View Full Version : Was Tom Brady An OBVIOUS Draft Steal in 2000?

Maybe I worded the title incorrectly, but the last few days I've over and over heard a clip from a certain ESPN Radio host who mentioned how much of an atrocity it was that Brady lasted until the 6th round, and also how fans are supposedly smarter "decision makers" than the people actually running these NFL teams.

Funny how he doesn't say the same about a guy named Kurt Warner but then again he's a Patriots' homer and Brady buttkisser so what else is new. (I'm sure you can figure out who I'm talking about).

Below is Brady's draft profile from Pro Football Weekly. Looks like a good QB but not the guy he turned into:

How could those other teams not see Terrell Davis was going to become the best RB in the league and last til the 6th round? WHAT IDIOTS!

"Could make it in the right system but will not be for everyone."
This is sums it up about Mr. Brady for me, I don't think he would of made it anywhere else but with Belichick and the Pats. If he would of been taken higher and be a starter right away, I don't even know if he would have lasted any place else.

It kills me when i see people spout off like this around NFL Draft time

sure there are some talentedpeople never drafted or drafted late..but there are reasons

doesnt mean they dont have the abilityto be good in the future..but seriously that daft was horrible for QBs.

-Chad Pennington was a beast at Marshall, him and Moss set records..he led them to undefeated senior season and was 5th in Heisman voting. Would you really take Brady over Pennington at this point? Yeah knowing what you know now you would, but not with those credentials

-even Chris Redman was setting NCAA records his senior year in college...Tee Martin took over for UT after Manning and led them to the National title, and another BCS bowl game the next season as well as holding a 7-1 record over Sec perennials Goergia, Auburn,Alabama and Florida

the only questionable picks were Carmazzi and Wynn...i wouldve taken everybody else ahead of Brady at the time given their accomplishments in NCAA at the time

Have you seen the photos of Brady at the combine? He looked like a twig.

These scouts are wowed by numbers(stats) and the combine, physical specimens, they are all good athletes, so they try to see who has the tools and physical ability to be great with lots of upside. They probably thought there were 30 Tom Bradys coming out of school that year. Anyone who says now that it was an atrocity is just being a monday morning quarterback. He did not stand out.

You would have a better chance of evaluating a class of kindergartners and telling who would be a lawyer or a doctor than you do of evaluating a college QB and picking out the future Hall of Fame QB.

he was thin and had very little experience due to griese and whatshisface taking snaps ahead of him, if you do some readings he actually considered leaving michigan at one point...

Brady wasn't ready to come out and start . He could of gotten drafted earlier but so could plenty of other players.

Aaron Rodgers Was a sure top 5-10 pick ended up going 24

Joe Montana was drafted late

Shoot Look at WR last yr Mike williams had some school issues so it dropped him from the 1st round to 4th round.
There has been and always will be tons of players that get picked to high or go real low that should of went higher.

Brady wasn't even the best QB on his team in New England. It was just pure luck that he was able to get on the field. Bledsoe was still a quality QB and the team was pretty good at the time. I'm not saying that Bledsoe would have taken the Pats to the SuperBowl but he was playing pretty good at the time.

This is true. I watched him play at MI and then I don't think anyone thought he would turn out like he did.

I think as far as QBs go, it's better to be drafted late to a good team and learn the system for a few years before getting the starting nod. Most QBs that gets drafted in the 1st rounds and get put in the starting position right away have too much pressure from the start to make the team better. It's like you just learn how to surf in man made waves then be expected to be the best in real competitions with thousands of fans waiting to cheer for you if you win or tear you to death if you fail.

I love Brady and all, but he has definitely benefited from a damn good OL most of his career. Not great rb's and wr's over the years, but the line has been pretty steady. Could he have gone higher from what he did at michigan? Probably, but he didn't so it doesn't really matter what anyone says.

Close to the same thing with sanchez, would he be as successful without a great line and running game? Perhaps, but I doubt it.
