View Full Version : Thoughts on using MAGS vs. grading for PC Cards.

General question/poll to anyone.
I was using SGC to grade and protect my PC stuff (degrom, alonso, etc). No matter what I thought the grades would be. But now with the cost of grading seemingly never going back to the old days, I bought a bunch of mags and my goodness my pc stuff looks great in them and I love them.
A. Do you grade your PC Cards? regardless of condition
B. Which do you prefer, mags or slabs?
Thanks!

slabs are the best
since its your PC, just wait until things calm down, and then bulk sub at that time

Interesting that you posted this, as I have recently had the same thought process (sub PSA for SGC though) ... I think cards look better in mags as the focus is on the card, not the label/grade.

I would only grade a card I planned to sell and then only a card that is worth substantially more graded. So many cards aren't worth the grading fee.
I also just put cards in penny sleeves and toploaders unless they are are worth more than $100 or so. Magnetic if they are worth more.

Put that in a superior fit sleeve and to me that look/protection can't be beat.. Penny sleeve/top loader/superior fit sleeve is second to me.

Avoid mags if possible. Slabs or toploaders.

I've sent some PC stuff to SGC but mostly I use mags or card savers...got a lot of IP autos I'm waiting to send to PSA someday.

My new go-to PC protection.
Make fun if you want but I love the look and feel better with it sleeved inside.

Since you’re not in a rush ( PC ) —- slab ‘em at PSA / BGS.
Why you ask? …… if life throws you a nasty curveball, your Cards are in their most liquid, high $ form for sale.
If it doesn’t happen ( the curveball ), your PC is in the great protection that TPG cases offer :)!

Possible damage to cards would be my guess.

Slab… my PC is literally the reason I started buying slabs
You can call me lame but a 86 Topps Bernie Kosar, that sells for $5.00 in a magnetic, simply doesn’t do it for me… and that’s for a mint one. A random raw? That’s a 99 cent card. It’s a cute trip down memory lane but I don’t have time for a billion 99 cent cards that are PC nostalgia
A PSA 10? That does
Right or wrong based on the price increase and whether you think that’s worth it

Most of my main collection is in toploaders with superior fit sleeves over them, but I have a few mags for cards that I display and I'm planning to get more. At the current cost and speed of grading, I think mags are the best option in most cases.
I'm curious if anyone has tried both the 1st and 2nd generation of those Pro-Mold mags that hold a penny sleeve and which version you prefer.

I like slabs because I think they provide the most protection and look the best.

How many cards are we talking? Do you care about condition? Do you care about many of them (guessing) not being worth anything?
All of that is valid if that’s what you like. That’s awesome.
I just have no interest in owning a bunch of 99 cent cards that are raw. Hurts my brain.
Just having an Eric Metcalf Score rookie? Pass
Has to be a PSA 10 so it’s at least worth something

Sleeves, toploaders, and superior fit sleeves for my PC. Grading doesn't add any value for me (although I know it will when it comes time to sell). I feel like slabs / mags would take up too much space. It'd also be a bit silly for a lot of my PC cards since they're low value cards that I just happen to like.

Depends what it is for me. My RCs I like to have a graded copy and don’t care too much about the grade, I just want to have the confidence that it is verified to be Authentic. I know that grading isn’t a guarantee that they are authentic but if I think it looks authentic and a TPG agrees then I am comfortable with it being considered authentic.
For relics and autos, I will not go after graded cards. If it is pack pulled, then I don’t care about someone else saying it is real, I now just want it protected. I am not a fan of magnetics for regular sized cards, penny sleeve and top loaders for me. The difference in price for a PSA 10 auto compared to a raw is not worth it to me.
My vintage sets, I prefer raw because I put together low grade sets, so I am not worried about the grade or the flaws on the card. Those just go into a shoebox, and I might penny sleeve the big stars but that’s about it.
So I think you need a third option that says both, and change magnetic to top loader/magnetic.

If I didn’t do slabs… this is the answer
Magnetics are overkill for a PC unless your PC is super high end and specific
If I ever went raw?
Top loaders all day everyday

Yeah, I’ve personally had some bad experiences with mags, but some people seem to like them. The main issue I had was surface scratching.

Well not so much .99c garbage. More like low numbered parallels, gold refractors and that kinda thing.
Definitely hold raw… much easier to store and enjoy… plus no $$ drain for TPG
I find mags to be kind of bulky, and easier to damage cards. Especially if you move things around or want to ship them.
Penny sleeve, top loader, and superior fit = perfect
:)!

This. Plus a perfect/superior fit sleeve.
A few cards should be slabbed authentic just for protection - but only in the strongest holder - BGS.
Otherwise, why pay a “slab tax”, or a silly premium, for a grade - because a flipper says that’s what you should do for them to buy your cards?

That's kind of what I was thinking too. I like the idea of being able to just put a sleeved card in them without having to use the special sleeve the 2nd generation comes with.

I prefer CS1’s to toploaders. I’ve got CS1’s from the late 90’s that are still crystal clean and top loaders start looking wrecked after a couple of years. My main personal collection is graded and in Apache cases. My type collection, vintage sets, and signed sets are in CS1’s and stored in BCW graded card boxes. I don’t generally display many cards (we have a pool, so we’re the defacto family party/meeting/hangout house and there is generally people passing through my house I don’t personally know on an average weekend. Mostly kids, but still.)
