View Full Version : The all-time video game starting five the fans most want to see

I'm not talking about the all-time starting five of something like:
Magic, Michael, Larry, LeBron, Russell
(the reserves include Wilt, Timmy, Kareem, Kobe, Steph, Shaq)
I'm talking the most popular starting five, in rough order of popularity, of:
Michael, LeBron, Kobe, Steph, Luka
(reserves include Giannis and, uh . . .)
The fans most want to see a video-game simulation of the latter. You put Bron at the 5, and for his rebounding skills I guess you put Luka at the 4, MJ/Kobe at the 2/3, Steph at point. But basically it's chock full of guards, the fans really like guards. This popularity-driven starting five has some excellent defenders in MJ, Kobe and Bron.
Let's say you put the Popular starting five in a video-game simulation against:
Magic, Jerry, Larry, Timmy, Russell
A couple players that can shoot lights-out from 3-land, the consensus greatest PG ever to distribute, and all-time defensive bigs and legendary Winners
Who wins the most over 10,000 simulations of this matchup? You have to simulate Russell's BBIQ for sure, however you do that.
I really just don't know.
The fans wanna see the MJ team win, of course. But their opponents look like a tough-af assignment, one that whoever is the Bill James of basketball might very well pick. Do you really want to go up against Bill Russell? Do you really want to go up against MJ-plus-Bron, though. Bron at the 5 has to defend Russell, say. Who defends Timmy then? Think all this through, please.

I think Luka would be better than Steph at the point because of his vision height and passing ability. As well as his ability to methodically break down defenses. Though he's evolved his game since the end of last year into playing out of the post as well off the ball. Steph i think would be a better choice at shooting guard with them both on the court together in that situation though. He can shoot off the ball better and is constantly moving. Luka is almost always going to find the open man and make the right read. Steph would definitely be their sniper though that's for sure. Didn't give too much thought about where the others would fit in.
That's all i got.

The PG has to bring up the ball and get past the guy who's guarding you. Luka has an elite first step (best in the game) to get by people and when the distance to the basket isn't more than 24 feet the first step is critical, not so much top speed. A PG needs top speed; if you don't have top speed you can't move down the court and the person can recover and set and edge back.
Luka is the last person I want bringing the ball down the court.

I honestly couldn't tell if this was meant to be a joke or not.
But if it wasn't...

Video game? I wanna see someone cover a team of: Iverson, Barry, Pippen, Duncan, and Hakeem. Iverson in today's game with no hand-checking, faster tempo than 90s-00s, and illegal defense calls would put up 40+ a night on anyone.
My team is really, really, really good on defense. And will fastbreak you into oblivion.

Video game?
Steph, Reggie, Glen Rice, KG, Shaq
Bench: Kerr, Legler, Mitch Richmond, Dennis Scott, Sam Perkins, Manute Bol, Boban
All of you are toast. You won't survive the 3 point barrage and the shot block of Shaq, Bol, Boban.
Give me my medals!

Was actually incredible at the time. Forgot it came out so early, must’ve been in the first run of PS1 games. Longbox game cases are as funny to look back on as the announcer.

That looks pretty high tech. I'll go old school. Does anyone else remember Double Dribble? Best basketball game out at the time (1986 on NES i believe)

Then there was also Jordan vs Bird One on One on commodore 64 which im pretty sure every smart phone today is more powerful than. I believe there was an even earlier version of One on One, Dr J vs Bird.
