I've never collected a player when he debuted, but as a huge Neemias Queta fan, my first compatriot in the NBA, I couldn't resist and I started getting some of his cards as soon as they were available.

Now I'm at a point where I have the basic ones and the ones I want are way overpriced. I know most of these cards will eventually be $1 cards or less, I'm just wondering how long I'll have to wait.

So for those who collect scrub players, what's the normal cycle like for their cards to become available for really low prices?

Generalizing, but the majority of rookies that aren’t top tier prospects will drop in their second year, and keep dropping. A few will have an uptick if they weren’t hyped out of the gate and start playing exceptionally well, but in general…your Dario Saric, Kris Dunn, Coby White, etc and lesser rookies cool off.

You’ll likely never get anything for $1 with shipping and tax.

The problem is that most scrubs aren’t even worth the time to sell so unless you find them in a dollar box at a shop or show the answer to your question is probably never

I normally pick them up on comc, lots of scrubs there.

I don’t go on COMC so I wouldn’t know but I guess it depends on what you want. I’m sure you can get plenty of Prizm base and low end inserts and color and stuff for $1.

By 4th year if a guy hasn't produced, even as a top pick, usually he's a "common" now. But there's a steep drop off in the 3rd year typically do. A guy has to show signs by then of producing.

How about if you have the ultra rare issues of the player? Those should hold value, but it probably depends on which set and whether collectors exist for it. In this, inserts would maybe hold more value than the actual rookie cards. For example, I am sure there are My House or Slam or Molten Metal completists.

Except on COMC.

I recently bought an Anthony Randolph 08/09 Bowman Chrome Refractor Auto /50 for less than $2 for my Warriors PC so that's a 14 year wait. But I was fine with potentially never getting that card if it wasn't at a rock bottom price.

With the price of wax today, I think more sellers are fishing for unreasonably high prices, including on things like non-desirable parallels of scrubs, to make themselves feel better about ripping wax at these crazy buy-ins. And they probably get just enough sales to make it worthwhile to keep prices high.

Since you use COMC, I'd watchlist every copy of a Queta card you want and check and sort your watchlist by active sales often. And of course, hit up promos like Black Friday and see if current Queta's listed at Cade and Jalen prices get major slashes since that's a time when a lot of sellers who list things and forget about their prices might make some reasonable adjustments.

But if you're set on rock bottom prices, be prepared to wait years, especially with sellers who send stuff in and then forget about their cards.

I’ve found that gold prizms are rarely cheap. I’ve lucked into a few for 10-20 for players that I PCthat many would consider scrubs. Tried to get a Danny green and Tyler hansbrough ‘13 gold prizm that both ended up over $100 the other day. Sometimes I’ll luck into some national treasures or exquisite RPAs in the 10-30 range.

I’ve watched Coby White and Cam Johnson cards trade for crazy high prices while rookie autos, rpas and low numbered inserts for ray Felton and Marvin Williams go for a fraction of the price even though they had pretty good, long careers. If it’s a young player you are after play the long game and wait and eventually their cards can be obtained at decent prices

Sportslots is a largely forgotten resource for low end stuff. Here is the link
