View Full Version : When one of your fav players has a bad autograph

Do you still collect autographs from a player you like if they have an awful autograph. I cant imagine paying that much money for this signature. Or would you just collect his regular cards and ignore the autographs.

Seems like a lot of players have bad autos. For me, if you can't read who signed it, it's not worth it.

Huge Braves fan and I don't have a single Acuna auto and no plans on buying one. I'll keep one if I pull one, but just can't pay for one (they do look slightly better this year). Albies is pretty rough too, but the few of him I have were super cheap.

It’s a bummer for sure. If it’s a player I really like, I’ll still grab a few certified auto cards, but I won’t bother with anything like a signed baseball from them or anything.

Just collect non auto cards. Instead of paying up for the auto pay up for a limited print run parallel or a short print variation or something.
I think auto cards are cool but it’s so diluted for every player these days I’d rather a /5 non auto than a comparatively valued auto.

I cannot do bad autos either.

90% of Ronald Acuna's autographs suck

You guys should see the ballpark autographs = freebies Acuna scribbles in person - those are atrocious.
His paid stuff is pretty nice unless he uses too light of a marker.

His 2017s on card was decent. Sticker ones weren't so good.

Looks like I’m in the minority —- I don’t care at all how a player signs his name / I do care very much that it’s authentic and not smeared or smudged

Same...mostly. I definitely PREFER if a player has a nice signature (Griffey, Rivera etc) but a lazy one isn't going to stop me. Most of them are distinct which is all that really matters at the end of the day (i.e. you can distinguish an Acuna auto from a Vlad Jr, etc)

It’s why I don’t have any Austin Martin chrome autos.
It also keeps me from buying autos of guys like Veen and James Wood.
A true bummer that Julio Rodriguez went the Prince route with his sig. I did get him to sign a ball with his full name, which is cool. But it definitely makes me not want to pick up a bowman auto.
Luciano same.
But I don’t buy for resale. So that would perhaps be less of a concern if I was just flippin

Meh, I don't think it would affect my collecting habits at all unless is was like a check mark or something.

If it's a player I like, I would still try to get one autograph even if it looks bad.
It's funny that someone bought up cursive writing. I don't think they teach that in schools anymore.

I think it’s more a product of the volume of signatures that guys are being asked to do, day in and day out, that leads to the sloppy/quick/check mark sigs.
I feel like if I had to sign my name 50x in a couple minutes, it would eventually get abbreviated.

It wasn't a dig on bad handwriting. I asked a teacher once about the cursive writing and that's what they told me, go figure.

This has restrained me from going in on Vladito as I would have otherwise.
Someone posted a video of him signing last time a thread like this popped up and it made me appreciate it a lot more. It's actually fairly well thought out. Pretty close to his dad's in some regards too.

Some players are born with bad autos, others have bad autos thrust upon them (because they sign so many and streamline it). George Springer has both.

Not baseball, but I think it applies - what a pity on an otherwise gorgeous 1/1 (which I nonetheless wish were mine, but alas...).

I sign a lot of stuff and my signature looks like crap but my handwriting is always getting compliments. I'd lean towards you being correct about it being them signing so many times. I personally don't care what their auto looks like as long as they were the one who signed the card/sticker.

That’s the worst I’ve ever seen.
Now, I wouldn’t object to anyone ridiculing this equally lackluster effort, but I also think the V/checkmark is kinda brilliant:

As others have said, I don't really believe it's a cursive thing. Don't they get paid for every sticker or card they sign? Why spend more time when you can maybe write the first letter in both your first/last names & accomplish the same thing? Regardless, it sucks so many of these guys won't take the time. I sure as hell would never pay big $ for an auto that looks like it could easily be forged (even if I knew it was authentic).

Freddie Freeman is my favorite active player and his autograph kinda sucks. Although he did add the “5” inscription to it in the last couple of years.

His full name is Jorge Luis Ona, that's what he wrote. It's simultaneously a bad auto but pretty cool that he included his middle name

I kind of like it actually. Fairly sharp and not sloppy at least. More initials than sig though so I get it. Definitely looks good with the 5.

it would kind of be a cool idea for unnumbered autos to be all simple and lame like these, and low numbered autos to be like crazy cursive script type hand writing. but i really don't think players care at all about what clecters want lol

Players autographs today have regressed enormously. Cursive is apparently a thing of the past.
The worst sigs I’ve seen are Camshttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220112/11207b06e4b686a31b468481e864ab2d.jpg

Most basketball players just use initials nowadays. Kinda annoying but I’ve scooped autos of my favorite players still. I guess I value authenticity solely
