Per Adam Schefter
Dwayne Haskins, a standout at Ohio State before struggling to catch on with Washington and Pittsburgh in the NFL, died this morning when he got hit by a car in South Florida, per his agent Cedric Saunders. Haskins would have turned 25 years old on May 3.

Unconfirmed, but local news is reporting that a man of Haskins' age was struck and killed by a dump truck at the same time/location. The man (possibly Haskins) had pulled over—due to either car trouble or a minor accident—and gotten out of the car when he was clipped by the large truck.
Either way, Haskins had been in Florida attending a special offseason QB practice that Mitch Trubisky had called. Haskins was there with the other Steelers QBs and a few of the skill players.

Economic freedom means you are free to personally profit off tragedies.
Freedom of speech means others are free to call you a death merchant and express their disgust.
That's really all that needs to be said.

Well I don’t own any Haskins cards to sell, so I’m not much of a death merchant. And if I did, I could care less what someone that doesn’t have access to my life or bank account would call me. Life is too short to worry about what others think.

I feel the same way. Now if you’re selling pictures of his dead body or stealing all of his s*** and squatting in his house like Demaryius Thomas’ “friends” were when he died now that’s a totally different story.
Now I’ve always wondered about buyers in a situation like this. It has to be an emotional “I’ve gotta have it now!!!” type of mentality because Haskins cards will go back down to what they were yesterday or even lower in a few weeks time.

Maybe listing and selling his cards on eBay is a celebration of his life and achievements. That's what i would want if i was a professional athlete and i passed away unexpectedly.
I don't understand why so many look at this in a negative way.
And of course, I also think it is a tragedy for anyone to lose their life especially at such a young age.

We were literally in an LCS in Columbus (my kid is getting into it) when the news hit… it was kind of surreal at the store honestly
Every kid ran to the Ohio State section. Not because they wanted to flip something. They wanted a Haskins card
Is that eBay? No… it’s flippers

The investment spike for Haskins will be short term and then his cards will decline to near commons prices.
Haskins never did anything in the NFL, that holds no long term value for his cards.
Hank Aaron and other recent deaths of legends have a resume that will be followed for generations.
PS if anybody thinks they are making blood money of a Haskins sale then donate the money to Unicef or the Red Cross as people in the Ukraine could use the world's help right now.

Is it a highway with stoplights and he was jaywalking or like a 6 lane interstate?
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) said the incident occurred at about 6:30 a.m. on April 9 when the 24-year-old Haskins was trying to cross a highway on foot in Broward County, NBC News reported.
FHP Lieutenant Indiana Miranda said in an email that the National Football League (NFL) player was walking on “a limited access facility for unknown reasons” and tried to cross the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 while traffic was coming.

There is nothing wrong with this line of thinking. Gil Brandt just said what some folks probably thought but are to scared to say. We live in an incredibly soft society now. There are more people upset over a 90 yr old with no filter and the way a sports reporter phrased a Tweet then they are about a very young man losing his life. Either way, sad and tragic day. To the people clutching at their pearls over Schefter's tweet.... I took it as him reminding casual and semi-casual fans of who Haskins was, what teams he had played for, that he was still in the league and how he got there.
No one would be complaining at that description of Haskins if he were still alive... but he's dead, so it's incorrect or wrong to mention his career.... in a sports journalist tweet? His intent wasn't to crap on the guy. He was describing him and where people would know the name from. No one was following Haskins career on a large scale anymore, so he brought them up to speed. He also complimented his play at OSU. What's the problem with what he said?

I didn't say he is random at all? I grasp his popularity. God help me? My friend.. Schefter at worst was insensitive, at best accurate. I mean Haskins was struggling to find a spot, a major bust with highly public off-field issues. Schefter accidentally was honest and he tried to revise it because people like you reminded him it was in poor taste to tell the truth and Schefter is a bitch like that.

Adam Schefter threw that comment in there for a reason. If you don’t know that reason you don’t know his history.
It’s not about people “being soft.” It’s about an unneeded comment by a professional sportswriter. I think the difference comes down to throwing it in a tweet vs adding it in an actual article. The bum decided to waste space on it in his tweet. And he deleted it probably knowing he’d be called a “racist.” Not because it was “ill timed.”
The complete facts haven’t even been released in regards to this situation either...let’s wait as we always should.

I had the opportunity to Dwayne at a few charity events after he joined the Steelers. He was great with the fans & all of his fellow teammates appeared to love him. It seemed like every event there were Steelers players involved he was there and happy as could be.
I’ve found that more times than not the people who cry about everyone being offended, soft, crybabies, woke, snowflakes & whatever other buzzword they come up with are generally dinosaurs who are just mad that there are consequences when they spout off any tone-def, racist, misogynistic or homophobic thought that pops into their head.
If Schefter wants the accolades that come with being the mouthpiece for the NFL then he gets to eat his #@#@#@#@ when he says something stupid. It was an unnecessary dig at the worst time & somebody in his position should’ve known better.

