View Full Version : Does anyone store their collection on COMC?

Curious if anyone currently does this?

I saw the idea of it being sold as a way to keep cards in one place, able to view anytime and anywhere, and the ability to list for sale almost instantly, either thru auction or just list BIN COMC. The idea intrigued me somewhat. Sort of a cross between physical and digital? Able to see live COMC going rate at least if others are listed for sale. Obviously would be expensive to send in and if you changed your mind you’re going to be charged to ship back out.

My biggest concern would be if something happened to those cards while in their possession, how would value be accessed?

Also, some cards just don’t look good scanned. And it’s nice having cards in person. But for me, they stay boxed up and only come out a couple times a year honestly.

That was the original idea with COMC, "Check Out My Cards". Originally, it was a showcase for cards which the owner of the site had purchased on eBay, but then he opened it up to others.

I wouldn't keep my personal collection of items that I am never, ever, ever, ever going to sell on COMC. I don't think I would keep anything on the site over $50 or so without a realistic chance that someone, someday might buy the card.

However, I do consider the items I have on COMC to be part of my collection. It's just an open and active collection where people can buy items and I can use some of the proceeds to buy other items.

One nice aspect of COMC is that the images never go away. So, even for cards that I might have acquired 30 years ago, and then sold on COMC 10 or 12 years ago, I can still see scans of the items.

There's a part of my brain which feels that if I once owned an item, it's as good as if I still own the item. Even better, since someone else is able to enjoy owning the item as well. But if you're someone who feels pain, loss and FOMO over items which you once sold, then COMC might not work out well for displaying personal items.

It is nice, however, to be able to look at my cards by year, or set, or player, or certain attributes. But I would recommend doing what you are suggesting if you have no intention of actually selling any of the items.

When you submit items to COMC, you declare a value of some sort. This is probably used as some baseline insurance value in the case of a catastrophic loss.

You might also be able to work with COMC to add additional insurance through your homeowner's policy, though I've never actually done this myself. A few years back, there was some thread about COMC's insurance and they indicated a willingness to do this.

In general, though, I wouldn't give anything to COMC that you wouldn't give to a friend to sell for you in a handshake deal, and I would be mentally prepared for the nonzero chance that the entire port could be lost in a volcano eruption or something. If something like that happened, you would probably technically be a creditor of some sort, but there would be a long line and you wouldn't be at the front of it.

If it's a single item issue, such as a card getting lost or damaged in the warehouse, they're usually pretty good at coming up with a reasonable solution. Often this is triggered when the item sells, or is returned by a buyer. Usually, if it's their fault, they'll eat it. But sometimes they'll make you eat it if they retroactively decide that an item you submitted was altered or something.

Thanks for the detailed responses.

I feel like if they had a "my collection" section similar to "My Port" that would be nice for something like this. "My Port" displays nicely, but only shows items you currently have for sale. I don't see a way to display items not for sale like you can on regular searches.

Or if there was just a way to download the card information into an Excel spreadsheet, which right now I believe the only way is for purchase or sales history. But no way for items in your current inventory.

You can download items currently in your inventory with the Bulk Pricing Tool (or whatever they call it). Control A to select all items, Control C to copy it onto your clipboard. Then, in an Excel worksheet, Control V to paste.

You can look at items you submitted by batch if you go to your submission history. You can look at items you had shipped if you go to your shipment history. You can look at items you sold by digging through your sales history.

Each pic on the site has a link which you can copy and paste into some sort of spreadsheet, or onto some sort of webpage.

It isn't as user friendly as looking at your current items which are for sale, but it's at least on par with digging through random boxes in your garage.

I like using COMC for organizing. Like say I’m going for a rainbow of a card, I can see all the little check marks for the ones I own. Just wish they’d do something basic like allowing you to also input your own check marks from your at home collection so you knew everything you had easily and then I’d probably be more likely to ship home and not worry about buying the same thing twice.

This is one of the most civil succinct informative threads that I have ever stumbled upon on here.

So, of course, I immediately feel a need to derail it.

I have been trying for years to get them to add a feature that you can hide/ignore/mark cards you have. So you do not have to look through all of them to find a card you need. Yes there is a watch list but again if you have a lot of cards that you want plus all the new cards being added every day.

I would love some sort of Checklist app (for phone or desktop) where you could indicate haves, wants, and also automatically populate your COMC port. Ideally, you would be able to see how many of a given card on your wantlist are in stock, and what the lowest price for those cards are.

One problem with COMC's wantlist feature is that it follows the card, and not the bucket the card is in. If you watch a card at $2, and someone buys it, it disappears from your wantlist, even if there are 50 other copies in stock. If a flipper buys it and reprices it for $5, it shows in your wantlist as $5. If someone lists another copy for $1, you won't see it. If someone has a 75% off sale and now their copy is 50 cents, you won't see it.

If someone has some computer skills, they might consider building an app like this and then trying to pitch it to COMC. It would probably take less time than waiting for COMC to develop their own app.

The bold part is not true. It does not disappears It shows up as Not For Sale unless a flipper gets it and reprices it then it shows up at the new price. You have to remove it from your watch list. Then replace it with the next one (if there is one)
I have also asked for the next best thing with the Watch List. Be able to sort them in better ways. Now all you can sort them is by SRP (who cares about that) Ask Price (highest to lowest or lowest to highest) I use that. On Sale ( who cards about that you just want to know the price) Started watching ( does that really matter?)

More helpful if it was by players or sets maybe years or brands.
Yes it would be better is it t follows the bucket the card is in vs the card.

Over the years I have figured they are more interested in the sellers then the buyers when it comes to making changes. Just do not understand that.
