View Full Version : Unpopular opinion...I've become a big fan of breaks!

I got back into the hobby a couple of years ago so this breaking thing is new to me. I avoided it for a long time. But the last month I have bought into a lot of breaks on ebay. Up until then I had bought a couple of cheap hobby boxes for personal rips and a bunch of blasters and gotten maybe 1-2 cards I cared about. My collecting focus for major sports is 100% on the teams I'm a fan of so basically any other card is useless to me and if I pulled anything good I just sell it on ebay or trade it with people here. But I figured I would give some team breaks a shot since I would just be getting cards from teams I collect and not have a bunch of other cards taking up space that I need to move. I've been trying to stick to reasonable priced breaks like $15-20 spots. But that allows me to buy into hobby boxes instead of retail and I guess I've had good luck because I've hit autos in 1/3 of breaks or more and some numbered and lots of color. I'm a Boston fan so not much of high value in current checklists but I did get a Wade Boggs Stadium Club on card auto along with Kutter Crawford auto in the same break which cost me about $15 so I consider that a bargain. I also found that I really enjoy watching the breaks. Some breakers are annoying but most are cool. I'm obviously buying from smaller breakers not the huge ones that get the most hate. And I realize if I was chasing teams with big rookies prices would be higher and return probably wouldn't be as good (although every case break I've been in seems to hit multiple good J Rod and Wanders so maybe those spots are worth the money). Anyway, I had a bad impression of breaks from this forum but if you are buying into the right products at the right price it doesn't seem that bad and getting access to a whole hobby case or even 2-4 boxes of a product that I would never pay the price of single box myself makes sense. I'm sure perspectives are different from people who have been around a while and remember the good old days before pandemic when boxes were cheap but all I know are expensive hobby boxes.

I think team or player breaks for people into strictly collecting teams or player can make a lot sense for certain people. I’m all for finding your niche and every avenue available to scratch that niche- in the most cost sensible way you can find.
I tried a few(like 3) breaks in the past, targeting cheaper RCs in products I like. Always struggled to find concise recap video portion and never hit anything cool so I just moved on. I could definitely see where getting a secondary wax dopamine hit while only actually purchasing cards you collect would have its merits if priced appropriately.

Bowman Draft is a group break product for sure. Of course you have to be wise to the players you want to collect. It's much more enjoyable to spend $500 on 100 cases of a select prospect than 1 box. Of course you may have to compete for specific players

So Ive been in and out of the hobby since around 2006.
I've joined literally 6 or 7 breaks over the last 10 years. I either broke my own boxes or just bought singles since I've entered the hobby. Over the last two weeks, I've joined two breaks and managed to hit 4 cards...and this one was hit tonight (1/1 Gaylord Perry Patch)

The reason why I joined these breaks really is because I would never shell out $600 for a box of NT. For $80 I was able to have a chance at one team over 8 boxes and $50 for a case of FOTL. Managed to get this patch and a Marichal Auto /49 for my PC.

Definitely won't be joining many more breaks, but I think replacing it with paying the crazy prices for boxes isn't too shabby.

That's a really nice card. I've been trying to buy into Red Sox NT breaks but they're selling for over $100 for a case break. I don't like spending that much for a break where I may walk away empty handed. I did one Chrome Black break not realizing it was 4 cards per box but ended up hitting Bobby Dalbec encased auto on last card of the break. Not my top choice of players but I was super excited to get it. That was only like $40 spot. But I try to stick to cheaper hobby products where I'll at least get a few cards. I've done a bunch of Heritage, Stadium Club, Chrome, Chrome Cosmic and some Panini stuff.

Right now I've bought into a player break (Pujols) for 2 cases of NT for $10 and the Cardinals in a 3 box break of Capstone for $10 for tomorrow. Sure it's a gamble but there are worse things you can waste your money on. No worse than opening a $20 pack and getting absolutely nothing, and we've all been there.

P.S. That Gaylord Perry patch is really nice.

I like Capstone. It's not too expensive. 12 packs of 8 cards per box and lots of hits. The base card design has grown on me and they are thick cards and feel premium. I did a Red Sox team break and got a Matt Barnes non auto jersey card.

Haven't seen in person yet but they remind me of the Pinnacle Zenith cards from the 90s. Looking forward to seeing what I get in both of my breaks.

I've got to admit, team breaks do make sense, in a somewhat narrow sense.

If you're someone who is a collector of a team, but who is intent on getting a dopamine hit breaking product, team breaking does satisfy that desire.

I bought a Wander base and red, and they are very nice in hand. I liked it!

Breaks got me into the hobby. Frankly I was a degenerate "gambler" in breaks the past year, and I couldn't quit it. The problem is it's a losing proposition on just about all time horizons. Sure, it's great here and there, but if you dump tens of thousands into breaks, you will not come out ahead. On any given 30 team break, 1-3 teams make money back.

I think the key is moderation. Hop in a break here or there for the fun of it, but keep low expectations. It's not an investment, it's purely entertainment.

Bring back the random player or player draft breaks!

I'm all about Team breaks. Let's me focus on obtaining only PC cards and not always having to pay the wax markup for the chance of hitting whatever overhyped rookie of the month. Let the people who want to pay to chase rookies do their thing and I can buy my team at a lower buy-in. Wins for all.

It’s probably good that you like breaks because Topps and Panini personally hand deliver their best hits to the breakers

Layton sports cards and backyard breaks always pull the 1/1 of the best hits

Find it pretty interesting though they pulled top 1/1 of every product and now Layton pulled all 3 1/1 wander Franco’s out of national treasures ….. like really all 3 ….

Please prove that they "pulled the top 1/1 of every product" as I have seen tons of great cards NOT pulled there.

It's simple math, you rip a ton of cases, you are bound to hit some big cards.

I was definitely a degenerate daily fantasy sports player for years so breaks have kind of taken that portion of my disposable income. The difference is that with most breaks I at least walk away with some cards even if they aren't worth as much as I paid. Playing DFS I usually walked away with nothing for my money. I had two weeks off over the holidays and it seems like there was tons of breaks happening then so I was going hard those two weeks but now that I'm back to work with less free time I've calmed down a bit

I know breaks are very popular, but I will never understand them. Where I come from, paying another man to handle your goods for you is called a cuck...:D