Schefter deletes the tweet and posts a new one that is more tasteful.

BTW... if Schefter apologized yesterday, he takes the story off of Haskins. So if he's going to, it actually makes more sense to give it a day or two.

How often do initial reports turn out to be wrong? Let’s start with over/under 50%? Not saying the initial reports to this incident are not factual, just pointing out that people should wait on ALL of the facts.

It's because Blowout isn't really that anonymous.
If you ever buy/trade a card from someone here or through their linked eBay, you're going to be privy to their identity. Plus many members here know each other in real life and say hey at card shows and events.

Sorry. I want to know what happened. My team drafted him. And I'm curious as to what led to his sudden death. Clearly his dad is a nut. And with that comes a lot of pain. Competing at that level can also tack on pressure. So to read that he had booze and drugs in his system isn't surprising.

Everyone had to have known he was impaired somehow. People don't just go from one side of an interstate to another because they "need gas". There are other avenues to "Get Gas".... AAA, Your insurance company, or Florida's road rangers that are dispatched to broken down vehicles(it is a AAA service that Florida provides) All of Florida's interstates have cameras and FDOT watches them. I was actually on 595 right after his death, and anyone would be an absolute moron to cross that road at anytime of the day.

I'm no saint, am far from a perfect person. I don't usually judge or cast stones...not in my nature. That all said, Haskins is a grade A POS. Drunk/high, likely with a side chick, endangering the lives of countless others by driving on the interstate. Sounds like an entitled athlete who didn't give two Sh!ts about ANYONE but himself. Like most, I felt horrible for him and his family when this happened. Now that the truth is out, screw him.
You have a really weird way of not judging or casting stones.

Anyone that posts on Blowout should be required to go to counseling once a month. Or more. This place is my counseling.
I see how many here are freaking nuts and always feel much better about myself.

With Haskins drunk and on drugs. Likely means the driver of the truck won't be charged and the family won't have anything to go on to try to sue the driver.

I laugh every time i see Gun stats in Japan. This yearly stat of Japan is less than most days in the city i live in now.
"The National Police Agency announced that in 2017 there were only 22 shooting crimes throughout Japan. These are defined as cases where people with firearms cause death, injury, or property damage, but exclude accidents and suicide. Members of organized crime syndicates were the perpetrators in 13 of the crimes. Three people were killed and five injured."

Thats because Japan actually punishes their criminals instead of letting violent people out time and time again. When you let someone out after their 3rd armed robbery in a 5 year period, and think they are going to change, its insanity. When you nolle pross the majority of gun charges, and plea shootings down to 2nd degree assault, you get more crime. Japan dont play that. Not to mention the japanese people as a whole still understand and practice what respect is. Theft in Japan gets you 10 years of hard labor. Here, we just watch it happen and post it in tik tok

There are a lot of countries that don't play. Unfortunately, America is not one of those countries.

And they don’t get the fact that reason people jumped on them is because they used the deaths of a bunch of school kids in a lonely, pathetic attempt to start a gun control debate on a DWAYNE HASKINS thread on a sports card forum that no one else was looking to have.
People, please do not humor this thoughtless, trolling jackal.

another reason,
The Japanese prison is run like a military boot camp. They have a strict schedule for inmates. Once a inmate gets out , he never wants to return. Check out the videos on Youtube. Funny stuff:)!

Suing pretty much everyone in a conspiracy theory lawsuit. Also suing the dump truck driver saying his negligent acts lead to his death? Or maybe Haskins was stoned and it's his own fault he walked out in front of a dump truck on a highway. SMH sounds like a money grab lawsuit.

This is the best part:
"The lawsuit also alleges negligence by the individual owner of the 1994 Kenworth truck, the trucking company, the Florida Department of Transportation, the rental car company and the contractor that provides signage along I-595."
Guess there should have been more signs to tell people not to walk across 6-8 lanes of traffic?

"The Florida Highway Patrol Traffic Homicide Report shows that Dwayne was only feet away from making it safely across the roadway when he was struck and killed by an old dump truck," Ellsley said in the statement. "... Many questions remain as to why the truck driver did not avoid hitting Dwayne given the highly visible activity in the area before the impact and the fact that the other drivers did not hit Dwayne."
Because you know drivers are expected to watch out for people crossing the highway on foot and not supposed to be watching traffic.

"Haskins was walking on the westbound side of I-595 when he entered into the travel lanes and into the path of the dump truck, which was traveling in the center lane..."

I expect drivers to watch for any/all potential obstacles and obstructions in the road at all times. Drivers Ed 101.

Being 12+ feet* away is technically still "only feet away".
*Hwy lane is defined as 12 feet in width.

Thing is semi's don't stop on a dime and can't move easy. Even if he saw Haskins last second likely nothing he can do.
Haskins decided to play human frogger on the highway and lost.
