View Full Version : Trout 1/1 - To Grade or Not to Grade?

I pulled the Trout image variation FoilFractor from All-Star Rookie Cup. I've never graded anything before but wanted to ask whether you think it's worth it. I'd love to hold the card, but I plan to sell it since I know it's worth more to someone else than it is to me. Not sure if I should grade it first. Thanks in advance!

That's probably a 9 at most. Why dump more money into grading fees?

No premium. In fact raw will probably cost more.

Exactly. However a slab does offer physical protection.

Back corners, specifically top right, show some white. Front corners could be a little soft, but hard to tell with the foil design.

I dont think its worth grading cause it's a 1/1 card and it's the only one in existence so that should give it plenty of value in my opinion. Whatever you decide to do it's still an amazing card!:)!

Yup...any hint of white, no chance for a 10 nowadays.

Grade it if it's mint. Auction it with a consigner, some of which only accept graded cards now.

You could always do a min grade on it, if you are in a position to possibly take a loss on the grading fee.

They also forgot several letters in the sentence about his rookie year performance - specifically, an i, an l and an l... which spells ill... maybe they were trying to tell us something about him? Either that he is in poor health or that he is really good (if they're into 90s slang)...
(Interestingly, no such errors on the base card. I don't have any parallels to check...)

Grade to protect, not grade to save money lol. Since there’s only 1 in the world, there’s no +/- value with it having a grade or not.

Very true. Beckett slabs provide the best protection, but I’m not paying a real premium for them or any other slab.

Who wants to bother to find space to store another slab and pay extra for shipping? Many collectors see slabs as a hassle.

That card is a 9.5 all day. Grade it for the security and condition guarantee if you’re selling.

Beautiful card, I’ve never sent a card in to be graded but would be tempted for security and potential ease of re-sell if that’s what you plan on doing with card.
Also, does anyone else see something going on with top right corner of the front?

For what it worth, and this is just my opinion/experience, but I pulled the Mike Trout 2021 Topps Series 2 1965 Redux Chrome Superfractor 1/1 and sold it raw recently for $1200 on eBay after consulting the preeminent Trout Facebook group, who generally believed it to be a $500 card. Mine was a legit Chrome, legit Superfractor on the checklist of a pack-pullable flagship product and the experts believed I should run with the $1200 and never look back. They said there's too many auto supers out there for regular 1/1s to crack a grand (and yours is from a online-only product), so I'm not sure grading at $100 on a card that's maybe $500 is worth it when it's a 1/1. I could be wrong and you might find the Trout collector that just has to have it (as I did), but hope that helps give you a general idea re: grading or not.

I would get it graded and then consign. BGS is probably your best option. Good luck.

This is how it works.
How many trout 1/1’s are there? 1,000’s
How many trout gem mints are there? Less
That’s why it’s worth grading a 1/1. It sets it apart from all the other 1/1’s

So would a Trout 1/1 with a crease in a top loader.

Yes, because shipping 1 more oz and taking up 1 more cubic inch of space is a real cost consideration.

Thanks, guys. This is helpful. I hadn't even considered that BGS might be a better option than PSA.

What is up with the huge number of missing letters and numbers on that card back???
His batting stats have also taken a huge hit from all of them

Zero chance I can find it, but there was another thread last year where the scanner processing was magically removing part of a cards serial number. It was only one number I believe, but it did it.

I went back and checked. The missing numbers are on the card. For some completely unknown reason, my scanner just skipped individual characters. It's very, very weird.

Super weird. I remember now it was a 1/1 that the / dissappeared before, maybe a Yordan card. People wondered if it fell off or was altered, but ended up just being the scanner removing it.

As someone who works with mass/volume conversions on a daily basis, I'm certain I understand. TOTAL volume of a PSA slab is about 4 1/4 cubic inches. A one touch is about 4 1/2 cubic inches. A toploader is somewhere around 1 cubic inch. So that extra cubic inch might be as much as 3! Whole new ballgame.

Yes it offers protection.
Not sure it offers much else.
Personally I would grade it.
