View Full Version : Who was the worst player to ever play for your team?

Worst career? This is always tricky because they have to be good enough to stick with the team for at least a few season, but still obviously be terrible. Preseason Mike White was even worse than regular season starter Ben DiNucci, but I think LB Bobby Carpenter was a much bigger disappointment and he stuck around for years. The most frustrating player I remember was CB Kevin Smith in the 90s always drawing pass interference calls at the worst time.
Worst single game performance? Either Brett Maher in the playoffs or Chaz Green against the Falcons.
Worst human being? Maybe Greg Hardy.

Worst career - Plenty of draft busts, but I'll go with Todd Blackledge just because of the other QBs in that draft.
Worst single game performance - Lin Elliott
Worst human being - Jovan Belcher

Worst career? Tie between Kentwan Balmer (passed on DeSean Jackson), Jim Druckenmiller (passed on Jake Plummer), Gio Carmazzi (passed on Chad Pennington), and Solomon Thomas (passed on Deshaun Watson and Mahomes). Javon Kinlaw is about to join this list as well, what a bust he's been. i like him, but man, he has just wasted 4-years while we passed on CeeDee Lamb, Tristan Wirfs, and Justin Jefferson.
Worst single game performance? Jimmy Garoppolo in the 4th quarter of the Super Bowl and the NFC Title Game against the Rams. overall, he was an average QB, and at that, he was good enough to win a lot of games. in those two 4th quarters, he was absolute garbage. this 49ers team should be a dynasty right now.

Worst Career: I base it on where they were selected in the draft. In this case, it's how much we gave up to get the player(A lot). Right now it's Trey Lance though injury is the main reason.
Worst human being: Unless I missed a murderer, Dana Stubblefield. Currently serving 15 years to life for raping a disabled woman.

Patriots: Jordan Richards, James Ferentz (inexplicably long career), N'keal Harry
Celtics: Marcus Smart - not a terrible player but takes tons of threes/shots and constantly loses games for the team by not knowing his role / is sneaky bad.

He's been bounced between the practice squad and active roster more than anyone I've ever seen. Apparently just a good depth piece, and is on again for '23.
I'd throw Chad Jackson, and even Hart Lee Dykes up there to contend with Harry.

I would agree with these.
Worst single game performance? I’d vote Kyle Williams who fumbled and muffed away that 2011 49ers team’s chance at a Super Bowl appearance. Others had bad games, but not with those stakes.
And while Stubblefield’s crimes are awful let’s not forget Lawrence Phillips who gave up the sack that ended Steve Young’s career before engaging in dv, driving on to a basketball court to run over kids and allegedly murdering a prison cell mate.

I'm not even going to count draft picks... because those get butchered all the time (Justin Gilbert is the worse though if I was choosing)
So it's a tie...
Kenny Britt and Dwayne Bowe. They both get paired together as WR's that didn't care and just wanted a paycheck
They played a combined 16 games for Cleveland - 23 catches for 286 yards - from 2 guys that had decent NFL careers

Worst single game performance? The one that comes to mind is Cade McNown's game against the 49ers (https://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/200012170sfo.htm). Went 9/29 for 73 yards and 1 INT. Runner up would be the guy(s) covering Terrell Owens who put up 20 receptions for 283 yards and a TD.
Worst human being? Sam Hurd

Worst Career: Devin Bush. Traded up to get him, came on in his second year before his injury. Lost it mentally and physically. Made weird social media posts with kittens dying and sucked on the field. Never took accountability for anything. I’m not sure his de-evolution relative to on field production can be topped
Worst Single Game performance: Neil O’Donnell being the only QB in history to throw a SB without being paid by the other team to do so.
Worst Human: Antonio Brown. Not going to overthink this one.

I'm surprised Niner fans haven't considered former 1st rounder and 8-year team player JJ Stokes. That guy had a worst career thanks to the longevity and not being OG Ruben Brown there two picks later. Brown had a fine 13-year career as a perennial Pro Bowler. They clearly had a need there as their next pick was a Guard.

As a Vikings fan I want to say Kirk Cousins.
But in sober reality, it has to be 1st rounder DE Erasmus James. Out of Wisconsin was nicknamed "Eraser" but all he erased was his career as he had difficulty actually tackling anyone.
Close second is WR Troy Williamson (South Carolina) who was drafted 1st round to replace Randy Moss. So yeah who is Troy Williamson? Enough said.

He was all over the field playing chippy/through the whistle...then he was fined 2 games in a row and after that he just held back/was never the same.
Worst single game performance - The entire 1979 team offense with a game where they netted a whopping - 7 yards.
Worst Human - It's the NFL so too many to list. Worst crimes were probably Kellen Winslow the 3rd and Phillip Adams( He played for many teams so he could be used many times in this thread) He shot 6 people who all died.

JJ was not a bust. i think people forget that he started his career hurt in 95', and then in 96', Owens blew up and really took over that #2 spot.

For worst person can't forget - WR Tommy Kane also
also - I still nominate Malik McDowell as worst draft pick.... although I've heard stories that in one of the early drafts, the Seahawks picked the wrong player on a college team, and meant to draft his teamate, so that's bad too.
AAron Curry - Can't really go with him, as he did have a trip and then get up and get a sack against the 49ers in the last game I actually attended in person in 2009. And I still wear his jersey occasionally. I used to alternate with wearing a Rice jersey to work.... So Curry and Rice... I'm not sure anyone actually noticed. ;)

Josh Rosen - ok, I think we all agree on this one. I still remember watching him in an early game against the Seahawks, and he kept throwing the ball and hitting receivers in the chest, and they would drop it. And I was like, he must throw a really uncatchable ball....hopefully he satys on the Cardinals for a really long time. ;)
He was the Volcanic, Gold Team, Rookie player of the day though... So he's got that going for him.

Josh Rosen - ok, I think we all agree on this one. I still remember watching him in an early game against the Seahawks, and he kept throwing the ball and hitting receivers in the chest, and they would drop it.
Obligatory: Rosen just needs a chance.
Non-obligatory: How many games would the 49ers have won last season with Rosen as the starter?
