So if we look down the road a few years when Fanatics licensing is off and running, do the prices/value of Topps cards go up? What about Bowman? Will we see a run and/or hoarding on Topps products with this announcement? What does everyone think? I am thinking about a buy and hold strategy. Risk/Reward like anything else in life I guess.

A flipper’s question.

As the hobby will be more tightly controlled, there will be fewer middlemen and possibilities for flippers to make profit.

Truly just an honest question to everyone. I've been looking at cards again the last couple weeks with my teenage son and doing a lot of reading. The prices are insane. He seems to have more of an interest now than when I bought some for him in 2013. In 2013 I bought a hobby box of topps update for $32 and now it sells for an insane amount on Ebay! I was shocked. I am not a flipper. I just like the hobby but the prices are so high. Was just wondering what everyone thought. I will check out some of the threads other people sent. Thank you.

Zero impact. This is being way overblown.

Zero impact.

No you wont get rich trying to buy topps cards because of the fanatics news. Its already factored in at this point.

Stick to a good job, stocks and real estate if you want to make money.

Stick to Topps cards if you enjoy the hobby of collecting trading cards.

If more people join the hobby over the next 5 years, that may put upward pressure on prices of cards...but the fanatics news will have no impact on older topps cards, boxes, etc.

if more people leave the hobby, that will have a downward effect on prices of sports cards, including Topps brand.

If only we had some fairly recent examples of this that we could look at...say, maybe from the last 20 years...regarding the same company...

Did they prices of Topps football or basketball cards go up when they lost their licenses for those?

Lots of unknowns and variable here OP as a lot can happen between now and when Fanatics takes over.

But long story short: NO, it is unlikely.

As others have said, check out the other threads which are much more expansive regarding this matter.

Prices didn't skyrocket as a direct result of them losing their license.

I get it, it's been crazy what prices have done. I was just responding in terms of the question posed by the OP.

Topps has a much deeper and richer history in baseball. I think people will look back fondly and want to continue buying Topps. Especially if Fanatics wants to go heavily digital.

It's not just short term holding that makes a seller a flipper. They have zero interest in the merchandise they're loading up on other than pure profit.

Stick to what you enjoy collecting if (1) you don't want to be lumped in with flippers and more importantly (2) you don't want to be stuck holding the bag.

True about the history. But the history of sports cards in general doesn't seem to suggest a high demand for products based solely on it being the last year they produced cards.

We can talk about what the sealed wax values might do for days, but that wasn't the question. Sealed wax prices go up as more and more gets opened, assuming there's still potential a money card could be in there. And as the rookies start turning into stars, the price of old wax goes up.

The same thing will happen to Topps as did the other manufacturers that left the game (Fleer, Donruss, UD, Pacific, Score). The less popular brands from those manufacturers will loose some interest but not much else will change.
