Just started getting into cards for the first time in awhile, I've done a bunch of looking around and "research" for months now prior to making an account here, so I'm not clueless. But I am a little confused on how Contenders basketball cards go for so little? Maybe it's the same for football and I just haven't looked as much over there, maybe it's kind of a trash set? And trust me I'm not "pumping" anything here considering I just missed a 1/1 2021 Tatum card last night that ended at 271 dollars by a 5 dollar margin last second, and I was eyeing a /25 lottery cracked ice Mitchell 2017 rookie that was 100% being shill bidded by a known scammer (This site has threads on him) that went for well over 300 somehow.
Anyway, just for my PC I think some of the cards are cool. But they are very low print and pop. Maybe a function of no one grading them sure, but I think they are just low pop in general honestly. Which doesn't make sense. I realize card collector's aren't the brightest bunch lmao, but when there's 25,000+ base prizm Tatum 2017 rookies graded by PSA alone and 2,500 silvers by PSA on top of anyting raw, BGS, etc.
- It just doesn't make sense from a supply and demand perspective. It ain't leaf. As a side note, Prizm seems rather common honestly...cool cards but eh, I'm more into serial numbers and rarity and there are better looks on cards too. Again, I am not shilling the set, I want to buy a single card for my PC at this point and I missed on any "flips" I thought I could have had already, I'm just wondering / TLDR: Is Contenders Low-end? Mid? Worthless?
Oh and since this isn't just a boring thread, I'll include the two cards I was bidding on/watching last night and for a week straight, by the way the seller was "Sportsonfire61" aka "Kiss my Raz" aka Razman2008 obviously, who has a thread or two...or three dedicated to him scamming here. I don't think he scams for sales though but I did research the seller too and this forum basically said he was a scammer, he 100% shill bidded that Donovan Mitchell to 200+ with 1 day to 10 hours left but that seems like it always happens huh? LMAO mid-thread breaking news update --- it's already for sale again, so confirmed he bidded against him self up to 350 last night then just cancelled the auction. Yikes.

That is the Mitchell I was looking at, I guess at this point what would you guys appraise that at? I was hoping to get it for maybe 100-120 as a snipe, 150 ish was my limit but obviously with shill bidding that's psychologically going to influence people, and I was ready to bid a bit over 200. Hard to value it, but obviously it's not selling. This guy just did a fake sale to himself to artificially create a market/interest, scumbags seem pretty common. There is also magically a BGS Mitchell up by "jazzman" which hasn't been up for the past two weeks, obviously the same guy. He also lies about the pop of the card saying it's "1" when it's 2.

This was the 1/1 2021 Tatum I was bidding on last night. 271 final price, seems pretty good to me. I'd imagine it could go for more, but believe me I lost that bid and I am pumping jack s-. This thread went on a huge tangent but I guess this dynamically explains the problem with some more obscure sets without defined price points. 2017 Contenders is something I am looking at for PC, and thought it would be good investment wise sort of, but it's hard to even put a price on anything / there's no demand.
