For thick cards, would you rather have a grade of PSA 8 or a BGS 9 both are AUTO 10.

BGS 9, easy question

BGS 9. Hands down. Has the PSA pump really gotten this bad that this is even a question?

Personally, I love the PSA pump because it’s allowed me (and will continue to allow me) to pick-up BGS graded PC cards for a discount.

BGS has been under fire lately. Recent surveys shows that they have been outgained by SGC and HGA which is pretty crazy. SGC and HGA totally sucks. I have been looking at some recent comps and PSA 8 has been on the same range of the BGS 9s already or even higher. So I'm just trying to gain some inputs regarding this matter for my next purchase.

The pump is too true, but the top high end collectors are all shifting to psa, whether this is the influence of nat or not, they will determine the value of the slabs. That’s the way it way go

You obviously don’t know a lot of high-end collectors. There are many who religiously stand by BGS. Not everyone is a sheep on IG.

But PSA has been the king of grading sports cards from the very beginning. They never went down to no. 2. They always stood their ground and stay atop in the grading industry for so many years now.

Lots of newbies here. BGS was #1 in basketball for many years. I use and like both companies, but let’s slow down on the bad info dump.

That is for basketball alone but not for Baseball and Football.

But considering this is a basketball forum, yes you are correct.

That’s not true. Over a decade plus I would say modern Baseball and Football were all BGS all the time. Much like PSA is now.

So from what I heard traditionally BGS could be gamed because centering was valued as just one of four elements, so you could get like a 60-40 9.5. But then PSA seems to give out random 10s so who knows?

ur feelings hurt or something? What’s this got to do with me knowing high end collectors or not? First of all, I don’t need to know them personally or be friends with any of them. I am just speaking from observation, nat, josh, shyne150 and etc boosting PSA on IG, you like it or not, psa 10 is selling for double bgs 9.5 and it was never like that. So you would rather have ur card in a bgs 9.5 if it can crossover to psa 10? Yeh right, case closed

PSA has established itself as the industry leader, and understandably outsells similarly graded slabs by the other TPG’s. That being said, I would pay more for a mint card than a near-mint card, and I suspect most would do the same.

There are a few instances where PSA slabs logically outsell higher graded BGS slabs. Vintage comes to mind because BVG sucks, and because of PSA’s registry. Another example are cards like the 93 SP Jeter, where PSA has a reputation for being far tougher with grades.

Ok, Very true then. I get you. :)

It does amaze me the sheep mentality, but maybe it shouldn't/ For all the newbs, Yes BGS was #1 for a long time. The PSA registry really stated the PSA rise, then Covid and Influencer/Pumper Mania really took over and that's where we're at today.

Full Disclosure I probably like the BGS slab more, but if you look in my collection I have more PSA cards because I used to put together Finest and Chrome Graded sets, and guess what PSA was cheaper to pick up. HAHA True Story.

It's all about ROI and currently, that's PSA, but will it always be?? IDK. but any of these pumpers would jump ship in a heartbeat and jump on whatever bandwagon got them the most dollar bills $$.

Regardless of PSA / BGS status in the industry, the 9 is the objectively better card, outlier examples of bad grading not withstanding. Buy the better card, and if you really want it in a PSA case you have a great shot at a PSA 9 when you cross it over.

My feelings hurt? From the guy who had an emotional meltdown over “Goldins” auctions. lmao

You stated “the top high end collectors are all shifting to psa” which is simply not true and shows you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Hope you feel better.

I do the same thing when I have a PSA 9 and a PSA 10. I take whatever card looks better to me. Or, I might have a friend take a look after I cover the grades. If the PSA 8 looked better to me than the BGS 9 I would take that card.

If you look at the pop reports for big cards, especially in baseball, in the 2012-2018 time frame it's tons of BGS. Stuff like 2016 Tatis/Soto BCAs and the like, they are predominantly in BGS 9.5s, not PSA 10s and 9s. But I personally hate BGS slabs and am trying to swear off buying them.

BGS 9 > PSA 8, Okay.

Then which one would be valued higher between BGS 9 and PSA 8.5 ?
And between BGS 8.5 and PSA 8?

And between BGS 8.5 and PSA 8?

I haven’t followed value breakdowns of each in quite some time, and I know sub grades are important to consider.

With that said, BGS 8.5 is generally the better card (compared to PSA 8) in my book. Same goes with BGS 9 (over PSA 8.5). BGS 9.5 over PSA 9. Etc.

Bgs 9 for sure.

People used to always send cards with crappy quality autographs to psa just to avoid the auto grade for bgs.

Psa did a horrific job detecting trimming issues as well.

This is what wrong with the hobby. There’s nothing special about this PSA slab. It’s a case. You can change it out if you want.

Blatant lie.

As for OP, probably BGS 9.
