I ran across a seller with 9 out of 13 Barry Sanders 2001 Playoff Honors Buyback autos all ending within minutes of each other on Sunday and won two. Does anyone have any provenance on this set or this particular card? Thanks in advance.

I have the original one autographed. I didn’t know they had a buy back version. However mine do not have the numbers in blue like the one you provided, I would be a little Leary

It should be fine. Not aware of any fake Honor Roll stamps out there.

Numbering matches other Honor Roll numbering. I think it looks good.
Would be a hard stamp to fake. Probably someone was colleting as many as they could over 20 years hoping theyd take off or bc they liked it.

That Barry collector has a whole bunch of awesome and rare cards if he's the same one selling off all those pretty Finest cards. Knowing the collection it came from it was well curated and your purchase is likely fine imo.

The seller has been mentioned before, having similar quantities of old DLP releases. The note about missing serials, could suggest the seller acquired a collection of unreleased copies from Donruss.
Taking a quick look at some of the posted buyback checklists, I don't see this version listed. Any Barry collectors recall seeing these previously?

To slightly hijack, you all should look up ebay seller bscardsllc, tons of old DLP autos that should be numbered that aren’t, and multiple waves of auctions of them

Help me out on the card you have pictured. So Donruss foil overlayed the card with 1999 Autograph" on the front, embossed the front with their standard "Buyback" log and then attached a new back over the old one?

No, I don't think they changed the backs. Based upon the TCDB page the card is the same as the 99 Playoff Absolute SSD Autographs #BH10, but it looks like they hand numbered 13 of them, crimped them with the logo on the lower right and added the sticker.

for reference: https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/35301/cid/3654112/1999-Playoff-Absolute-SSD---Boss-Hogs-Autographs-BH10-Barry-Sanders

I'll still scan the fronts and backs and share tonight.

For the new guys in this thread, that were not around 20+ years ago when these cards came out.

Playoff released a set called Honors back in 2001 (as well as in subsequent years). It was a stand alone set, that had "hits" just like any other. But it also included "Honor Roll" cards.

Those Honor Roll cards, while touted as "Buy Backs" were just left over cards from previous years releases. Mostly unnumbered hits, held back for use as replacements for factory damaged packed out versions.

Those cards were then crimped with the Honor Roll logo and re-released in packs. Some were just inserts cards while others were memorabilia or signed cards.

For those cards that were not serial numbered, like the true release versions were. Playoff would hand write how many were used in that years honors on the cards themselves. Just like this Barry Sanders example.

Thank you, that's super helpful.

Definitely legit. They "Playoff" also had other "Buy Backs" with the gold label on the back instead of the silver that weren't autographed. Never found a checklist for those.

I have sent a few similar cards to COMC and they refuse to list them without being previously "authenticated" by a 3rd party. I agree the stamps would be tough to fake, makes me wonder what exactly COMC is able to authenticate IF NOT authenticated items...
