding them, hint, you will not find ANY on ebay
