Hey guys. I have a few questions about the Jordan autos from 96 SPX. Am I correct in saying that there were two, one pack pulled and the other a redemption card where the redemption card was pack pulled? Further is the one that was a redemption card the auto that was numbered to /250?
Does anyone have any thoughts on how well the ink has held up on these cards?
Lastly, I see lots of 1996 SPX for sale on ebay. Is this because they cards stick together or there are surface issues due to them being boxed for so long? I'm surprised at how readily available they are. Thanks!

I believe the cards were one per pack back then, so most issues would be mfg related.
Can't remember if there were 2 different types of Jordan autos or if they were only redemption. I think there was a Penny Hardaway auto card too that year.
Hi, No auto were in pack... Redemption card was for the unnumbered auto base card (sticker beginning with BAD or BAC)... All other autos were sold through UD website (later I think) or signed at camp... I scanned some useful articles here (click on the info logo below the card) : http://imhcollection.com/45jordan.html
None of the Jordan or Penny autos were inserted in packs.
Here is the redemption/trade card.

The non Numbered ones were redemption and the Record Breaker numbered to /250 were sold directly through Upper Deck Authenticated.
These cards are notorious for having bubbled autos but there are very clean ones out there still. Extremely beautiful cards and one of the earliest autos ever.

Thanks for this... in terms of pricing, obviously I've looked at PSA's info but how are these two cards perceived differently in the market? Also are there any estimates on how many of non numbered cards there are in existence?

The Jordan Trade card was inserted one every 34560 packs.
The Penny Trade card was inserted one every 1345 packs.
https://www.beckett.com/basketball/1996/spx/
The back of the Trade card mentions that the estimated total value of the auto cards is $450,000. It also mentions that each Jordan is card is valued at $500 and each Penny at $150.
500x + 150y = 450,000
Y= 25.7x (theres 25.7 times as many Pennys as Jordans.
500x + 25.7x(150) = 450,000
X = 103
This means there were approximately 100 Jordan Trade cards inserted into 1996 SPx. How many were redeemed? Thats anyone guess. Id say roughly 50-75 of the NNO auto exist.

This is very good information! I did not know this other than the BAD and BAC certification prefix as pack inserted

I know the record breaker auto #/250 could be purchased at Service Merchandise stores (now defunct, were in malls in the 90’s).

Also of importance, I believe any trade cards For the Jordan that were to show up for sale would sell in the thousands of dollars. True you can't hit a live auto but I would be thrilled to have even the trade card, Especially one of this significance.

Just to add my two cents after doing a mountain of research on the card a few years ago.*
- The redemption copy came with a COA matching the number on the (oval) hologram on the back of the signed card:
https://live.staticflickr.com/4530/38447082252_709e3f7c80.jpg
That COA is the size of a standard trading card. Signed copies that people would get from the flight camp had a much larger, folded COA. The type you would get when purchasing a UDA item. Different prefix for the hologram serial number too (not "BAC" or "BAD"), as mentioned above.
- There are "early" and "late" runs of the base card itself, with different text on the back. The "early" version was apparently made during the season ("Closing in on the end of the regular season, the Bulls own the best record in the league."), with the "late" version referring to the results of the regular season. I don't recall whether there were signed versions of both and, if so, what the availability is of each. I would consider the "early" version to be more desirable, but who knows if the availability bears that out.
- I seem to recall a $40k sale of a pack-inserted version last year on some auction site (not ebay). I do not recall the condition, but the condition would be a factor in the price, of course. Either way, in my biased opinion, this one is undervalued compared to other MJ autos out there, probably because there is so much confusion and misinformation out there.
*I own one, which is not available.

Interesting. Id love to see photos of the back from different versions.

You can see the "early" version of the text on the back of the base card in this listing:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/165398518085?hash=item2682851945:g:S-QAAOSw4sRh0hAa
The "late" version is very easy to find.
There was a promotional folder for 1996 SPX available that included copies of the MJ and Penny Hardaway base cards. I wonder whether the "early" version is the promo card, while the "late" version was the only one that was pack-inserted (rather than there being two versions inserted into packs over time). Easy enough for somebody with one of the folders to pop the MJ card off the folder and take a look.
Perhaps only the promo versions (with the "early" version of the text on the back) were signed to fulfill the redemptions? Were there 100 copies signed at the same time (seems logical enough), with them all finding their way into the wild even though all 100 redemption cards were not redeemed (seems more likely than the extras being destroyed)? Who the heck knows?

Thanks. Yeah, just found this thread from a while back. They discussed the different versions briefly.

Thanks all for this information. This is all really interesting. Hard for me to understand why these cards aren't valued higher.

If memory serves, an old Beckett article stated that there were two different signings for the NNO Auto: the BAC series were signed during the 1996 All-Star Break and the BAD series were signed after the season.
The BAD series seem to outnumber the BAC series.
