View Full Version : Best Thermal Label Printer for eBay

I've probably printed well over 10,000 labels with my inkjet printer over the last 10 years, so I probably should have bought a thermal printer awhile ago.

What do you guys use? I was looking at a Dymo 5XL but you can't use anything other than Dymo labels so I am passing on that. I am leaning towards a Brother QL-110NWBc but can't find any information on if it can use third party labels. Does anyone know the answer to this?

Do you use a different label printer? If so, which?

Rollo all day long. Nothing can beat it IMO. I’ve printed tens of thousands of labels with it.

Has anyone worked out the price difference between using a thermal printer vs. printing directly onto the envelop?

You can buy thermal labels in bulk for under a penny each. No way buying ink over and over can beat that.

I have the Rollo Wireless Printer (X1040). I used to just use my brother printer, but the labels are so much faster/easier. I didn't buy a thermal printer for awhile because I wanted a wireless one and there wasn't any good ones. Plus it prints the eBay standard envelope labels as well. No more scissors and tape or buying avery labels.

I've been using the Brother QL 1100 for a couple years and love it. No issues. In my opinion, you can't go wrong with Brother, Dymo, Rollo. All are excellent. Don't see how any one of them is better than the other.

Just be sure whether you want to print 4x6 or 2x7. Somehow I thought the Dymo Twin Turbo printed both, but it's two 2x7s side by side.

The eBay standard envelope formatting is poor on 2x7 but works.

EDIT: I should have said that 2" wide is the max... I know there are smaller sizes that may be useful to people printing "regular" first class postage. The idea is you have two different label sizes on the two rolls.

Mine is a Munbyn brand - had it for almost three years and have run 30,000 labels through it with zero issues. It accepts pretty much any thermal labels, so I have been able to get my cost way down in that department.

Laser printer I use for ESE is as cheap or cheaper to use than a thermal, but there is a big cavaet here. Friend of mine owns a bin store for overstocks and returns. He sells me the envelopes for 2.00 or 3.00 a package of 500 and he gets the toner a few times a year I pay 9.00 for them Each one prints about 2500 pages comes out to way less than a penny each.

Generally I agree its Thermal>Laser>inkjet. Inkjets are a waste of money.

They only have two printers according to their website, the wireless and wired. Wired is $179.99 and Wireless is $279.99. I would likely rarely use wireless so at that price difference I am buying the wired.

I’m a little late to the party, but I also switched to Rollo a few years ago. I grabbed a slightly used one for a nice discount. I really like the fact that you can adjust print speed and darkness to find the best mix to print clear labels. These settings adjustments can help whenever changing label brands or types to keep the labels printing clearly. I use folded labels vs rolled to avoid curling. It doesn’t look as ‘clean’ on my desk but works well.

I'm sure there are others that work as good, but I have never heard of anyone owning a Rollo and then switching to anything else. I've heard of people switching off of other brands though, which led me to my conclusion when I bought the Rollo. Best decision ever. I remember years ago printing and taping labels on. Oh the horror. I wasn't anywhere near the same scale I am now, but I can't imagine doing that for even 5 packages a day. I cringe thinking about it.

Just in case anyone else runs into this problem on their inkjet...

I had blurry barcodes and re-aligning the print heads solved the problem for me.

Appreciate those in here who have posted their label costs - I didn't know generic labels could be had so cheap. I thought my generic ink was almost as cheap as thermal labels, but I see now I'm still at least 2-3x more than the cheapest labels. Good to know going forward!

Dymo 450 Turbo and print 2x7inch USPS labels on Houselabels brand labels without issue. I never used Dymo branded ones.

Another quick piece of info in case someone searches this up... I added a different size to the other roll on the Twin Turbo... it is a little annoying to use because you have to be sure which side you're printing out of and what size. The settings in the dialog boxes on Chrome/Acrobat can mislead you. I've wasted some labels accidentally printing 2x7 on address labels...

Ok noob question(s) here. I have only done bubble mail shipping through ebay but recently bought a large amount of cheaper cards and need to start doing standard envelope. I have a Dymo printer that does 4x6 labels and has worked great for my regular shipping. Does this work for standard envelope shipping as well? And does anyone have certain types of envelopes that they recommend? Do the cardboard ones really ship for the price of a stamp? Any advice/info is appreciated. Thank you. Just want to make sure I have my ducks in a row before I buy a bunch of envelopes and want to make sure my label printer works with it.

