Nice bump in pay and doesn't have to deal with the players anymore.

he's the most liked commish in sports - and he is pretty damn good at his job. (aside from the fact that the regular season is unwatchable drudge atm.)

Would be terrible for Disney, and would show they learned nothing from Chapek’s woke crusade.

Awful for Disney but good for the NBA. The league needs someone to come in and take back control.

Yeah but do we know if Mark Tatum (or whoever is next in line) leans more towards Stern instead of Silver?

Im not sure. Owners need to take a good hard look in the mirror. They've lost control of their league. They need to take it back or its going to get worse.

I agree the owners should try to gain more control but what I've observed from owners in pro sports is as long as the money keeps flowing, they prefer not to make any changes.
Some ppl were predicting/calling for Goodell to lose his job over his handling of various issues a few years ago but then owners actually voted to give him an extension and a raise because he was making them money.
They'd rather not rock the boat if their pockets are keep getting filled.
If the money is stopped or is threatened, then we'll see more drastic changes from the owners.

I never really understand posts like this Silver is a hire of the owners. The owners have seen their properties continue to grow under Silver. Silver pushes the agenda of the owners. What or who do they need to take it back from?

Agree on the money side of things. Difference between the NFL and the NBA is...the NFL isn't run by its players. The NFL owners & Roger still hold the power. The NBA has allowed their players to take control. The owners are just pawns in the game, right now.

The third partner is the one currently walking the dog. These players tell owners when they're going to play. They demand trades when things aren't going their way. The players control 100% of the narrative right now. They control the league. Sure the owners are making a killing but you can't continue to put your head in the sand and let the inmates run the joint.

Yeah but I think most ppl buy sports teams to:
1 - stroke their egos/be known to the public
2 - make money
Maybe they don't realize they're pawns, but as long as the those two things are happening for them, they probably don't care.

Which is a problem for the sport long term. But hey, everyone's making a killing...so who cares, right?

Commissioners like to say they are "caretakers of the game" but in reality yeah...they just work for and represent the owners' best interests.

He's making them money which is job number 1. I wonder if some of the owners are unhappy with the way players have taken over the league though. The Nets owner sure isn't pleased.

We'll see what the owners care about soon since they're negotiating the CBA soon.
More often than not, the owners win these negotiations since it's shrewd billionaires vs. millionaires, some of whom aren't good at saving money.

The Nets situation isn't on the players alone. It was poor management as well.
I'm sure there are various opinions from ownership group to ownership group. But as a whole they're happy with the direction of the league.
The NBA set revenue record of $10 billion last year. That means NBA annual revenue has nearly tripled over the last decade—going from $3.7 billion in 2012 to $10 billion in 2022. The majority of that was with Silver at the helm. Owners are happy.

This is where you'll see the negotiations really matter. Do the owners simply roll over or do they defend their money and flex the ownership card?

And I'm sure that's a huge part of the reason Disney wants him. These big public companies aren't driven by the right or the left. They're driven by the almighty dollar.

I'm not sure the owners feel their money is in any danger. If they did, then yeah for sure they're going to do something about it.
But as smalltown has said, revenues have tripled in 10 years.
Majority of owners are probably be happy with the way things are. Sure, some of these issues (player movement, load management, etc...) are a bad look for the league. So maybe the owners kick up some fuss and make a good show for the public during negotiations, but deep down, they don't really care.
Load management is a great example. The supposed best solution is to reduce the number of games in the regular season. Owners will never go for that because that's taking money out of their pockets. Players will never go for that because it's also taking money out of their pockets.
Look at the NFL. CTE/concussions are a big deal, right? Player safety is important, right? Okay...let's address that by ADDING a 17th game. That's the completely opposite of what the science says and it makes things weird by having an odd number of games. But hey...it makes everyone associated with the NFL more money so of course they did it.

Which is why a new commish would probably be inferior to adam silver. The one thing silver has is stability. He pretty much has the owners respect and the players like him. A rare combo...look at goodell and manfred.
The obvious thing the league needs to do is cut the regular season and start penalizing teams for resting stars. OR incentivizing teams who don't do it.

Those properties would have grown if you were the commissioner.