I could print the label with a normal printer as well and tape it to the envelope, a little annoying, but can go that route as well.

I print on 4 X 6 labels....the labels print horizontally.

You can either cut the bottom off or fold it up the back side of the envelope.

Make sure you have your settings correct. I have had blanks in the past when I have it set to 4x6. When its on 100mm x 150mm it fixes that. At least for me. Although they are close, it makes a difference.

I don’t mean blank as not printing, I mean blank as there is no paper on the label and it is empty. It will run until the next sheet has a label.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves for the years and years of saying how bad thermal printers are. How dare you all give such bad advice. Every single one of you were against them and you couldn't be more wrong. I think I will start a new thread telling everyone how much easier life is with a thermal printer. I'm very disappointed in each and every one of you.

I just purchased a LabelRange thermal printer. Prints a nice label but i can’t figure out how to print a horizontal label. Will the ESE labels still read if they are 90 degrees different from how my current print & tape labels are oriented on an envelope?

Ink tank printers that can ADF #10 envelopes are faster and cheaper for shipping with ESE. Peeling and sticking labels on to envelopes is such a waste when you can just print the labels directly on the envelopes for a fraction of a penny’s worth of ink.

I've posted about this before but just to freshen it up... I am satisfied with my thermal label printer purchase but two woulda-coulda's:

* Bought the Dymo Twin Turbo thinking it printed 4x6s. Nope. Max 2" wide. I don't want to mess with buying a 2nd size of labels for addresses or other random uses so sometimes I print on 2x7 and cut them up. Maybe I'll change my mind and buy smaller ones someday.

* Have a USB version and kinda wish I had a wireless one. This is mostly a function of my old crappy computer still running Windows Vista. Would be nice to print from my phone or my "other (laptop) computer" that may or may not technically belong to a "corporation". Though doing bulk labels on the phone sucks.

Couple other random thoughts/questions as I am typing...
* What should I watch for as far as failures? Printing not as sharp, incomplete printing?
* eBay 2x7 formatting for ESEs still sucks. It works, but it's super small and comes out looking crappy/blurry IMO. Surely print quality doesn't affect tracking capability, right?
* Houselabels stuff has seemed to work fine.

My printer is not doing well with the barcodes on ESE. Some of it is faded. Is it a cleaning issue, a lousy label issue, or do I need a new printer? Had to go this route yesterday with mine. I had to put a new stack of labels in and I inserted them in wrong. The sticker came off and stuck to the inside of the printer and the thermal printing part. I used the rubbing alcohol and q-tips to get rid of all the sticky residue. Afterward, it prints like a champ. Actually a little darker than before.

Ok I’m probably just missing something…

But I can’t get the labels to print in landscape mode. They are printing in portrait mode, even when I switch to landscape manually.

Google is your friend. You can also try changing your paper size to 100mm*150mm.

Are you using a PC or Mac?

Update: work around discovered! So, instead of going right to printing the label in ebay, I am now downloading the label, then opening up the pdf in Adobe; switching to landscape here worked, whereas printing them straight in ebay kept it in portrait.

Other that so far so good. Typed all of this with the time I saved packaging tonight haha.

Or you can right-click and open in photos, and print from there

Recently switched from a Dymo setup printing 2x7 to some kind of Amazon brand using 4x6 because a friend ended up with an extra one. The 4x6 labels are cheaper so it'll save money in the long run. I still have the smaller printer for custom thank-you labels that I put on the eBay thank-you cards.

I bought this cheap Pedoolo thermal printer off amazon a couple years back. Thing's been working great, but all of the sudden when it's printing it'll pull back the label, like it normally does, but now it'll freeze and then spit out and print the second half of the label. I've tried cleaning it, but I don't know what's wrong with it. Anyone had a similar problem?

Also, went to go pick up some ink at Wal-mart and HOLY HECK! when did ink get so expensive? $150 for XL ink? That's egregious.

Some times my Rollo does this. I shut it down and unplug it. I give it a little time to breath so to speak and plug it all back in and yes I do a quick cleaning as well. Usually it runs good for another 9 to 10 months without issue.

I'll give it a go with the shut down and unplug, but I don't use it very often. I cleaned the roller, but I don't know what else I could clean. It seems more than the roller is locked at the start and then it feeds. Sounds weird.

Is there a recommended printer and/or label size for eBay standard envelope? Those are the vast majority of my sales, so not sure if one printer can do standard 4x6 and those as well

A 6x4 label fits on a #10 PWE.
